I work in retail and can't understand y any company would reduce so low wouldn't be more beneficial to write it off and not sell at silly pennies .
The mind boggles lol

I think it's due to how the system works, they can't give it for free as each stock item has to have a transaction, so 1p is the lowest they can legally get rid of it to balance their stock inventory/ point of sales systems they use. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

What do they do with the trees?

I know a fair amount about how B&Q systems operate, and it's all to do with saving money.
B&Q stores are ranked on "Shrink". Shrink is stock which is removed from inventory without a transaction. This includes theft, damages, scrapped, etc. Shrink levels affect the performance of the store, including things like manager bonuses .
If they discount it to 1p, the discount will be in reports, but the stock has been "sold". The discount level is down to the store, most will choose a price depending on how quickly they want to get rid of them to make space. Discounting to 50p or 1p doesn't really make any difference.
If they just scrap them, the store is going to be hit for the cost of the trees - it's no different, internally, to somebody coming in and stealing all of them, as they have to be "removed" from the system. Say they have 100 left, at retail of £30 average that's a £3k write-off. Not only that, but the store has to incur the cost of disposing them.
Basically, it's internal politics/balancing the books for corporate.

It's the same with any product / packaging.
Business waste doesn't get cheaper the more you use it.
The idea is to reduce waste, ideally for the environment, but businesses do it purely to save money, naturally.
For everyone thinking they're just unloading their crap onto us, well it is true, but its recyclable after we're finished with it

Yeah exactly, they're basically getting you to dispose of their waste. Having it at 1p gets you to checkout so everything goes through the system instead of people barging in and thinking they can simply lift stuff from the shop floor into their car because it's free. :man:

My local B&Q were selling them for £1 yesterday with about a dozen left.

Because 50p vs 1p to them is nothing, and probably costs more to dispose of so they just want them to be taken away. They probably can't do it for free as it needs to go through the tills

The kind of cake that you DON'T give the Kids at Xmas but DO give it the MIL? :stuck_out_tongue:
Surely it's only Tulips that you can get from Amsterdam?
Having worked there a fair bit, I cant think of anything else you would just come across walking down the streets and leading unwitting Tourists down blind alleys to the point where they all get stuck :sunglasses:

I went in to get some cup hooks and took the opportunity to ask, all i can do is report back what she said. I know that they have done this in previous years, so have no reason to not believe her.

Before you ask, she did say she believed this would be national on the Pot Grown trees as they last longer, the Cut prices have been allowed to be flexible.

why would they do it for a 1p when they could easily do it for £2 or £1 or even 50p? at 1p They may aswell give it away. doesn't sound real to me.
