Still cracking card, can match a 390X when clocked the same. Only where the 390X extra VRAM comes into play with higher resolutions does the 290X concede to it IMO.
€269.90 = approx. £202.25 using Amazon currency conversion, could workout cheaper if using a currency conversion friendly card.
This is how I see it regarding the extra ram/future proofing aspect on 390/X, once the ram really start to come into play the GPU may not be sufficient.

this is not the same as the 390x the 290x this the same as the 390..... the 390x is about 10FPS more then the 290x so overclock the 390x and then you have 10FPS more

The GPU is a Hawaii XT on 390X and 290X, the 390/X are rebrands of 290/X.
Here is page from HardOCP review where clock vs clock is tested.
In reviews of say a MSI 390X clocked at 1100 GPU 1525 RAM against a 290X at 1000 GPU 1250 RAM and of course you'll see a difference then.
When overclocking the 390/X do reach higher RAM speeds generally but GPU clock aids performance more and from what I've seen 390/X is not guaranteed to OC further levels than a 290/X. Technically the 390/X is just a higher ref clock version of 290/X.
Just Wondering

spotted this a few days back its a great deal, as 390x is just a rebadge 290x. 2990x however runs very hot and 390x has been tweaked and couple of flaws been modified.

This or the 8g 390x for gaming at 1440p please?
Would a 16gb DDR3 and i5-3570k cause a bottleneck?

Another compare besides HardOCP, check middle 2 columns where 290X & 390X are same clocks and view the 1440P results.
I have i5 4690K (Haswell Refresh/Devil's Canyon) and only TIM / 100MHz base & turbo clock changed vs i5 4670K (Haswell). I can clock my CPU from stock all the way to 4.9GHz with 2400MHz 16GB @ 1T and see no bottleneck from lower CPU clocks vs MAX OC in gaming scenarios.

IMO your paying 23.7% more over the 290X and your not likely to see the same % of performance gain. Personally I'd pocket that saving and use on next GPU and get the 290X for now.

Cheers for info on CC.
I only swapped my Tri-X 290 for a Vapor-X 290X due to some good deals around just as 390/X were starting to be sold.
Luckily I made no loss on conversion as I managed to sell my 290 with only a £25 drop from purchase price (used it 3mths, sold with discounted final value fees ebay), gained a Asus DCUII 290X via Besopke offers/quidco. Which equaled £201.98 - £34.34 = £167.64, sold that later for £225 and got a Vapor-X 290X for same price at Aria.
In benches where I clocked the 290 same as 290X there was very small minimum FPS difference and very close average FPS. IIRC I even did some tests comparing them both clocked at 1100/1475.
The extra 10% shader on a 290X did not equate to 10% extra performance vs 290, when at same GPU/RAM clocks for me. My system is a i5 4690K clocked to 4.9GHz CPU 4.3GHz CACHE 16GB 2400MHz [email protected]
Personally I wouldn't get the 290X deal if your gonna lose a lot selling your 290.

No worries , I used to be all for used GPU at one point, when a £200 card died on me within 3mths of buying and had to fork out another £250 for a new one I stopped buying used, I wasn't even OC'ing the card. When recently I sold mine on ebay I was surprised people were buying them for price I had them at.
Been avidly keeping an eye on ebay to snag a used 290/X to do some further bios experiments plus [email protected] TBH lucky if you find a decent one for under £150. Most seem to go for £150+ and then I think to myself I wouldn't pay that vs knowing I can have new unused with warranty for £50 or so quid more for long term usage.

'When looking at our benchmark results, there is no visible improvement between 8 GB vs. 4 GB of VRAM on the R9 290X. I am more tempted now. I game at 1440p now as I've just got a new monitor. Will the 8GB VRAM come into play within the the next couple of years? Or am I better off buying this now and upgrading couple of years down the line anyway
1440p: 2560x1440 is where the VRAM begins to get stressed out, starting with Heaven using 1.6GB compared to 819MB - a 100% increase in VRAM consumption. But Far Cry 4 is where the fun starts, with 3.7GB used, up from 2.8GB without AA. The Witcher 3 again doesn't consume much more at all, you don't notice any difference between 2168MB and 2197MB being used.
Battlefield 4 jumps up from 1.9GB to nearly 2.3GB at 1440p with AA applied, while Metro: Last Light uses another 200MB+ of VRAM at 1440p with AA enabled. Shadow of Mordor uses just under 5GB of VRAM at 1440p with AO enabled. Grand Theft Auto V uses much more VRAM at 1440p with AA enabled, jumping up from 3.9GB to nearly 4.6GB of VRAM.

Unfortunately I didn't read the advice online and got the multi-input one which is less overclock enabled (you can still overclock them slightly) but that wasn't a huge deal breaker to be honest. I am very impressed with the step up to 1440p (especially from a 21.5" 1080p bog standard monitor!). The colour response and size is really good too.
