Best to do some research on the game, some games the drive speed will not affect the game at all, however other games will give you faster loading screens, rarely an increase in FPS though so if loading screens are not better i would not put the game on your SSD

Great price, but might not be a good idea as it would be tempting to use for os, programs & docs where as it is recommended to keep files on a HDD (partially due to easier recovery if something goes wrong). In that case the 960gb is probably far more than anyone would ever need
jacksonliam to jamieukonline
27 Nov 15#36
It's not recommended to keep files on a HDD. Nor is it recommended to keep files on a separate drive to the OS...
You get the very minor advantage of bring able to reinstall the operating system without having to restore a backup of the files, but you can do that with partitions too.
It is of course recommended to keep a separate backup of any data you don't want to loose. And/or an offsite backup of any data you don't want to loose in a fire.

To answer your questions, best practice varies depending on the user and the requirement. I personally like to keep my OS and apps on separate logical drives, even if on the same physical drive, but unless you know why that is you'll get very little from doing that.

I'm new to the use of ssd so can someone give any quick advice
I've got a Samsung rf711 i7 8gb ram which has a dual hdd bay and maximum 1.5tb
I've just brought a 480 gb ssd for 1 bay, is it worth putting this in the other bay with a fresh install of Windows 10 on top, or is this pointless being for be storage aspect and just keeping the current sata in their instead with the 480 ssd?
I'm just thinking j could put the 1tb in to my ps4 and then have a stupidly fast laptop
(The process of setting up a ssd or transferring from my sata to ssd I have no idea - if there is a way I can transfer win7 premium from my sata to the ssd would be ideal saving me from having to buy a op system)

Yes its possible to use a 120GB drive for your OS, but do yourself a favor and don't, its more hassle than you'd think. Yes Windows 10 can be installed on a 20GB partition. However, if you do anything other then emails and web browsing on your computer you'll start to notice how quickly those GBs vanish. I could give you detailed examples, but just believe someone that has a 120gb C drive and go with a 240gb+.

I did the same with my 2012 MBP this week. Unbelievable difference. I installed OS X via USB caddy before swapping over. Even when running over USB 2 it seemed more responsive than my previous 7200rpm that I dropped in a few years ago. Considering getting the smaller one to boost an old Core 2 Duo MBP we have in the house.
I asked them to pricematch and support agent on chat said Amazon will not pricematch.

It's not. I don't mean it's bad practice to keep your files on a separate drive to your OS, but it's certainly not best practice to the point that you advise people to buy smaller OS drives.
In a desktop it's obviously cheaper to keep your user data on spinning rust, but it's not *better*. And with a laptop having a huge SSD is a much more convenient than plugging in external drives.
What benefit exactly do you guys think you are getting by keeping your files on a separate HDD to the OS?

I find it more convenient when using a smaller SSD (currenty have 128GB) and it is better when you have a smaller SSD to leave it enough extra space and increase lifespan, as it is more able to perform garbage collection and performance degrades less. But that applies to smaller drives, not this one.
As far as keeping files separate, it's advisable to either have backups or keep files somewhat separated to reduce the loss if you have a single drive failure.
The reason I keep the OS mostly separate from files is because it makes it easier when you change OS drive or OS. While I don't do it that frequently, having everything off the OS drive means I never even need to think about whether I will lose many files. But then by the time I usually reinstall or similar I end up getting a new drive for it anyway.
Mechanical HDD -> 96GB SSD -> 128GB SSD -> 250GB SSD for my OS drives.
On my laptop I had a partition that I left on there set up by the manufacturer because then it's easier to do an OS reinstall without losing files, but it's still on the same physical drive.

Doubling the number of drives just doubles the chance of having a drive failure - spreading data across multiple drives (without deplication/parity) is not making it safer!
High performance data centers used to be full of 15k spinning rust in RAID0 to get the required throughput, but even with the much higer $/GB of enterprise SSDs, the TCO works out a bit cheaper because you don't need so many of them to get the performance (and they're a bit more reliable) so you're not always having to swap out drives.

WTF?? It's not recommended to keep files on a HDD?? What are you smoking? Nor is it recommended to keep files on a separate drive to the OS... Wow! There are plenty of instances where storing files on a separate drive to the OS is actually preferred. I wouldn't expect an enthusiast such as yourself to understand why, but this is a fact.
Good luck saving your data using partitions when you have a total drive failure.
Awesome Googling tekkers!
Lol what?? What's deplication? You mean duplication? Doubling (or increasing) the number of drives is the whole reason we have RAID... to spread or duplicate data over multiple drives, therefore decreasing the chance (in some cases) of losing data to a drive failure. If you were to use simple RAID-0 your rule would be true, but that's about it.
