This is my first deal, so hope it is a good one and some people benefit, as I just did :)

I have been looking for a good Black Friday deal on a 2015 43'' Sony Android TV, but it never came!

However, AO.com are now offering a £100 discount on all Android TVs, which brings this down to £359.

Discount Code: ANDROID100

Android OS on TVs got some mixed reviews initially, but it seems that after the latest updates making Youview available (including on-demand access to BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and more), the reviews have been positive.

Same model also available in silver: http://ao.com/product/kdl43w756csu-sony-tv-silver-36236-108.aspx

The discount code also applies to other Sony Android TVs, including w80 (3D) and x83 (4K) series and various sizes.

EDIT: SONY are running a promotion for a 5-year guarantee and I confirmed that this model is included, along with most, if not all, ANDROID TVs. There seems to be no restriction on the retailer and all that is needed to obtain the extended guarantee certificate is sending an email with purchase details, serial number and a photo of the back of the TV.

I found the terms and conditions of the guarantee here: http://www.superfi.co.uk/images/Sony_5YGForm_1stOctober2015.pdf

Updated to latest firmware last night, and it's all good. Defaults to youview at start-up, and to whatever channel you were last watching. So I will have no need for the fancy logitech remote when it turns up.

YouTube cast onto the telly from my iphone works flawlessly too.

Lovely, lovely, lovely.

It's an app available for free in Play store. Then you can find a lot of tutorials online on how to set-up add-ons for movies, music etc.

After 6 days of use, I can say that I am really happy with the TV and OS so far. Android may not be perfect but it is quite stable - had just one freeze today where I had to power-cycle the TV. All the functions that I tried are fine and navigation is easier and more pleasant compared to the Samsung 5 series 2015 Smart TV that I have been using. Love the look and the quality of the set.

Now I am waiting for the extended guarantee to be confirmed by Sony

Mine turned up today. Very impressed.

I haven't tried all of the smart stuff, but what I have used is very good, with no lag. I bought the Sony ht-xt3 soundbase as well. Beautiful sound.

Just waiting on an hdmi 1.4 cable to turn up on Monday so that I can use ARC, and then will just have 1 hdmi going up into the TV and the power cable. Everything else will plug into the soundbase.

I was really worried about this given some of the negative comments and forum posts elsewhere. Have to say for £370 it's a cracking TV. The android OS has been fine and not caused any aggro (at least so far). The remote is responsive and netflix is a better experience than on any other device I have used.
Time will tell for sure but no complaints from any of the household ranging from 4-40!

Mine just arrived today... looks amazing. One thing though. Is this supposed to come with a second remote? As in some reviews it does.. has a touch sensitive pad on the front.

Normal remote only I'm afraid. I'm not even sure if the swipe remote even comes with the expensive sets.

Can't wait for mine to turn up now. My 7 year old plasma will be going to a good home.

Great news spirtos13. Silly question, but is it possible to have the TV start up on a certain channel when you turn it on, or are you always met with the menu system?

Just a quick update to whoever bought the TV and is still following this thread: I have installed it and been testing it all week. There were two Sony/Android updates, the last of which was made available today. From a hardware point of view the TV seems fantastic - by far, the best looking TV I have used and the image and sound are of unbelievable quality for the price. As for the Android OS, I have not encountered any major issues yet, although it is a bit early to say much more. To be honest, I am not an advanced user and my experience with smart TVs has been quite limited. In any case, my plan is to keep my set-up quite simple, so I am not going to add a home cinema, sound system or satellite option, which have been associated with many of the reported issues. That said, I am still concerned about the comments on the remote responsiveness and the navigation lags after the TV has remained on standby for some time and will keep an eye on that.

With regard to the extended 5-year guarantee, I supplied to Sony Customer Service team all that they requested and I am waiting for a confirmation from the Warranty dept. by Tuesday.

Good luck to everyone else!

Silver is still in stock.....

On the 5 year warranty, the form linked to doesn't ask you which supplier you got it from, it just asks you to email a few details and they'll send a certificate. I wouldn't bother asking them any more before they change their minds!

ao.com have stated that they're not a "participating retailer" as far as the Sony 5 year warranty goes. Although the customer service guy didn't seem 100% sure. I've also fired off a query to Sony asking if ao.com are a "participating store" as far as Sony are concerned.

Just to say went to costco, just some LGs non-hd and hd, no cheaper than from Richer Sounds, 1 4K 43 inch, again, no cheaper than what you can get elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure now I'll just get this Sony set, I'm probably slightly mad but it's a good price, £100 off what everyone else is selling it at.

4 Dec 15 #40
I'm very interested in the Sony android based TVs, on paper it sounds a great combination. However the execution seems not to match expectations currently. I'm tempted but laying out cash on the basis of "hoping the technical issues will be resolved" is not appealing. Perhaps an LG with WebOS 2.0 is the way to go.

4 Dec 15 #41
I have ordered one of these but going to costco tomorrow to see what they have on offer, pretty concerned that Sony will forget about this batch of TVs when they release new ones with more power. I love the idea of this TV, great screen, good looks but I'm willing to cancel it if something good shows up tomorrow. Just not convinced and don't want to end up having to wrestle with the thing to do basic functions.

I'm with you ezman. I am thinking of pairing this with the Sony soundbase ht-tx3, so would only have one hdmi going into the Bravia TV, which might be helpful given some of the comments about what happens when you try switching hdmi input.
janner43
4 Dec 15 #39
What I would recommend is a trip to Richer Sounds with some standard 1080p footage and test cards on a Flash Drive and play them on the screens in your price range so that you can get the TV that suites your personal preferences. Other than that, if you are going on the smart OS alone, then either LG or Samsung. Look for the highest refresh rate you can get.

Examples of refesh rate figures are (because every manufacturer gives different figures) LG - Motion Clarity Index (MCI), Samsung - Clear Motion rate (CMR), Philips - Perfect Motion Rate (PMR), Sony - Motionflow XR and Panasonic - BLS (Back Light Scanning). All these figures are twice or more than the traditional 100Hz/200Hz refresh rate figures.

How did you get it returned, was it to a specific provider?

I've got similar issues, youview has ruined it, and I've got picture problems and a dead pixel (ok not enough in it's own right) but reported it to Tesco, they send out an engineer from Yorkshire Multimedia and couldn't find a fault as it didn't replicate.

I returned the 50" version of this to Amazon who fully refunded for a different picture issue, but tesco aren't as helpful

Well you wouldn't be impressed by the cheapest range Samsung produce unless you weren't expecting much!

I have been a AV geek for 40 years & the most recent purchase I was involved with was for my son (30) - have spent hours reading reviews we formed a view. THEN with sample 4k test video footage, images & test cards on a flash drive we spent the better part of a day visiting the Panasonic Centre, Sony Centre, Currys & Richer Sounds.

For his budget of £600-£700 these were our conclusions...
Sony screens - superb and 8/10. Android OS - clunky, unintuitive & slow.
Panasonic - not good unless you spent £1000 (the most highly reviewed model in the £6-700 range loved by all reviewers had definite colour banding easily visible)
Samsung - superb screens 8/10. OS - 6/10.
LG - generally excellent screens. WebOS coupled with their magic remote. 10/10 - smooth, easy to use even for our first attempt. It is point and click! Different price points have different qualities of screens, of course. The 770 series is superb and cannot be surpassed by anything else that is under £900.

The LG 770 40" is £500 while the 43" is £570 both available with 5/6 year warranties at that price, so more than this Sony, but easily worth it IMHO.

I didn't ignore any of the reviews or opinions, I just added a couple of positive opinions, in addition to the forum link you shared. I haven't used this TV myself yet so I don't have a personal view, but it seems that different users value different aspects. Android seems fresh and promising, but being a new thing, it certainly has and will probably continue to have several issues and bugs for some time. If someone wants something tested and established, I guess they should go for an LG or Samsung. I decided to try Sony, because I have recently used a Samsung J5500 and I was not impressed by its build quality, design or software.

I had one of these TVs, the same model as the OP - it went back after three months and two software updates.
The system:
* had major lip sync issues with HDMI sources
* it rebooted itself randomly
* it stopped accepting commands from the remote control for 10-20 seconds at a time
* didn't have advertised features (HDD recording, PiP) - these are still not available
* had a firmware update providing YouView (without recording) which disabled the DVB-S input

Checkout these messages from Sony, as well as the forum link posted earlier:

The Samsung range is good from the point of view of the OS (not as good as the LG WebOS, but a close second  )

As far as the J5500 is concerned it is Samsungs entry level product, so very much built to a price. Which is the polite way to say "average at best". The panel is pretty poor at only 50/60hz

Here is the conclusion from one particular review...
.
iEimis to janner43
3 Dec 15 #23
Well, personally I was starting to regret that we got an LG last year instead of Samsung as Samsung was even cheaper, and a little bit bigger, with 3D including nearly the same specs. However the main reason why I'm saying this is that I am struggling to benefit from a 'smart tv'. My Brother who has a 55' 4K Curved Samsung can easily play the flash videos/radios through the web browser, which I however struggling to do with my LG as it always says that flash is not supported and the only videos I can only watch through my TV is YouTube.

3 Dec 15 #21
I agree with you. The Sony community forum is full of the most appalling stories with this 2015 range of Android OS TVs.

The 2014 range from Sony was poor from the hardware side. Their 2015 screens are excellent - but selecting Android as their OS might have given them a USP - but it just isn't very good and suffers from unrelaible apps, a clunky interface and frequent crashes. It doesn't do anything like an acceptable job...

Personally my opinion on these is that although the screens are good, the OS is not.

The LG 770 series is superb & their WebOS 2.0 coupled with their "magic remote" is slick, reliable and smooth as silk.

Not voted either way. Sorry.

Been looking at the 55" version, AO are between £50 and £100 more expensive than else ware (depending on retailer) so the £100 brings them inline with the rest.

Warranty is a 5 year Sony warranty so should be valid from any retailer.
