Never seen as many armchair investors and people rabidly loyal to 2 companies that wouldn't give 2 **** about you than when there is an AMD vs Nvidia "argument" on the internet. If you take a side you are a moron, full stop.

This card is great, so is Nvidias offering on this level, you are all arguing over an average 10fps gap nearly all of the time.

The guy can't wait to start paying more for gpu's that only get about 1 year of driver support before losing performance.

Imagine if there were no AMD cards to compare performance with? How would we tell if the 1-2 year old Nvidia cards are slower due to lack of driver optimizations or hardware? The kepler cards were slower in Witcher 3 compared to their AMD equivalents and initially Nvidia just said it was because they were old hardware. Eventually they were forced to accept that the drivers were holding them back. Thank AMD cards comparisons for that.

The AMD 390 8GB is the best buy at this price and a bit faster than a GTX 970. For DX12 the 390 rivals the more expensive GTX 980.

Dirt rally is a great game.
This GPU is faster than the more expensive Nvidia GTX970 and has 4.5 GB more Vram. Not as power efficient but a clear leader when it comes price/performance at this price.

The 970 has 4GB VRAM...

Not sure why you enter most GPU deals to bash NVIDIA. They don't have 80% of the market for being crap.

4.5 GB more full speed GDDR5 VRam. That's a fact.
How can I be dissing them if I am pointing out the truth?

If they had 4GB Vram I would have stated that. Still massive amounts more for a better performing lower priced GPU.

Also, 80% of the PC GPU sector, yes Nvidia do - I wouldn't care if it was 10% or 90%. Makes no difference to me.

How about the overall gaming sector including consoles. Way over 90% market share to AMD I believe.

There's no denying the 3.5 + 5 VRAM situation with the 970, but this having 8GB shouldn't be a selling point unless you're going CFX, for gaming.

Onto the product. Powercolor boo (yes OK) but while the fan plastic and surround won't be the best the boards on their PCS lines have always been good with quality components. Should be good for 1080p eyefinity setups on most games. Bit of a stretch for 4k gaming mind. Not a bad price if you get free delivery.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. I'm building a gaming PC over Christmas and still after a graphics card. I was considering the GTX 970 as I'd quite like my GFX card to last a couple of years.

This seems on paper to be a better card for a lower price, am I correct or is that a noob assumption?
Thanks
ollie87 to captinjack8

It is a slightly better card. Probably going to be better in DirectX12 too so might be worth it over the 970 at this price.

Nvidia have a track record of gimping there previous generation cards, in order to make the newest stand out.

AMD did delay the latest driver (for anything not 3 series) when they released the 3 series, so that reviews showed 3 series as better than 2 series. (overuse of the word series)
Though this is not usual / typical behaviour of AMD and their cards tend to age better.

If you list any requirements you have, there'll be plenty of people willing to help. I'm going to assume you will play at max of 1080p?

Both this card and the 970 will be overkill for this currently and should still be ok in a couple of years. you could probably go a little lower. I would probably get something a little cheaper for 1080p and see what the remaining cash will go towards when the prices have adjusted with release of new cards

You won't get decent performance at 4K 60 fps with any card in this price range. The 390 can display 4K 30fps at the moment but a 4K 60 fps display port to HDmMI 2.0 adapter is due to be released soon for those who need one.

17 Dec 15 #30
It's not fast enough really for 4K gaming, you're gonna need a 980Ti and higher.

Or you could buy a £20 adapter http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/displayport-12-to-hdmi-20-uhd-active-adapter.html and be fine.

Well you are not gaming at this price point at 4k anyway with AMD of Nvidia. Plus there is the input lag over a monitor. If you want to game casually on a 4k TV just set everything to ultra at 1080p and let the TV scale it. At 6ft away it will probably look better than the med setting at native 4k anyway.

This.

I have a R9 280 3GB, yes it's got about a 22% overclock on it over even the stock overclock it came with but still manages well over 60fps in GTA V @ 1080p on very high settings. Granted it gets very hot (83 degrees C) but it'll be fine for a couple of more years, not bad for a card that originally launched in 2012 as the Radeon HD 7950.

You have got to be kidding, AMD is one of the least quality stocks to buy right now.

It's performing terribly. Take a look at the 1 or 5 year graphs, the trend is shocking.

It's so low that the fluctuation is very high.

In September, they sank to 1.66, right now they are at 2.54. Go back 1 year, a high of 3.31. 5 years? 9.29.

So, if you think AMD is a wise stock investment, you may well have completely lost the plot.
GAVINLEWISHUKD

Thanks for your advice! You are correct that I won't be gaming in anything higher than 1080p. Ideally I'd like a rig that can handle battlefront and FPS's on high settings, as well as the occasional RPG that might come out. At the moment I only really play LoL regularly, but that's mostly because my current iMac can't really handle much.

I've already bought :
Intel i5 Skylake 6500
MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Motherboard
8GB DDR4 Ram (got the bundle deal on here for the motherboard and RAM last week)

I wouldnt say this is overkill if you want to be able to max setting out (ultra) at 1080p.
Anything lower than this card (AMD 380X - The closest in performance to it) and you will have to start lowing setting on somemore recent titles. Also its nice to have a little power in reserve if required. You WILL NEED a 600watt or higher PSU, although in theory with this your setup and the 390 you would most likely not exceed over @400watts when gaming.

Corsair 600Watt PSU:

At no point in the last year was AMD at 1.35. Your advice is based on fiction. The 52 week low is 1.61

Your stock advice appears as jaded and biased as your graphics card advice.

I would steer clear of stock advice that suggests AMD has "doubled" in recent months as if that is a sign of a strong stock.

A better way of looking is that AMD how volatile it has been.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AMD

It's a dangerous stock to play with as over the last 5 years, the price has nose dived from 9.29 all the way to 1.61! It's at 2.54 today, but that's not a *good* thing, overall it's way down while the entire market has been way up over that same 5 years.

The volatility and risk is huge. The company has posted consecutive years of losses, it's a really tough stock to suggest to an average stock buyer, it's not safe.

If you are *lucky* and buy low/sell high, that's completely different.

Please, no one listen to anyone's advice on this forum over AMD stock, especially not Ferrari's, it's a dangerous game to play.

17 Dec 15 #49
correct, you said so, not good for 4k on hdmi connection and even with the new adaptor you talking about, AMD will still not allow custom resolutions not even from his DP connection. There was an unofficial way until few month ago to do that but strangely I cannot make use anymore with latest drivers. Choosing a custom resolution on NVIDIA gpu's it will allow to also get the minimum amount of frames needed to have a smoother game and depends of the game itself. the huge advantage by choosing a custom resolution is that you can choose panoramic views while playing a game like: 3840x1600 or 1440 or even less, or anything else like 2560x1080, just anything, even at 2560x1080 is like having a monitor of 32inches in a 50" 4ktv. It is like having more than one monitor side by side but all in one screen and far superior than having 2 or more monitors side by side which are usually uncontrollable and with a useless distorted picture on the sides. This can obviously be achieved with large 4k TV's. try to believe it. I got a fast response Panasonic 50" and I spotted the potentiality of using it as a monitor from day one and it stands on my desk since day one. Fully controllable at a distance of 70cm when on the desktop and I must admit that it helps a lot when choosing panoramic custom resolution when gaming. Using 2xgtx970 but I also got 2xamd290 and I find them useless for the purpose.

AMD won't just die, they will be bought by another company if it gets to that. Samsung/Intel/Microsoft, or another.

AMD have been a bit strange when it comes to this resolutions for downsampling. Locking resolutions and only allowing UHD for a couple of GPU's (Fiji, Tonga) when NVIDIA supports UHD downsampling on their low-level GPU's. They added custom resolution support in the latest drivers but even that's very limited.

Buying technology shares is risky fullstop.

I suppose the one benefit of buying AMD shares is the low cost per unit. So for not a huge investment you can get quite a lot of shares.
So if you had £1000 spare (that you could risk) then as a 12m return plan could work well with Zen, AM4 APU and next holiday season GPU releases. But with AMDs track record of being late to the party and not bringing a present most should avoid.

But as has been said don't take stock advice off the internet forums.

For the record I have AMD and Nvidia GPUs and only a AMD APU and Intel CPUs.
Nate1492

I'm not sure how posting facts and figures is "clutching at straws" but if you want to just sling personal insults rather than discuss, that's your choice.

AMD has struggled despite the fact they put their GPU in PS4 and XBOX One. That happened 2+ years ago and the market has already spoken. The price of AMD has declined since that announcement.

I'm really not sure what you are trying to prove here, AMD have been a disaster financially for 3+ years. You are somehow extolling their market prowess when the numbers speak for themselves.

https://ycharts.com/companies/AMD/profit_margin

AMD have failed to turn a year long profit since 2011. In fact, they have posted a single quarter loss of nearly half a billion in each of those 4 years.

These are alarming figures. The best case scenario for anyone who currently has AMD stock is that it is purchased by some company.

There are talks that Microsoft will purchase AMD, that would help it substantially (and it would actually be amazing irony as MS has been huge Intel supporters, so maybe they will just gut the CPU side of things and focus on GPU).
Nate1492
17 Dec 15 #55
You are EXACTLY right. I meant it when I said it, do not listen to ANYONE's advice, including my own, when it comes to buying tech stocks. ESPECIALLY a risky one like AMD.
rev6
17 Dec 15 #56
The console market has small margins. Much more profit for dedicated GPU's which they're not doing too well in. They really need to put more money in GPU development, hardware and driver side of things, and get more integrated with game development, similar to what NVIDIA is doing. From a marketing standpoint, NVIDIA is killing it.
Maybe that's what they were trying to do with Mantle. So developers would go to them instead of the other way round...

One problem with what I said though. It requires money
Ferrari100
17 Dec 15 #57
MarketShare is MarketShare and AMD have nailed it in the dedicated gaming sector. Simple.
rev6
17 Dec 15 #58
They should be making more profit than NVIDIA then?
Nate1492
17 Dec 15 #59
Clearly this isn't the case as AMD aren't making a profit. Having just market share and no margins is clearly not working, nearly half a billion in annual losses this year and last year is too much of an issue.

Don't be surprised if AMD are bought out by MS, drop their CPU game entirely, or fold divisions and focus on the mobile market.
Ferrari100
17 Dec 15 #60
I'm not talking about how much money they have. I am talking about there marketshare.
You seem to believe that just because a company does not present a profit they are bad. pffft.
In any case, even if AMD only received £10 for each XBOX One and PS4 sold - grossly underestimated I am sure - that totals at least half a billion ££.
That is a good thing and will help AMD get back on track.

But my point is Sony, Microsoft, Apple and Nintendo by the looks of it would rather partner AMD regardless of AMD's finances. AMD have hardware desired by these businesses NVIDIA do not. AMD have nailed the dedicated gaming market whether you want to accept that or not.
Nate1492 to Ferrari100
17 Dec 15 #68
Actually, many reports have confirmed that NVIDIA declined to provide hardware for MS and Sony because the margins were too small.

And your proft per xbox sold could actually be too high, considering the rigs are selling for under £200 right now.

Even still, all of these profit figures are *after* we include all of that money! They are still losing money hand over fist. It is just not sustainable.
rev6
17 Dec 15 #61
Without profit how do you expect a company to last? No one is saying AMD are bad, but they're not making any money.

AMD could have the entire market but without a profit, how long do you expect them to go on?

This isn't an ethics game. Ethics doesn't make a company thrive. Ethics are for the few that believe in certain aspects but clearly there's not enough of them.

I don't do stocks. While AMD have potential to grow, I feel, whilst it's important to look at what can be made, it's just as important, if not more so, to look at the chances / amount you will lose. at this moment in time, AMD would be a huge gamble.

Nvidia woukd also be a big gamble, but have a better recent track record and healthier cashflow

AMD hold the rights for x86 license which is non transferrable if the company is taken over or went bankrupt. (VIA, and Intel of course are the other holders). Thus the reason for AMD, Samsung, Qualcomm and other CPU manufacturers (not fabrication) are utilising ARM designs in current and future designs. Although it's might be feasible due to an anti-trust and monopoly legislation that if the company was ever taken over, the license could be renegotiated but that is highly debatable and unlikely (near zero) unless major governments or EU intervene.

Unless the Zen architecture is hugely successful, and reverses the fortunes of the company it is doubtful whether AMD will have the finances or expertise to continue to compete against Intel, and Nvidia in their respective markets. They've reduced their Research and Development to half which is worrying, but with part of their restructured debt owed in 2016 and 2020 it's doubtful whether the company will sufficient finances to pay.

You know that moment when your wife loses her temper and starts bitching at someone. You think should I step in and help, but you just stand there watching to see who wins. This feels like one of those moments.

Heat for the price, but not good for 4K gaming. But them many don't need 4K gaming either.

Every single financial report shows them losing 300-500 million each year for the past 4 years.

Take a look at this last years quarters.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=AMD+Income+Statement

Net Income Applicable To Common Shares (197,000) (181,000) (180,000) (364,000)

That's the last 4 quarters. Those figures are multiplied by 1,000.

197 million, 181 million, 180 million, 364 million lost in the last 4 quarters.

$922 million dollars lost in the last 4 quarters.

That's called losing money hand over fist.

If you don't want to believe the *publicly available financial statements issued by AMD* I'm not sure what you will believe.

A bit difficult to belief, that AMD (or Nvidia) loosing billions over last few years.Selling videocards 150-300 pounds each - small GPU with screwed pipes and coollers.ANd their development - hm each next card just 5-10% better than previous --- good for long term selling strategy.I could understand if any company sudanly put on market GPU with double speed - of shure not - it's bad for business, better to make little steps 5-10%,but charge full price for it

Good price ...

1) Personally I think this is much better bangs per buck than the Nvidia.
2) I used to buy Nvidia but had a bad experience with the solder crack issue, lost one card after another and the "liefetime" guarantee's were worthless.
3) The 3.5 RAM issue on the Nvida's is annoying, not the end of the world but can affect some games (eg Shadows of Mordor). VRAM is for more than just resolution and games want more all the time but most are fine at the settings most people play today.
4) The AMD cards have a bad rep for heat / power (check your supply!) and noise vs Nvidia.
5) Powercolor has a bad rep for warranty's (first year should be return to OC) ... see the OC threads on powercolor RMA's 9its year two that's usually the issue).
6) The 390's have been in short supply to buy everywhere (at this price level).
Nate1492

Difficult or not, it's reported from AMD, as they are a publically traded company, they must divulge their finances.

Don't forget AMD do far more than just GPUs. CPU, FreeSync (not free, and certainly cost do be made), driver development, APUs... Etc.

Just because you sell something for 300 pounds doesn't mean you make 300 pounds...

But yeah, NVIDIA isn't losing money.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=NVDA+Income+Statement&annual

They are pulling in nearly 2 billion in profits per year.

There's been plenty of input, and then someone mentioned investment advice, which was completely unsound.

Would you prefer that investment advice was just left there for someone to stumble upon?

Anyway, this is the comments section, not the review section.

I think the 390 is a mediocre card that has barely advanced AMD's GPU line.

The problem is, the card it was based on -- 290 was *good*.

A few years later, the 290 is now just 'average' and the 390 is a souped up 290, so take it for what you will, if you are happy to take a card based on quite old tech (this isn't GCN 1.2, it is GCN 1.1)... Then on ya go.

I just can't recommend it. At least, not at this cost. The NVIDIA 970 is about the same price, the AMD 380x is just below it but has GCN 1.2... It's at least their latest core.

So at this price point, I just have a hard time choosing this card.

Also, as I just edited, this isn't the 290x, so that's even a bigger 'no' for me, as the 290x was the "good" card last gen.

Good choices I have the same card and it seems good to me on newest games. Would u want to sell ur dirt rally code?

Got one but no game ... OCs do not have stock of codes. Love overclockers deals and how misleading they are.
It's always nice to get what you paid for... especially around holidays.
Had a RMA with them. They said they returned a new card. It was broken and used and full of dust ... That is quite a service. Not to mention the ridiculous transport fees
