sent the missus to get one with the linked picture on her phone, assistant gave her an IDE device, same price, similar looking, but different, pretty shabby bit of kit but ok for a fiver i guess

This looks like it has a non standard usb connector - ok as it comes with the cable,
but much better to have a standard usb-micro or mini in case you ever lose the lead.

pointless purchase to be honest if your machine has usb3. the speed is so slow in current standards
I picked up one of these last week.
A word of warning the sata connector is pretty flimsy.

I've had several of the sub £3 ones from eBay and they've been fine but are far from top quality. They are also limited to 500Gb maximum capacity drives IIRC.

How has this got heat? Over 100% Mark up from eBay prices for the same item.
China price is probably about a quid.

Very cheap plastic with very easy to break clips at the end of the case inside.
I had one of these and dumped it soon after I bought it. Not even worth a quid, never mind almost 5!
Original q was related exclusively to 3.5" drives so HK-sourced USB3 2.5" enclosure of same item in post #3 is reasonably irrelevant. Description of dual USB SATA cable suggests it will power 3.5" drive. Both 3.5" options above are provided with separate power supplies which I suspect would be more reliable than client-based dual USB power.

For any kind of video or moving a largish folder of photos the speed advantage of usb 3 will be noticeable over USB2.
I am right in thinking that USB 3.0 wouldn't provide sufficient power to get a 3.5inch drive moving?
