As a relative newbie to Google Play store, I find it very odd that one cannot buy the cards direct from the Google Play store, or even buy a redeemable code online like you can with the iTunes store.
Also, am I being a dunce, or can you not gift apps either?

Tried instore and it came up as full price - customer services didn't want to know. Full price according to them and 'no knowledge' of any discounts.

Not sure what happened but that's incorrect information. Definitely in-store as saw lots of point of sale information advertising the promo in my local instore. Whenever these gift card promos are run is online and in-store.
