Firejack to GB credit crunch

The NVIDIA GTX970 is a tier above the AMD R9 380X. Its AMD competitor is the R9 390.

Basically the difference between the AMD R9 380X and NVIDIA GTX970 comes down to you paying ~30% more and getting ~30% more performance.

The GTX970 has slightly better power consumption. Plus HDMI 2.0 support, although the R9 380X should be able to do this via an adapter now according the release notes for the most recent driver.

The GTX970 has 3.5GB of fast memory with 0.5GB crippled to the point of being almost useless. The other controversy surrounding the NVIDIA card is early indications show it doesn't have full DirectX12 support. Neither of these issues will cause problems in todays games unless you are running at 4K. Worth knowing for the future.

Dropping down a tier to the R9 380X, it is sold as the best sub £200 card for 1080p gaming. All the reviews I read supported this.

Some stats:

Shading units 380x 2048 > 380 1792
Texture mapping units 380x 128 > 380 112
Render output processors 380x 32 = 380 32
Compute units 380x 32 > 380 28

R9 380X 4GB VS GTX 960 FTW 4GB - GTA V / Fallout 4 / The Witcher 3 / AC: Syndicate Benchmarks...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ2qkBjjils

Doesn't look like much difference between the 380x and 960 (4GB) but is the 960 not £30 cheaper?

I need a gfx card today, been waiting for 2 months for a deal and nothing really appeared...guessing since a Titan didnt appear for less than £200 lol

I'd rather not spend £179, anyone recommend anything comparable for about the £130 mark?

P.S What time do Scan update they're "today only" deals?

9 Dec 15 #29
He doesnt need >500W for a GTX970 at all. Modular is not a must.

See above

He did not say he wanted to sli 2x 970.
krisward7955
8 Dec 15 #18
You'll have to make sure all you components don't run over the 500 watts. You should be fine with the 960 as it's quite low power. But not 100 % sure with the 970
krisward7955
8 Dec 15 #19
GTX 970 needs a minimum of 500 watts, so you should be good to go with what you have. BUT m if you plan on getting another card for SLI, you will need a new PSU
Nate1492 to krisward7955
8 Dec 15 2 #21
This isn't accurate information.

The 970 doesn't need a 500w PSU, the recommended PSU is 500, but you can absolutely get away with much less.

The system described won't top 350w. You'd be fine (Just fine) with SLI at 500+ as well. Comfortable with 550 though.

http://powersupplycalculator.net/

As you can see, the min recommended PSU is 350W with the standard fixings.
alifff
8 Dec 15 #20
I see. I have that in mind tbh but PSU, i don't mind upgrading but will 960 be ok for the next 2/3 yrs?
krisward7955
8 Dec 15 1 #22
So you think his system with 2 x 970 and an i7 will work on a 500 watt PSU ?

Are you gonna pay for it when it fries ?

There is a recommended wattage for a reason. and SLI 970 is 700 watts.. SO NO 500watts WILL NOT BE JUST FINE..

I wouldn't try arguing with an nvidia fanboy.
Having said that the tdp on the 380x series is fantastic and gives gimped nvidia GPUs a run for there money and they come with full fat DX12 hardware (something if nvidia bothered implementing in their GPUs would up the tdp considerably).
I feel sorry for nvidia owners when dx12 games arrive next year.
rev6 to Ferrari100
8 Dec 15 #28
Full fat DX12? None are.
rev6
8 Dec 15 #26
Just abouts, depending on the rest. I wouldn't run 500w.

I'd avoid XFX GPUs if I were you, had two fall on me in a row. Cheap for a reason. Spend more and get an Asus, Gigabyte, Sapphire etc.

9 Dec 15 #30
Should I buy this or a cheaper R9 280x from Ebay used for around £100? Which card draws more power from the PSU?
blaser to f2k8
9 Dec 15 #32
I'd go with this, you have no idea how the ebay card has been treated by the previous owner. Plus this card uses the newer GCN1.2 architecture so should have more features.
Nate1492
9 Dec 15 #31
I wouldn't personally run 970 SLI, full stop, but the numbers are about spot on.

1 HD, 1 4790k, 2 970s, mobo, keyboard, mouse is 499W max load.

But there's no need for a modular power supply nor a 700W.

I'd be comfortable with a 550w.
BigYoSpeck
9 Dec 15 #33
500W is the recommendation because nvidia don't want to baffle your average person with talk of 12v rail amperage so they just say 500W to be safe. If you're running a decent brand of PSU as long as your 12v rail (or rails) are going to be able to provide 350W or more then it will happily run an i7 and the single 970 that is being considered (no mention of SLI) so that means anything over 30a to be safe would be fine which could be provided by many reputable 400W power supplies.

Worth it from a 280x besides updated DX support?
ck12111
9 Dec 15 #35
How much better compared to R9 285?
rev6 to ck12111
9 Dec 15 #36
Not that much.

I wouldn't upgrade, no, unless you need FreeSync or 4K VSR.

It depends how many connections your PSU has. The lower the wattage, usually, the less connections. Some 800/1000w power supplies have many, so not having modular would be quite untidy unless you have a very large case.

9 Dec 15 #37
The 380x is about 10% faster than a 380, while being quite a bit costlier. There have been 380s for £120-130 recently, so I'd say thats the better option.
eiamhere69 to Zooms
9 Dec 15 #39
Only the 2gb versions mind.

I saw a 4gb version for £140 (just over, can't remember exact price)

I was looking at a 280x for £132 (market place) so couldn't decide with it not being new.

Saw a GTX 960 for about £120, the 4gb Pny was £140 (not much difference as narrow bus).

All this after missing a 290x at £176 (market place).

I hesitate due to the power draw of and cards and Nvidia cards are ALL over priced and almost all of them are gimped one way or another.

At this rate I'll still be waiting come pascal, etc.

Fury X 2 was due about now, could be any day. This should be awesome, but costly (not compared to Nvidia) and will affect prices fir the better.

I have been wondering if the Cooler Master lawsuit has caused AMD to stall, but not likely

So no 4k at over 30fps.

I'd say ATI have massively dropped the ball when not a single card in their range makes use of new TVs.

I think that's a pretty big jump.

You can have an untidy inside of a PC case. No case is just straight up ugly to everyone.

Unless you think the cables wouldn't physically go inside the case or would greatly restrict airflow, there is little reason to recommend a modular power supply to the average user.
