2 year old console so any microsoft warranty would be expired already as it goes from manufacturing date so maybe not the bargain it seems

What a load of rubbish. If it's new, the warranty starts when you register the product. Almost every electrical item on the planet would arrive at a consumer with a null warranty using that logic. The manufacturing date of most things is long before they reach the seller, never mind the consumer.

Clearly never owned an xbox then, it has a manufacturing date for a reason, the date of registering is entirely irrelevant. I am speaking from experience owning and having Microsoft products repaired.
So you're saying if you bought a previously unregistered xbox 360 Microsoft would repair rrod as "I only just registered it so I must have only just bought it" even if it was made it 2007? Good to know

That's a disingenuous response as my comment regarded registering a new product.
For the record, an Xbox 360 from 2007 wouldn't be covered by the EU Sale of Goods act which covers defective goods bought within the past 6 years, but the RROD issue would come under the umbrella of 'manufacturer defect' and any Xbox produced since 2009 that developed it would be covered and you can return the 360 to the point of sale (assuming it's still in existence) for a full or at very least partial refund. It's a powerful and far-reaching ruling which is sadly underused by consumers.
(And all the more reason to buy anything new and expensive from a reputable retailer)

Maybe I'll peruse on the lav later. In my very recent experience I bought an xbox one this September, registered it to my account for the purpose of a repair and saw the warranty was covered until this December.
I had no difficulties adding this console to my user so wasn't previously registered to the previous owner so where are the other 9 months of my warranty? Whether MS add 3 months grace to a year warranty to cover shop time I can't say but a warranty doesn't start from registration.
You are right in that it is always better to buy from a shop that you could easily return it to but you'd pay a fair bit more for a similar bundle (albeit with a better game than fifa 14).
