yeah I had a cheap telescope from jessops the other year, very painful to use - literally, and metaphorically lol. Couldn't see a thing in it, couldn't even get it to focus on the moon properly. I think you'd be able to make a better one yourself with a pair of broken spectacles and a pringes can. Hey that's not a bad idea!

I had something like this when I was a kid. Bought by my parents. Can't say it really made anything look much better although you could see a vast amount of stars & hazy comets not quite bright enough for the human eye if you were patient enough to move the scope around the sky. Good for the moon but then being the nearest object (240k miles) you'd expect to see what you already can, just in sharper detail.

Honestly don't bother, got one for my daughter last year as she was doing about space at school, massive disappointment!

I wouldn't take one for free, simply a waster of material to make one.

Agree with other comments, save a fiver. You'll see the moon OK, but if a moth flies within 10 yards of it it'll wobble like crazy. It will be in the bin or you'll be flogging it on a car boot within a couple of months.

if you find one good luck!! one of my children really wants a telescope but want to buy her a good one, so told her if she's really serious about wanting one, then we might next Xmas. (birthday just 3 weeks after Xmas... so not buying her one this time ) It will then give me time to look at prices and seeing what is good for the money

The concern with this is that you can't just consider the magnification. It is going to have a tiny aperture, so it won't let much light in (and hence objects like planets will appear dim) and the design of it will allow for all sorts of optical aberrations. Even my expensive Refractor needs a special filter in order for the moon to stop looking purple! My experience with cheap telescopes like this is that they are toys and do more harm than good for children looking to engage with the night sky.

My advice would be to save your money and arrange to visit your local astronomy club who can let you use their equipment, guided, and you'll learn a lot more and see a lot better - not just the moon and planets but star clusters, nebulae and galaxies too.

Funny, this thing is probably better than what Galileo had. It's difficult, it might be a good toy for a kid to play at being astronomer and foster an interest. On the other hand, it might be so terrible that it'll turn them off forever. Your call.
