By law, if it's more than 20 pence in 1p and 2p pieces then the cashier doesn't have to accept them. No such problem with a self-service till (not that I've ever had anywhere near that amount of change on my person :stuck_out_tongue: ).

You are thinking of the large Coinstar machines which charge. I think the poster meant the normal self serve checkouts to pay for your shopping which are free to use (and handy to offload your spare change!).
