If like us you are on a tight budget and have some people you want to let know you care this Christmas, we might have a good tip for you.
We had 3 people to get for who aren't family but deserved something nice.
The problem is, we don't have much money to spare, so we thought long and hard about what to do.
What we came up with was a nice solution and wowed the recipients when they received last night.
We made up gifts bags using products from poundland and a bottle from M&S. Total cost per person - £8.50
Here is what we got;
1 X Gift bag (2 for £1) - £0.50 - poundland
1 x santa tin of cookies - £1 - poundland
1 x winter candle - £1 - poundland
1 x Baileys Chocolate Truffle Bar - £1 - poundland
1 x Box of Candy Canes - £1 - poundland
1 x Chocolate coins - £1 - poundland
1 x bottle of kir royal - £3 - M&S - half price at moment
Once all in the bag and made up, it looked good :)
update -
a few of these things were actually on 3 for 2, the baileys bar, candy canes and chocolate coins were either 2 for £1 or 3 for 2.
Actual cost was either £7.84 or £8 per bag, because I bought enough for 3 bags/gifts :)

It's not really a deal though is it? It's buying stuff from poundland and putting it in a bag, I appreciate the sentiment but a deal this is not.

I wish Christmas could return to this! I would love my family to set an absolute maximum of £5 or £10 for a present including all wrapping and the card! There could be a challenge to get the most value from that budget or simply something daft but above all some THOUGHT would go into it because of the cash ceiling.
Instead how many of us get things we don't really need and - in return - give something they don't really need because "it's Christmas" and all the rest of the marketing spiel.

We spoil our kids, but they got a lot of practical stuff that helps their lives, no apple products, new games console or laptop this year for any of them.
This was just a little something that made people smile.
My daugher just did something similar for her mates today, she made a giift bag up for a party they are having;
gift bag - 50p
santa hat with sequins - £1 - poundworld
Choc orange face mask - £1 (but on 3 for 2) - superdrug - 67p
hand cream with nail file £1 - superdrug
bath bomb - £1 - superdrug
christmas mug with teddy £1/galaxy hot choc sachet inside - poundworld (sachet was 5 for £1 so add 20p) = £1.20
cadburys snowman 25p - 4 for £1 - home bargains
nivea caramel butter lip balm - £1 - poundworld
fluffy christmas socks - £1 - poundworld
detangle comb - bobyshop - used £5 voucher for 5 - free
total cost - £7.62 per person

Ristac. Probably pointless me answering you as you appear to have stropped off. But for everyone else, no I've not read all the dozens of posts as I do have a life of sorts and time is a bit precious right now. I did however accidentally click to receive notifications. Ultimately I don't see what difference previous posts make to the fact that we are way off whether this is a deal or not and how good it is or about the availability of the contents and maybe how good or bad they are. You are now interrogating the OP about their psychologies and their intentions as to whether they were trying to big up their modest gift. As the op says, it all comes over as slightly creepy, but then on a board like this I guess you get a smattering of weirdos.

I have already answered you. It is not the case that I went to M&S to make it look better. If a wine in Tescos had been the best option, it would have went in, If Aldis had something better for same price, that would have went in. You are a very strange person. And yes, they emptied an open bag on receiving. They are adults, not children waiting for Santa!

The most popular item in the bag was the baileys chocolate bar actually! Pretty sure that Baileys is a much bigger global brand than M&S! They like the wee tins as well and asked where I got them so they can get others them for Christmas! Admittedly, the coins, candle and canes are much of a muchness, but they will be consumed/used and liked. The M&S bottle is cheaper than anything like it that I could have gotten elsewhere, and is nice! They were all getting a bottle of something, so I got the the best I could get within budget. It just so happened that it was from M&S, it could have been from anywhere. I don't know what your problem is to be honest. Creepy.
Also did not say we had very little money, said we were on a tight budget, The Government of the United Kingdom is on a tight budget, but would be foolish to say they have very little money!

Very well done sir. We try to get our kids, family and friends as many things they want, like or we think they would like as much as possible. Poundland, and many other stores are great for this. For example, we got our daughter a BB cream, a foundation cream that acts against spots for £1 and our son VO5 2 in 1 hair wash for £1. These are standard prices, not deals in Poundland, but in other stores, these things are 3 times the price! Think it is a grey area with what is deal and what is not.
bleachershane
13 Dec 152#248
Pretty wide-reaching statement. See, if you know how to shop, you know what's tacky, what's poor quality for the money, and what's a bargain.
Buy hey, knock yourself out if you think Poundland ONLY stock cheap, nasty tat. You're on the wrong website if you hold that mentality.
Oh, and you may not have explicitly mentioned 'price' in your original comment, but what you did insinuate was that love = the quality of what someone buys you. While mentioning Poundland, where most of the items cost a pound.
I've known many people that think along that train of thought and I hope you have a really happy Christmas, sitting around with your 'loved ones', all wondering how much you spent on each other, checking websites to see how much items cost and designating the cheaper items to the 'tacky' pile, and deciding who 'loves' you the most by what was bought for you. :smirk:

The issue here is the OP and several others believe this is some kind of community chat room, and seem upset that everyone doesn't agree (because it's not).
Is the OP nice for making these bags? Absolutely.
Is the OP nice for wanting to share the idea with others? Absolutely.
Does that in any way, shape or form make it a "deal"? No.
As, for some reason, your happiness seems to rely on getting heat on here and you are indeed a nice person, I'm glad it's now hot. It should however not be here at all (aside from the items themselves, bar one, being their standard prices, the concept of making a gift bag is new to no one (hence the existence of gift bags!)) so you have no right to get so stroppy with anyone questioning whether it's an appropriate deal for the site or not. Take comfort in the fact others share your view and if you can't be civil, just ignore them!

Considering the actual site acknowledges users for getting so many comments with badges, Id say this is encouraged by the creators. If that is not to your liking, tough cookie.
I am not offended by people disagreeing with me, I have had fun with most people who have disagreed and laughed out loud a lot today. I have taken exception to some stuff posted though as it shown, and do not regret that.
Finally, there is actually deals here, some stuff is 3 for 2 or 2 for 1 and the kir royal was half price, so these are deals. Getting bored reminding people that. Regardless, the opening comment on my post could not be any clearer "If like us you are on a tight budget and have some people you want to let know you care this Christmas, we might have a good tip for you."

11 pages of comments (as of this posting) about some collection of regularly priced stuff in a bag most people are barely interested in and wouldn't buy anyway... This is really not a deal and I feel would fit much better in another forum like the OP's blog/etc where they are free to ramble on about their life and overly large family (an assumption based on username) and their ways of dealing with their difficult financial situation (which they seem intent to do here at every opportunity). That way they can also avoid having to respond to all the expected criticism and negative attention, although I have to assume that was a large part of the reason for originally posting this non-deal, and why they have been actively replying all day to what would normally be a static post with a potentially money saving gift idea.

Whenever possible I try and add a personal touch to gifts and over the years I've had (imho...) good ideas that wouldn't constitute deals but would represent greater value for money. This year my main one has been taking some photos and creating a story in a photobook based on a teddy for a younger family member. Its hopefully a decent idea, will hopefully be worth more than the £10 or so I'm spending on the photobook, but it isn't a deal. I think that is analogous to this.
That said, the fact that is has got heat clearly means its been useful to some, if not to others. I don't think its helpful/sensible to either be overly aggressive in defending or denigrating a deal (of which both sides have been guilty). However, as I rarely vote cold (because I myself tend to be rubbish at finding deals), I usually try and explain why.

We found the snapfish and boots codes really good this year.
Top trick was we used a spoof jpeg image of yoda from star wars in a coffee brand logo as a photo on a cup through snapfish. It was an £8 voucher, no minimum spend, £1.99 postage. Basically for £1.99 got the mug our daugher wanted that was selling on ebay for £9.99 - £14.99
Also got loads of photos with the vouchers for the living room and we made a photo frame feature for our daughters room as a stocking filler. Cost us postage

Voted cold for 2 reasons...
1) for the rant about cold votes
2) BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A DEAL!
Im not voting Hot or Cold but the kind of person that votes cold is the kind of person that realises that this is not a deal its more of a tip and should be in the Misc part of the site.
Can you imagin if more person started posting what they have got others for presents as deals? then the site would be horrible.
Hey everyone great deal here, get an empty kelloggs cornflakes cereal box buy some sunblest (taste like chese) cornflakes place them in the kelloggs box and youve got a present that looks more expensive thn it actually is. Great if youre on a budget.

Everything that you posted in your original post says it is a quid, no mention of deals except for the bag.
If you DID intend to include the deals then you should have put £15.50 in the title since that is how much you have to spend to get the "deal".
Either way, if you are that strapped for cash here is a deal - don't buy the gifts in the first place! Those that care about you will understand and will be happier that you aren't struggling quite so much financially at Christmas, those that do get offended obviously don't care for you and aren't worth giving a gift to anyway.

Op a serious question and no offence meant by it but... Why not fill the bag with £1 items why throw in a branded M&S product? I would hazard a guess to fool the recipient into believing it all costs more than it did, they see the M&S product and assume.....
People don't want stuff from poundland or you don't want them to believe it is from there??

I chose the bottle because it is really nice, and was only £3. I chose the baileys bar on merit, it is a good bar, comes in a cardboard box. The biscuits are class, honestly, silly for £1. The candy canes are not great, and choc coins are choc coins, but the candle is fine. It is no Yankee, but it is fine. The bags also fine. I did it because I had 3 people to get and we had no budget. For £25 I got them all

2ManyKids...rather than quote the saga, id just like to quote this from your last message to me.
You said: "I referred to the fact the majority think it is hot, because you mentioned about so many colds".
My reply to that is "No. No I didn't"
It would appear that you didn't re-read or understand my comment at all. Your posts seem to be based on misquotes and pure aggression. It really does smell of "reverse trolling (playing the victim for attention)" to me. You are even managing to turn supportive people against you due to your bad attitude.

Kir royal - half price
Baileys bar - 3 for 2
Candy Canes - 3 for 2
Coins - either 3 for 2, or 2 for £1.
Those are, in your terms, deals.
In my terms, the whole package, is a good deal.
To say that people don't want stuff from poundland is ridiculous.
I just posted a post for one item from there earlier and it has 271 heat.

Cheap pointless crap in a bag. Save your money on the cheap chocolate and go and grab half price truffles (£3) from M&S, the pound land crap ruins this. The wine + truffles as a present would be nice, for £6... it's just the pound land rubbish.

I thought Christmas was about appreciation, gratitude, joy, love, delight and happiness? It's become too materialistic these days. Certainly wasn't the case 50 years ago. How times have changed!
Just be grateful this Christmas that you have a roof over your head, warm food on a plate, your health, family and some financial stability, because there are billions of people out there who haven't.

Holy Poundland Batman!
I referred to the fact the majority think it is hot, because you mentioned about so many colds.
I wasnt offended by what you wrote, and dont think you should be by what I wrote either.
The stuff is cheap, but it is not actually tat. Not the best of stuff, but that is the point, could not afford to do that!
Everyone who saw it bagged up thought it looked awesome.
Baileys chocolate is superb.
The tin of biscuits decent, and tin can be used for storage once biscuits eaten.
Candle smells nice and creates mood in house.
Bottle delicious and quality.
Chocolate coins a bit of fun, who doesn't like those?
Candy canes poor, but more for show than consumption.
Bag was not written on, so could be reused.

I'm new to this site so I couldn't say whether this is a "deal" or not. I do think it's nice to take the time out and post to give others ideas on how to give cheap gifts. However, the hostility of people on this thread is beyond ridiculous. There is no need to throw a tantrum because your Deal didn't get heat and there is no need to be nasty to people posting ideas trying to help others out. People will actually find ANY idea to be abusive to each other. It's supposed to be the festive period.

It would appear that you are quite quick to defend your post when people make ANY comment on it. You need to seriously think about what is being said before you respond. Remember you are posting on a site that is dependant on peoples opinion.

the bottle is on half price offer though, so that is what you and others refer to as a hot deal. I think the issue here is with categorisation. Is the stuff nice? Yes. Can it be classed as good value and a good deal? Yes. Is it one item rolled into one and bought as one item at till? No. The post was helpful and didnt deserve some of the stuff posted. Disagreeing is one thing, but being bitter is another. Some are quick to quote rules of the site, but conveniently ignore a few others!
julieallen to iknowwhatactualdealsare
13 Dec 151#112
So if you don't care, why the multiple posts saying what a bad deal it is? As i say, where can you buy it cheaper? Some of the stuff is 3 for 2, which isn't normal price, so thats cheaper than normal, as is the bottle from M&S. Not sure why you joined up just to have a go at this deal, have you seen some of the rubbish that gets posted on here? Loads of stuff at RRP with no thought or anything gone into it, just copying and pasting the retailers text. I would rather see posts like this than something at full price.

As nice an idea as this is (I do something similar every year) you could of got better value for money, so maybe worth keeping onto for next year? Card factory sell multiples of Xmas bags every year for £1, you can get 4 bigish bags for £1, whereas you only get two in a pound land pack. Chocolate coins are 50p in supermarkets and aldi etc. Also the last 2 years I've got small bags of biscuits from m and s for £1, last year was tree shortbread and this year I got Christmas pudding ones. I'm not slating the post btw, I just think with a little more shopping around you could do it even cheaper, so might be of help for next year?

Ive seen the bags you are talking about and they are not as nice as the metallic ones from poundland, they do get them, but they are never on shelf long.

Good grief, not sure what is going on here! OP, it's a very nice idea and I'm glad the recipients loved the time and effort that you went to to put the gift bags together. Yes, the bottle of kir royale is half price and therefore that is a deal - if you had posted just that, you'd probably have lots of votes by now! as nice as your idea is, the whole thing isn't really a deal; this would be better suited to something like moneysavingexpert.com where they have specific threads about Christmas gifting. :-) no need to take comments or voting personally, we've all had deals on here which don't always get the reaction we thought we would!
Best wishes to all and to all a good night!

Hi and thanks,
I took exception to a comment from the poster of the top comment (nice of hot deals to credit this person!), who has since deleted his comments!
He suggested that we should have stopped having kids in order to save money so we could buy people something else.
Not only was this extremely personal and offensive, but it missed the point.
This was the only thing that angered me. I have disagreed with other comments, but not been angered, although one user looks a bit convenient, but may not be.
People are entitled to say and feel what they like, until it become offensive and is regarded as offensive by the powers that be and/or if it becomes discriminatory. That is the law in UK.

Opening post
We had 3 people to get for who aren't family but deserved something nice.
The problem is, we don't have much money to spare, so we thought long and hard about what to do.
What we came up with was a nice solution and wowed the recipients when they received last night.
We made up gifts bags using products from poundland and a bottle from M&S. Total cost per person - £8.50
Here is what we got;

Instead how many of us get things we don't really need and - in return - give something they don't really need because "it's Christmas" and all the rest of the marketing spiel.
This was just a little something that made people smile.
My daugher just did something similar for her mates today, she made a giift bag up for a party they are having;
gift bag - 50p
santa hat with sequins - £1 - poundworld
Choc orange face mask - £1 (but on 3 for 2) - superdrug - 67p
hand cream with nail file £1 - superdrug
bath bomb - £1 - superdrug
christmas mug with teddy £1/galaxy hot choc sachet inside - poundworld (sachet was 5 for £1 so add 20p) = £1.20
cadburys snowman 25p - 4 for £1 - home bargains
nivea caramel butter lip balm - £1 - poundworld
fluffy christmas socks - £1 - poundworld
detangle comb - bobyshop - used £5 voucher for 5 - free
total cost - £7.62 per person
Hot from me and I hope it annoys the begrudgers
What is your actual point?
I invite you to read my question on post 163 and 165 as well as a few earlier posts from the op.
Also did not say we had very little money, said we were on a tight budget, The Government of the United Kingdom is on a tight budget, but would be foolish to say they have very little money!
:smirk:
Have you been to Poundland. Doesn't seem a classy place to me :man:.
Thanks Dad x
If you really love someone this Christmas...
Get them tat from Poundland.
Real classy OP
Classy? :smirk:
And Happy Christmas to all ( including the detractors and cynics ).<3
Voted hot
If you can't handle the heat (or lack thereof) maybe you should just get out of the kitchen...
Or in other words, this should've been posted on MSE (where most people know about shopping on the cheap, even more so than this site) or Mumsnet.
But hey, is there any point in getting het up about this? Nope. It's a post no will remember in a week's time on an internet site that's full of posts no one will remember in a week's time.
It might help someone who really doesn't have a clue about shopping on a budget, and believe it or not, this site is chock full of such people.
Tricky choice.
"I suspect the majority of people are not voting the deal hot, just the entertainment value of the posts (as you rightly state), but that is simply further proof you are not using the Deals page for the intended purpose and instead only as a pure forum (on a very active site) to further boost your account's heat rating."
I have posted 6 deals in the last 6 hours or so.
they have 340 heat, 83 heat, 408 heat, 294 heat, 297 heat and 251 heat.
This one has 340 heat, not the highest and not much more that 2 others.
Don't think the heat is coming from novelty as you infer.
Oh, and if you do honestly read what I said as sneering down on your original post, I apologise, I think it is well explained and very detailed and no doubt helpful to some people out there, it's just posted in the wrong place intentionally and I'm not alone in that belief.
how do you know what it looks like and therefore, what logo has been used if any at all?
Who is intent on sharing their ways of dealing with their difficult financial situation?
Do you mean me?
Our financial situation is not difficult, we just wanted to get something for 3 people we didn't have a budget for.
We have been replying because it is entertaining.
You come across as a complete snob. You are sneering down at me and this post, but check yourself out? Who talks like that about about a post on deals site? Oh my days
Makes no difference they aren't going to sue 1 person for 1 mug  plus its a grey area. Who really is in the wrong you or snapfish? should they print it without asking for proof of ownership?
Voted Hot.
If it was posted in the Misc section then it should be applauded infact if it was in the mic section it could become a really good thread where others post other ideas.
*facepalm*
Its like picking any 4 deals from hukd and then posting a deal saying if you put these four items in a bag it will make a great present. That also wouldn't be a deal even though it has 4 deal items included.
Anyway, go back to defending your TIAB.
Here is your answer from Wiki...
"Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law WITHOUT PERMISSION, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, SUCH AS THE RIGHT TO REPRODUCE, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works".
Nothing about selling.
I would suggest you go study it.
No?
Then you've breached Copyright law.
Simple.
A great message to teach others....
I get items from Tesco each week and put into bags - this isn't a deal anymore than this is.
The best kind of gift.
1) for the rant about cold votes
2) BECAUSE THIS IS NOT A DEAL!
http://www.marksandspencer.com/l/offers/beauty/deal-of-the-week
Can you imagin if more person started posting what they have got others for presents as deals? then the site would be horrible.
Hey everyone great deal here, get an empty kelloggs cornflakes cereal box buy some sunblest (taste like chese) cornflakes place them in the kelloggs box and youve got a present that looks more expensive thn it actually is. Great if youre on a budget.
Please stop reminding everyone that you are buying on a budget. Bruce Wayne already gives enough to charity.
People don't want stuff from poundland or you don't want them to believe it is from there??
You said: "I referred to the fact the majority think it is hot, because you mentioned about so many colds".
My reply to that is "No. No I didn't"
It would appear that you didn't re-read or understand my comment at all. Your posts seem to be based on misquotes and pure aggression. It really does smell of "reverse trolling (playing the victim for attention)" to me. You are even managing to turn supportive people against you due to your bad attitude.
Either that or you appear to be on some sort of "2ManyKids" crusade against the world.
That staement is false, 3 of the items were on offer and had you read my comments, you would know that I made up 3 bags as gifts
Look you seem ok Batguy. If I threw on a red cape and a mask, could we go beat up some trolls together?
Kir royal - half price
Baileys bar - 3 for 2
Candy Canes - 3 for 2
Coins - either 3 for 2, or 2 for £1.
Those are, in your terms, deals.
In my terms, the whole package, is a good deal.
To say that people don't want stuff from poundland is ridiculous.
I just posted a post for one item from there earlier and it has 271 heat.
This post now has 211 heat.
There is no deal to see here, just tat in a bag
Just be grateful this Christmas that you have a roof over your head, warm food on a plate, your health, family and some financial stability, because there are billions of people out there who haven't.
To the op, I think you need to take some valium to calm down. Don't take comments too seriously. Or buy some shares in Poundland, you seem to love the place.

It would appear that you are quite quick to defend your post when people make ANY comment on it. You need to seriously think about what is being said before you respond. Remember you are posting on a site that is dependant on peoples opinion.
Next time someone posts a "On a budget? Chuck a load of £1 cheap tat in a bag and call it a present" thread, Ill think twice about voting "Hot".

Whilst I appreciate the "deal" its basically saying the obvious...if you want to get a lot of gifts for little money then buy from a pound shop. The bottle aside, everything else is full current retail price. I think that's why you've had such a negative reaction from some people.
Merry Christmas, please post a similar thread for Valentines day!

Recap -
3 bags - £2
3 baileys bars - £2
3 candy canes - £3
3 Choc coins - £1.50 - £2
3 candles - £3
3 tins - £3
3 bottles kir royal - £9
total - £23.50 - £24 divided by 3 = £7.84 - £8
Plus I've learnt you can get star wars bags for life and also got a flamedeer here before it ran away so thanks op lol
I've been following this since the beginning (it has been quite entertaining in a bizarre sort of way) and am now wondering what has happened to the season of goodwill as surely it really isn't worth getting so heated over something that is so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things?
Ive seen the bags you are talking about and they are not as nice as the metallic ones from poundland, they do get them, but they are never on shelf long.
The coins were actually 2 for £1 or 3 for 2 in poundland, and I was trying to keep to one store for ease.
The tins of biscuits are danish biscuits in a relly lovely round tin with Santa on them. Well worth £1.
Unfortunately this site is what it is. In many ways the ideal of Xmas I'd lost on many here.
I suppose its more of a tip than a deal, I'll vote hot tho
