You trick the rapper ice cube in to eating all the fatty bits by telling him that's where all the flavour comes from

Wait till you guys find out he is using a ouija board to contact his grandad, also the fat adds a lot of flavor to the meat.

First of all I am a she not a he and secondly ouija boards should never be played with and lastly my grandad is very much alive and it's in very bad taste to imply anyone's family member is no longer among us.

Eh ice cube to get the fat out? Just start cooking it & pour the fat our takes 2 seconds
20% is ridiculous though

ribeye steak has more fat than that

So: 1kg of this stuff, remove fat, bingo: 800gm of low grade mince for £3.50 = £4.37/kg. Not great is it!

21 Jan 16#48
yeah same thing - its just something cold needed
like the spoon idea actually as could just pull it out by the handle in one go
might not work as well due to low density though, maybe one stuck inside an icecube would be best

Oh, I will give it a go. My mum always used a wooden spoon out of the freezer, maybe same chemistry.

£2.58 for the equivilent at lidl this week.. how is this a good deal
brilly
21 Jan 161#45
well yeah but it lowers the temperature enough locally that the fat solidifies

Doesn't the ice cube melt in the heat then ?

The picture has 0% fat, 20% is high. By the time you cooked the mince and drained the fat you only have about 80% left.

hmm lidl sells 800g packs of mince all the time
for the equivalent weight per kilo its 2.80 ... i think its less but not sure?

As all ready said higher fat content is best burgers or just drain the fat off with any method you prefer for any other meal.

20% fat mmmmmmmm tasty

21 Jan 161#33
The easiest way to get rid of the fat if you really want to. Fry the mince till brown. Empty into a colander over a sink with the hot tap running, then rinse the mince. Keep hot tap running for a while so as not to block the drain.
welshlass1 to kel64
21 Jan 161#34
I do the same with the cooking, but then strain the mince in a colander into a food recycling bag- it goes out will food waste then and avoids clogging the pipes

Sorry am I missing something re 20% fat; You fry the mince, the fat turns to liquid, you pour the fat away? Either into bin or like others have said make a fat ball for the birds?
edinburgher
21 Jan 16#30
Yuck...........20% fat is a HUGE amount of fat.............5% is way better for both health and taste....dry fry, no need to scoop fat away
w_orbit to edinburgher
21 Jan 16#37
Surely frying 20% fat mince and scooping the fat away would have the same effect, but better because without the fat frying isn't frying at all - it's burning....

20% fat mince is great for burgers. Any chef worth their salt (see what I did there) will advise a higher fat mince for burgers.

I'm no food guru, but mince with 20% fat must be very fatty meat before its minced. I'm sure better quality meat minced is something like <5% fat, but as I say I'm no expert.

The ice cube thing is too messy and time consuming. I turn off the mince once it's cooked then go back about 20 mins later when the fat has risen to the top. Then I lie a slice of bread on top and it absorbs all the oil/fat. I lift the bread back out and bin it.

The ice cube gets put in the bin or the fat jar that when full gets put in the bin.
The only thing that would make my grandad weird is if he was a vegetarian

When you see the fat start to show on the top, You turn the gas off, Drop an ice cube in and the fat gets attracted to the ice cube, You then scoop the gathered fat out and if necessary repeat the process.
