It's the 3rd generation in the Samsung gear Vr series.
Gear vr 320 was designed for the note 4.
Gear vr 321 was designed for the s6 and s6 edge
the gear vr lite is the newer cheaper model which has mounts for the s6, s6 edge, note 5 and se edge+.
It's the 'consumer' model at this reduced price, compared to the older £169 price tag.

Don't compare this to £5 Google Cardboard headsets, this is far, far beyond those. It has an SD card slot for storing VR videos, games etc and fans to keep the lenses clear. The games available for this are a real eye opener. If you have a compatible Samsung phone, this is THE headset to demo VR to people.

Can anyone comment on Gear VR vs PS4 VR?
Mind you I don't need either, but hey when was the last time I bought something that I truly need thanks to HUKD?

seriously £80 for a piece of plastic that might not fit your next phone. Where as £10 for a cheapo one that still fits almost any phone . I don't get it.

It's really simple, ever so simple. Cardboard is just total utter garbage compared to the Samsung GearVR and if you'd just played the game I played you'd want to tell everyone about it. Tactera, simply mind blowing. Omg this is literally the best thing I've bought in the last 10 years. Jaw droppingly good.
I'm really not going overboard here, beg steal borrow, get an S6 and play Tactera. I will be playing the 3 levels from that game all day tomorrow. It's more than genius. I really feel I must have been dreaming, all other gaming I've ever played has just been relegated to total crap now, seriously all those Steam games I have, I just want to play Tactera instead, 3 levels of sci fi gaming. That is just mental what I've seen, mental. God I'm going to have to say WOW again. Tactera has just made 2D gaming worthless and primitive to me. The future came up to me and said excuse me have you seen this, it's literally like some one from the future appearing and showing you the technology they have (I don't think that's ever happened, but I imagine it would be like that). I feel like I'm living in medieval times and someone just showed me a smartphone. I'm seriously thinking of calling a vicar and saying you know that time when people thought mad people were Witches, well surprise, he'll dunk me exorcise me and then burn me if he sees Tactera.
I'm going to get a massive tube of superglue and glue this GearVR to my head, not taking it off again once I finish typing this.

People listen up here  I've just found the killer app and it's just a demo called Tactera. Literally amazing, I have never seen or played anything like it. All other games I've ever played just seem useless now and that's just a 3 level demo. Bloody amazing. I thought I was dreaming, maybe I am. I now seen the massive potential in VR, how can I go back to all those games I have on Steam now I've seen and played that?! Omg I want more, that is just pure genius.
Download Tactera it's just a concept demo, but they need to make a full game out of that. Nah I'm sure I was dreaming, my mind is blown WOW WOW WOW.
If you doubt VR, if you hate the pixels and low resolution, trust me you won't see it when you play Tactera. The potential of gaming in VR is staggering now.

Does the screen appear pixelated when viewing through one of these? Also, is it possible to watch your own video files using a media player, like VLC? cheers! ;-)

Gear VR has on board sensors developed in partnership with Oculus which makes it more than enough a reason to get this and not some cheaper attempt which just rely on the phone sensors. That and the "infrastructure" built for the apps makes this a cut above the rest...by miles.

Terrible Product naming here, especially when they have the 'Innovator' edition still on the website for £169.
To clarify for anyone not sure, this Gear VR 'Lite' is simply the new Gear VR.
It is the refined, better version of the Innovator edition which is double the price on Samsung's website. Talk about confusing...

I ordered a cardboard headset from ebay over the weekend. Don't expect it to be as good as this but wanted to test it out as they are very cheap.
I'm interested in the PS4 VR and would be amazing to play with GT7 on my racing rig!

I lot of people are just assuming the cheaper google cardboard are just as good as the Samsung vr , I own dk2 and Samsung note 5 imported, and these beat all the cheap google card board, Chinese import 20 quid things Hands Down, I know because I have tried them, one headset does not fit all , you need adjustable lens, the distance between people eyes are all different , so if your thinking of just buying some cheap crap like I did ,you might be able see proper though them, all get a blurred vision, with the adjustment anyone can use them.
scooby555 to retro65
1 Dec 15#21
Your right, cheapies are ok for a quick test, I remember the cardboard was blurred and you had to fiddle with it so much just to be able to see a blurry image.
Obviously if you have a dk2 then you know the scene well, so advice well taken, I think this will get cheaper as we move towards the release of Sonys PS4 VR add on.

are all these headsets artificially limited to a certain phone brand or are they crosscompatible? i.e. would i be able to use LG g4 in this and a Samsung phone in LG VR? I'm not asking about generic chinese headsets off ebay/amazon.

1 Dec 15#10
I would certainly go for one of the other £20 or less headsets that are Google cardboard compatible and work with a much wider range of handsets, both android and iOS if it were just to experience vr. The Samsung gear vr only works with the 4 latest sammy handsets, and the app side of things is more constrained by having to be accessed through its own gear vr App Store.

Fits the note 5 you say,so that rules anyone out in Europe then as Samsung didn't see fit to sell it over this side the pond.
