I wasn't talking about x86 but their technology patents, surely they wouldn't lose them?

Just to let u know that if amd or Intel die then they lose there rights to the patent.
Go google it.
If Intel kill amd they get to have exclusive rights to x86 and 64bit.

The recommendation is massively dependent on your CPU, and maybe PSU.
If the answer is "Unsure" the safest (and still a really good card) is the NVIDIA 960. Its low power and isn't bottle necked by the CPU.
If your son's CPU is i5+ then that opens up the 280/280x options.

AMD R9 380 with 4gb ram or a Nvidia 960 are in that range, might struggle to find a 960 with 4gb of ram for under £150 though, prices seem to be all over the place.
A 750ti would do the job pretty well at £95 but the 2gb of ram is very much a downside for some games.

Just so we're clear, this is the definition of what one would consider an AMD Fanboy.
You are irrationally supportive of AMD to the point that you would (jokingly) suggest stabbing yourself in the eye with a pencil.
Remember this the next time you claim someone else is an "NVIDIA Fanboy".
That said, I find it hard to recommend this card at this price. The 980 has been 35 cheaper, the 970 is over 100 cheaper, the 290x was 100 cheaper...
Just can't see the value here.
If you were already set on getting this card, then this is the best price right now, but surely this isn't a good time to buy.

At least a 900w psu recommended for 2 R290( give your self a bit of headroom).
Was looking at anything around that but found a 1500w (not 1600w lol just checked the box on top of my wardrobe) Silverstone strider gold psu for around the same price as some 1000w psu's.
My 5 year old antec tru power 750w bronze wouldn't have stood a chance with any xfire/sli setup.
I bought that psu before i got my GTX 980 otherwise i could have gone lower again.

Mad overkill. The 2 290's and a 9370 clocked at 5.219 drew a max 680 watts out of the wall under stress tests.
I had an old h50 corsair cooler, spent £30 on a fan and the corsair hg-10 bracket, was looking forward to see how far i could go in overclocking it, had to use an AMD bracket with it and the intel one was already in use. Was even looking to xfire another 290 as well, got myself a 1600w PSU ready(i know that is overkill but the price was fantastic)
****ed up the bracket installation so my xfire plans had to be changed.
Then i seen the GTX 980 for £275, never seen the price that low and jumped on it, even with the stock cooler.
Looking to get another gtx 980 in sli to power a 55" 4k TV, when i do actually find the right model, at the right price.
I doubt i will ever get anywhere near drawing 1600w from my psu now, even with 3x980.

But mine does. Itsc watercooled and I won the silicone lottery with regards to overclocking but it beats a 980 at less cost.

Had the Gigabyte R9 290 WindForce OC for around a year, tried sticking corsair water cooler on it as the noise was horrendous, throttling was abysmal at time, ballsed it up installing the pump.
Tried getting the Sapphire one (quieter, better cooler) but the prices some people wanted were ridiculous.
Bought a stock GTX 980 (£275) about 4 months ago, put an overclock on it, can barely here the fan kick in.
Hadn't bought a Nvidia card since the 880 gts, up until the r290 i was happy with AMD but to suggest that any 290 beats a GTX 980 is factually wrong. It could be argued that i am AMD fanboy as well.

390 is still a better buy though, 5-7% difference between the two at the same clocks
Plus the 290x 8GB version is more than this anyway
