Does it have to be used internally or will a sata to usb cable allow me to use as an external drive?

You can use with this cable. Also have in past used the circuit from a external 3.5" HDD (the hard disc went into a PC) and then used a USB cable and the 240v psu to connect for OS migration.

i bought both this weekend, the 960GB AND the 480GB (scan) - problem is I only need 1 (the 960GB) so will probably have to return the 480GB at cost, or fleabay it :-/ Fair play to Scan though, ordered friday evening - delivered Saturday lunchtime! So its here to post.
