Not expecting this to be hot, but just been looking over cashback options for different breakdown cover, made a shortlist of what to go for & thought I might as well share it. I've only looked on topcashback, prefer this to quidco because of the option to cash out in clubcard points. Link goes to topcashback for RAC... just search in topcashback for the others.

for anyone that has a Toyota you can get AA cover including cover in Europe for £68 per year. covers the car. I think it's a good deal and tempted as I have just cancelled my first direct monthly fee that includes breakdown. cheaper options if you don't take your car to Europe.

Cover for my wife and I in any car - renewal price with AA - £263. One quick phone call to cancel and the immediately reduced it to £140. Said no and went with RAC £160 with £84 cashback so effectively £76.
It's a pain but I am switching between AA and RAC each year to get the best price.
(I know green flag or others may be cheaper but I wanted to go with AA or RAC)

Thanks for prices, used to negotiate my renewal with AA. They wanted £162.30 on the letter, called them said that's rubbish and the chap came back with £110, I explained AA \ RAC though cash back £53 \ £55... He explained they can't match cashback price for new customers so I said what can I do to cancel.... He then said he would go and have a word. Came back and offer to do it for £80 which I will take them up on because I don't want to have to cancel and sort out cashback.
Thanks dwattsy21

I'm going to look into the Nationwide FlexPlus Account (mentioned above), however, I need to check if I will be charged fees if any DDs are not paid during the transfer process. Is there anybody out there who has a Nationwide FlexAccount, FlexDirect or FlexPlus account already, who would like to earn £100 (if I'm accepted and everything goes through) for referring me? I've asked some friends and can't find anybody who has one of these bank accounts. Thank you.

I recently had a letter to rejoin for the basic Roadside assistance for £39 for a year, but receive a £20 Boots of M&S voucher. If interested, might be worth calling them and asking if they can honour this for you -0800 980 8624.
The usual thing to watch is they'll set a Direct Debit to kick off once you've completed the year. Just set yourself a reminder to contact them before this and cancel. They will send you a reminder too.
Another tip - if their travel insurance, home insurance etc looks good for you, phone them up and say you're thinking about it and ask if they could include a year of free breakdown. I've had this a couple of times before, worked out pretty well overall.

I've had a Fiat Panda 1.3 diesel from new in 2010. Have done 92000 miles in it and other than tires and brake pads etc the only thing i've had to replace is the hand brake cables so your contempt for Fiats is a little off key. The car only cost me £7500 brand new too with a 24% discount online.

I can verify this is a Fiat - a Fiat 126. I own one! Albeit mine is the arguably even more unreliable (if that's even possible) version; the water-cooled BIS. It was my first car...the doors would freeze shut in the winter meaning I'd have to get in by slithering in through the boot. It was so short that in a car park, people would drive into the space only to find there was a car actually parked there! The engine is a pathetic 25hp, 704cc. Someone when taking the details of the car over the phone asked if it was a motorbike because of the pathetic engine size. Eventually a nice hole appeared in the floor providing some air conditioning/wet feet in the rain. The throttle decided to stick which effectively gave the thing cruise control, and the handbrake never really worked in the first place. Yet I felt compelled not to sell the car, but keep it for restoration! Currently sat in storage looking sad :disappointed:

So, do you get £100 if you don't go through a referral? Then, if you go through a referral, you get an additional £100 for yourself, and the other person gets £100? I can't see on their website any mention of you getting £100 for changing over to their bank account - can you do this if you don't have somebody to refer you?
Also, still confused about DDs unpaid when they are sorting out your new account. It says that if your credit rating is affected, they will amend this - once in the process of changing over your bank account. What about any fees for unpaid DDs with your old bank account which go out during the 7 day period? Are you still able to use your old bank account for the first 6 days of the change over - if not, does that mean that any funds in your old bank account can't be touched for 7 working days whilst they are doing the switch? Thank you.

You've never seen a new car on the back of a recovery vehicle then?!? Modern cars are probably more likely to go wrong than older cars as there is simply more to go wrong!!! My old Escort NEVER failed, you turned the key, it worked, there was no computer checking this and that and no sensors checking exhaust and mix etc.
If you honestly think that new cars are fail proof, you're deluded. It's like any insurance, you can say its all a waste.... until you find yourself in need of it!

I'm currently with Start Rescue. The gearbox in my Citroen Xsarra Picasso decided to pack up the day we were driving (89 miles) to Bournemouth Airport (I live in Exeter) to catch our flight to Spain. It started playing up about 10 miles from the airport and I struggled big time to get the car to the airpark. Due to our flight soon taking off, I didn't have time to pull over and call the breakdown company, so aimed to get the car to the airport, to park up, and deal with the car later!
I called Start Rescue once we were in Spain and explained the situation. They notified Bournemouth Airport about the problem and that there was a possibility that I might not be able to get the car out of the car park by the scheduled departure time that I had booked. I was able to pre-book a recovery whilst in Spain. Because our flight was not due in until after 5 pm, I was told that there was no possibility of my car being taken to a local garage in Bournemouth to see if they could remedy the problem, and because of that it would be a straightforward recovery back to my local garage in Exeter. I am looking at the Nationwide Flex Account option at the moment, to see if it will be cheaper paying out £10 a month to get breakdown, mobile phone insurance and travel insurance, rather than paying out separately. However, if I wasn't looking at this, I would definitely recommend Start Rescue (if I renew with them in February they will give me a 10% discount) - everything was straight forward, and the driver who picked us up was extremely friendly, polite and funny (particularly when telling us about his family and his life) - same character as Karl Pilkington!

The £75 from Quidco expires in 7 days - it says that you must have opened an account and used the transfer process to get the cashback. I was not planning on doing the transfer until around the 17 Feb, due to the dates of my current DDs. Would this mean that I would not be eligible for the cashback if I don't complete a transfer within the next 7 days (surely that won't be possible now)? Would the referral, change over in 7 days and Quidco all need to be done at the same time (and before the next 7 days when the Quidco offer expires)?

Crap prices quoted AA - £28 - 2 calls outs to car only, no recovery, no nothing - You get what you pay for.The first recovery price is £128 which you will need as an essential if you break down - unless you have your own tow truck. Been checking these prices all week and what is covered all the big names are not covering the essential unless you pay for it.

I'm going to look at this and see if it would be cheaper to have than my Santander 1,2,3 account - since the monthly fee has gone up to £5, I'm only making 13p a month on it. I usually do my family travel insurance just for one holiday a year to Europe. I cancelled the phone insurance as it was costing me too much (4 phones - 1 for me, the others for my children) - between £6.99 and £7.99 for each phone a month). I currently have full break-down cover with Start Rescue but that is due for renewal on 3 February.
If I change to this account, what happens about the mobile phone insurance when the contracts were all taken out in my name, but 3 of the phones are looked after/used by my 3 teenage children (all under 18 - reason the contracts were taken out in my name). Would the insurance company still pay out if say, my oldest son lost his phone away from home and I wasn't with him - seeing the phone contract is in my name?
As regards changing over, I have a lot of direct debits for monthly bills going out of my account. How long does it take for everything to be changed over? I have direct debits going out each week in the month, so surely for some of them, they wouldn't be paid if the bank hadn't set up the new account in time - would I be charged a fee (for an unpaid DD) by the company that the monthly payment was due to go to? Thank you.

Thank you.
