Yes if you can look beyond the serious light bleed issues it has and are watching 1080p or 4K content. Put Freeview on it and it looks like a 240p YouTube video.

I replaced my VT series 50" Panasonic plasma with the lower 55JU64000 model, My hand was forced due to my Plasma dying.
I was expecting to be disappointed but was surprised to find the picture on the new samsung LCD is better across all sources and the picture actually has a nice natural quality to it.

In my Currys they have the tv's plugged into their digital tv service (Freeview). On Sunday I was in my local store and on the same row they had the LG 49UF770v, the Samsung posted and the Sony KDL-50W8009C. In my opinion the Samsung had the worse picture viewing BBC1, channel 1. The LG was just marginally better and the clear winner on BBC1 SD was the Sony. The LG and Samsung just looked a little unfinished around the edges of people heads, bodies etc. On BBC1 HD, channel 101 the pictures were better obviously and nothing to choose between the LG and Samsung but the Sony was still better in my opinion. If 4k tv's are supposed to upscale 1080 channels there was definitely no evidence of this but as I notice my own tv's picture is better when using an external tuner via hdmi then perhaps the upscaling only works via hdmi and not via aerial or satellite input.

I was looking at purchasing either the LG 49UF850v or the Samsung UE50JU6800. My own tv is just under a year old and is an LG 50LB650v. Both these tv's cost £150.00 and £200.00 more than I paid for my tv yet the picture quality was no better and decided not to buy. The picture quality on both tv's were no better than the LG 50LF561v which was in the aisle in front of these. Not 4k but at £499.00 as good a picture for a lot less money.

I decided not to buy anything in the end. The Sony was the best picture easily on SD and slightly better on HD when viewing channels 101, 102, 103 and 104. Manufacturer's are very clever at creating the right videos to put on usb and stick in the back of the tv but viewing from about 8 feet away there wasn't any difference I could see between the 1080 tv's and the 4k ones. Eventually most screens will be 4k but more pixels doesn't necessarily mean a better image.

Yeah I also saw this in some owners forums...
Trying to decide what to got for, ideally want 60" but some good looking 4k 55" deals

Philips 55PUT6400 - £629 @ Argos - Cheapest, Android, ok reviews, no extended warranty

Samsung 55JU6800 - £799 @ JL - Seems very good value, cant really find direct review, question over 55" screen compared to 50" and 60", 5 year warranty

LG 55UF850V - £850 @ Currys - Seems a good spec, good review, 5 year warranty

Fed up of looking at TVs...

According to the European model sold in Holland then panel in the 50" is made by CHE MEI (Innolux) and the 55" made by BOE. No Samsung or Sharp panels are listed for these tv's sold in Holland. This is something that purchasers should not be put off by. If you like the tv then buy it. Just because it has a Samsung panel in it does not mean its going to be better. It may have brighter colours or better contrast but it is how it appears to the user that matters most along with how the panel copes with movement etc and reliability. I had a samsung panel fail at under 2 years. I have a CHE Mei panel in one of our LG's and it's a lovely picture.

Also rumour has it that the 50" is only a 60Hz panel. I have no evidence of this as technical reviewers don't appear to want to tell you. Perhaps they are slightly biased but looking at the models on rtings.com it would appear that the only 100Hz tv's in the 6000 Samsung range were the curved ones.

I purchased this for £1000 three months ago and its ok if you can tolerate the horrible light bleed in the corner on darker scenes. Also Netflix on the Samsungs Smarthub is seriously flawed and just doesn't work consistently. I have to view Netflix using the PS4 and admittedly the 4k picture is stunning. £799 is a fair price in my opinion but if you love your tech and tv then just be aware of the light bleed issue.
Jaybeam to Gravesy166
2 Dec 15 #24
Is the light bleed visible in daytime or just night. What's the picture like on a grey screen - do you see any dirty screen effect? I had the Sony 55x8509c which had very good uniformity on a black screen no bleed but on a grey screen it was awful. This caused dark scenes to take on a greenish tinge down both sides. In the end this and other issues sent it back.
Gravesy166
2 Dec 15 1 #22
It's ok but i would'nt buy it if i'd noticed the light bleed problem instore. At £800 it's ok if you can put up with the light bleed and Netflix issue on the Smarthub.

I got the currys deal & collected my tv Sunday. I swapped for last years model which was 1080p. I was told by Currys this has a smart remote (acts like a mouse & is much easier to use) like my old tv, but be warned it don't. The picture quality isn't as good as I was hoping if I am honest & mine has to be returned due to serious clouding in the corners... I will be getting a replacement (as I sold my old one - bad move...) Don't get me wrong, it's a nice tv & the Netflix freebie is a bonus, but I just been a little disappointed compared to my 2014 55" Samsung.

It seems all the tv's have screen problems of one sort or another.I'm at a loss to know what to do. My non led 40" Sony looked better than the 55" if I Brought it closer. I don't think the 4K's upscale very good either.

I have the 50 in. and the 60 in. version and both of them are great! I'm really pleased with them both. I paid £799 for the 50 and the price went down to £699 3 days later. Currys refunded the £100 with a smile. If the 55 in had been on sale at £799 then I would have bought it like a shot. My advice would be to buy one online to try and then you have 14 days to return with no hassle if you have problems.

good set of reviews on here, first few pages are worrying, then things seem to get a lot better with the occasional comment about bleed which seems to go when the tv is replaced. Was going to go for it but think I will wait for it to come back in in Costco with their 90 returns just in case, don't really need it, our 10 year old one is still going strong well that will probably have put the end to that

I just got the Sony KD55X8509CBU from Currys on Friday, very good out of the box, but superb when properly adjusted (the 10 gamma adjustment points, cutting down on the aggressive sharpening and noise reduction etc.), no noticeable light bleed, very realistic colours and great black levels. Better than the Samsung 6800 I had considered (and my mate has), but £280 better? Not so sure. Would definitely pay £180 over the Samsung when it was £899 (and JL were out of stock at £799).

Just buy whatever the cheapest you can get from any reliable brands, as long as they are 4k & big enough for you. The rest of the specs are just bonus....

All those picture quality things are not really that important after a while as you will be lay back on your sofa most of the time... unless you always like the pixel peeping or have particular needs for certain features...

Jaybeam
3 Dec 15 #51
No joedb I think the panel was probably OK by the present standards, the android operating system is buggy and slow, sync problems sometimes, switches itself back on sometimes, screen mirroring is awful, but my main disappointment was the upscalling from SD i.e. Freeview, dvd. From what I've been reading though, I don't think the Samsung will be any better. Unless you're viewing a lot of 4K material I personally think a 1080p tv is a better option.

I went for the 50 inch at Currys too. My Black Friday 13% Quidco tracked which was a bonus.

The JU6800 50/60 inch models are reported as having Samsung VA panels instead of the Chinese 55 inch IPS panel in the same range.

I spent a bit of time checking out the showrooms and and at this price range was really impressed by these models.
cammie81 to kingbal
3 Dec 15 #67
I was having the same dilemma (before it went out of stock again).

On the one hand the 55 is only £100 more (£30 if you go for accidental coverage like I did) and I trust JL way more than Currys.
On the other hand the VA panel in the 50 is supposed to have a better picture and handle motion better than the IPS panel in the 55. I've read the VA's don't have a great viewing angles but it looked ok to me in the shop.

Either way the dilemma is redundant due to no stock and I reckon both versions are pretty decent TVs for the money.

No you just ring them if you have any issues and they normally send a local ish company to repair it (who they have contracts with not just your nearest tv shop).

Yes OLED is vastly better . But wait for prices to drop. These will drop more of course as more OLED come in and become mainstream. Think how much 4k TVs were last year! Same as OLEDs are now...
PhiloBeddo
3 Dec 15 #68
That is a good deal if you can get one, although I do suspect 4K is a gimmick to stop an exodus to OLEDs which have been dropping in price in the USA. Also remember with TVs, high model numbers mean higher specs. I just bought the 6400 Samsung from Richer Sounds at £500, told the wife it's her Christmas present which just about did the trick and sprung it out the box just in time for Strictly. When it comes to conquest purchases you'll need some man tactics, unless you're filthy rich I suppose.

Yeah but the manufacturers control the prices. Samsung et al do not want (read will not let) the OLED prices to drop to a point where nobody will purchase the LCD TVs anymore. The only option in that situation would be to stop manufacturing LCD TVs altogether.

Remember what happened to Plasma, though. It was by far the better tech. but it was killed. The same could happen to OLED. Dark forces are at work!

I couldn't agree with you more. Although I was only looking at the 50" sets, nearly side by side in Currys the Sony was easily the clear winner. Better picture on SD and HD on BBC1 and the Samsung was just sooooo slow in populating channel numbers, tv guide etc. The Sony was very quick, much better than my LG. The only thing I hated with the Sony was they remote. I much prefer the big brick that LG and Samsung do but then the most important thing with a tv is the picture which Sony won.

Smartguy1
3 Dec 15 #91
I suppose its what you get used to but if I bought a Sony, which I very nearly did on Sunday, I would have to change the remote. Not sure why the Japanese thinks that anyone who buys a Sony would have Netflix and likes football !! Apart from that I found the remote rather busy and too small. Saying that though there are plenty of decent after market remotes out there (not from the pound shop) and to me the 50" 8009C model in Currys was superior to the 4k models on offer by the competition that were £100 and £150 more. There maybe some further discounts offered on 1080 tv's that maybe worth a look on Boxing Day which is usually when Currys have another sale but doubt they will be many Sony offers.

Did you know that Sony were offering a 5 year warranty from 1st October. Currys told me they didn't know anything about it but I picked it up online. See the link below. It may be worth giving them a call.

I am not sure how long this offer lasts for as I was unable to find an end date within their terms and conditions. It also does not state who their participating partners are which isn't right but may be worth giving them a call.

Thanks for reply very helpful,

I recently bought Sony KD55X8005CBU 4k from Amazon deal for £599, it was amazing in picture quality and upscaling 720 p videos also, as you said BBc channels looks better form few setting. but I have serious issues with Android OS, i complained Amazon already replaced once, new update came yesterday still have issue like it was rebooting when playing content from external HDD more often and freezing Kodi hangs. Also it looses wifi password. If i turn off TV by pressing remote power button 5 seconds, TV turns off and it will on again can't shutdown.. very bad. :disappointed:

I decided to but this Samsung UE55JU6800 and went to currys yesterday and check both side by side, I feel picture quality with 4k and 1080 no difference both rocks, i haven't got chance to test low 720 /youtube videos to test upscaling :disappointed:

I am happy for the price i paid to sony, but still if issues like rebooting i am not happy and still in confusion ... i still have time to return until Jan..

Other Sony Android issue s.. is hell https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/2015-bravia-android-tv-issues/td-p/1949079/highlight/false/page/329

Any suggestions ?

For me the most important thing is picture quality. I don't need a smart tv as I have other devices. My LG jas timeshift so I can pause, rewind etc but to be honest its crap in comparison with my Youview box. It's a nice extra but thats it.

I would still stick with the Sony as it has the best picture in SD which is how I watch a lot of my tv. I would still pick Samsung over LG if you are wanting a smart tv as I don't like the way LG have ruined what used to be an easy way to scroll around the menu. Saying that though WEBOS 02 on LG is a much needed improvement of WEBOS 01 and the new magic remote is a nice feature.

Its all good having nice little extras but to me picture quality is paramount. As I already have a Youview box and other equipment to play on demand and catch up services the issue that some Sony owners are having would not concern me as it is part of the tv I probably would not use. I would also never purchase a tv online from Amazon. It would always be one that I could easily return with the 30 day period so would need to be an instore purchase.
