Just got this through my email. Great price tbh. I know some of us like to build a PC ourselves but I've just priced this system up at SCAN (parts only) and it comes to £720.

Considering you get it built for you, overclocked to 4.40GHz and saves you £120 than if you bought the components separately, this is a great deal.

Nice gaming PC upgrade for your son or daughter.

PC Master race!

Come on guys seriously - saying a 960 is an ultra slow card is absolute c**p. OP this is a great deal, if a litre lopsided as others have said.

I just built an ITX pc with i3 6100, a 750ti OC and 16Gb DDR3L for under £300. That was with a TT case and a decent corsair PSU.

It equals/betters the performance of a PS4 and exceeds a XBONE. Plays all current games at high setting comfortably at 1080p

A 960 card is considerable better and will make a very, very good gaming machine. Yes there are faster for more money, but isn't there always?!?

It's true the i5 6600k is overkill for gaming - and only useful if your doing lots of encoding or rendering, that said, most GPU's share the workload these days...

But can we please stop trashing good posts with good spec kit, as its Mis-informing folks that don't know as much...

just bought one, but changed to the 620w psu, added the GTX970 4gb gaming edition + optical drive. Will get a 480GB SSD from one of the other many deals and install it. Couldn't really see any better deals than this now.

Tried doing the same specs without OS and HDD and it came out more expensive.
Asked these guys if i could get it cheaper without OS and HDD and they said no. The parts/software are part of a special price bundle they had. I could ask for them to be removed.. but it wouldn't result in any discount.

Was going to get a new laptop, but this is very tempting instead.
Current pc is 8 years old!
Only thing annoying me i want to remove the OS and Hard drive but when i do that on part picker it makes it £580.
Included costs £680, so this around an £60 saving!
Would want an GTX970 instead of the OS and hard drive but the mickey mouse RAM and PSU is putting me off...
Additionally GTX970 for around £250 when they have been out a year and no discounts... Not sure if i should wait for Pascal next year and just get the GTX960 now.

960 is an ultra slow card for very low budget PC. At the same time it is very overpriced and makes anyone who buys it a complete stupido. A match for this card is Intel pentium g3258.
In fact that pentium makes a better CPU than 960 makes a graphics card.
This configuration is appalling. Graphics match for this CPU would be radeon 390 at least.
8GB RAM is a good joke too.

It wouldn't be £614.98 then would it? You have to consider if this is a deal at this price and can it be bettered at this price point? The main thing I would be asking is does it have a decent PSU so I could put a GTX 970 or better in there in the future. The CPU is going to do the job for any game out there and for the foreseeable future.

A good rule of thumb is if you wanting a gaming pc the GPU should cost double the CPU.

My old pc that cost me 550 about 5 years a go is about on par with the current gen of consoles they are pathetic in terms of performance.

Most games for console that have high end graphics have to run at lower resolutions then 1080p and refresh rates of less then 60Hz.

Where as a 300-400 will manage at 1080p 60Hz even if it has to run at lower settings to achieve that it will still look better than a console.

Depends on who makes it - there are cheap PSUs made by quality OEMs. Also remember that a GTX 970 and an overclocked i5 is still going to struggle to break 350W in terms of actual 'drawn from the wall' power consumption. Lop off 80-100W if you're going for GTX 960.
MikeLondon
4 Dec 15 #41
I would also add that good PCs are expensive, I have a i7 6700k with 970 SLI (thats x2 GTX 970s) 16GB RAM 2400 DDR4, SSDs, gaming motherboard, hi spec PSU, I purchase some expensive fans and custom GPU fans - total cost about £1300. I have spent hours tinkering, playing with settings and modifying it, my point is you have to really be into it - if you don't want to spend the money and don't want to spend the time just get a PS4.

Hi Mike,

Sweet set up, but disagree that you "have to tinker about" - if you want best of the best, that's true. If you just want a solid, stable machine that can compete with the consoles - which is enough for 95% of the people, a decent gaming machine can be had for £300-£400 - with the upgrade path if they get the 'bug'
Easy2BCheesy

4 Dec 15 #35
Heat added because it's a decent deal, but anyone building a PC specifically for gaming in the not-too-distant future would be better off with a more powerful GPU. A 970 would give you more VRAM and more importantly give you everything you need to run a VR HMD (Head Mounted Display) such as Oculus Rift at the Recommended specs.

VR gaming is starting next year and will (imo) be huge, it'll be a bit pointless buying a gaming PC that doesn't have a GPU powerful enough. You could of course upgrade at a later date but I'm a firm believer that for a gaming PC the GPU has to be the most expensive component in the build by as much as possible. Just my twopenneth! :smirk:

They used to have a shop on Tottenham Court Road in London. I saw their prices on the Internet and tried to buy from the shop to save on delivery but it was always higher than the price advertised. They kept sprouting on about 'ecommerce'. For some reason I tried this twice on different occasions and always got the same level of 'service'.

In my quick search to see if the offer was from the same shop as described above I found that they had actually went into liquidation.

Probably from the level of 'service' they provide.

Fallout 4 is a graphically easy game to run.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_D26sn4wi0

The 960 gives you 24 frames per second on Witcher 3. TWENTY FOUR.
A 970, which isn't overclocked gives you 44 FPS, almost double the performance for an extra £90-100? Non-contest.

The 960 will struggle in two years time, whereas the 970 will still be playing on high.

For gaming you need around 60/FPS for a smooth experience.

Read this post which compares the more popular games.

Better CPU does have an effect, but not really necessary - GPU is more limiting, and any game on HIGH not ULTRA, running with an i3 or better should achieve 60/FPS and be a very good gaming machine.

CPU is one of the best you can get, hugely powerful.

And then it's partnered with a mediocre GPU. Very strange choice by OP?

Get the 970 for an extra £94 and you've got a very, very powerful PC. But with a 960 this is being held back.

Edit - Strange, it's £94 to add it to a different PC but to add it to this one it costs over £115, which is a bit of a rip off =/

Having said that not a bad price for what it is at face value.

If you're into building one yourself there are some great deals for components with freebies that you could sell on and recover some of the outlay

So for that £720 that you priced the same components for you could probably get a couple of better components at the same price if you're prepared to mess around selling the extras.

Not to detract from this deal, as this is a very good price.
