Think I can actually solve this as I have just had a conference call with the CEO of Shell.
He confessed that they have been rounding up, but not just on the 1/10th of the pence.
They have also been configuring the pump metres so that the counter counts the litre flow rate quicker than it is actually flowing.
Given that it is the season of giving, he said that they are going to reduce the price of petrol to round pence in the new year - at the expense of the oil companies.
A good result for all I think.
Hope this is the result you all wanted

lol - whilst he is draining the hose!
it does remind me of a trick I used to do at uni when I was too tight to buy lighter fluid.
Went passed the local self service asda filling station on the way home with an empty light fluid can/bottle and drain all the dregs in the hose into it - diesel, petrol, super unleaded - it all worked. After four pumps I had a full bottle! saved myself £1 :-)
Now I just pay £1 a litre - as for the 1/10th of a pence... I go into the shop with my 1/10th of a pence dollar bills yo and make it rain - dem golddiggas be falling at my feet bro - plaaaaayaaaa

Okay u cant buy 1 litre, but you can buy 11 liters on the dot if wanted? What then? Its just how can they advertise and display a price that you cant pay?
11 liters = £10.96.7 .... what happens with .7???

As I said in the answer you quoted, you cannot buy 1 litre - whether petrol or white vinegar.

I'd also like to know the answer to this, purely out of curiosity. Whilst minimum usage does apply at most petrol stations, it doesn't defeat the question. Say you buy 3 litres at 99.7p p/l, that equates to £2.991. Would I pay £2.99 and receive an extra fraction of fuel (assuming I keep the nozzle in the tank long enough and manage to drain all of the fuel out of the hose after filling up) or would i pay £3.00 and be defrauded of a large percentage of my penny?

It was 96 p in NI last week n been 99p in many garages but my last fill was 45 instead of 41 and needle went to half right after 160 miles so wont b getting cheaper ones again

The gulf garage in st blazey cornwall is 99.9 for diesel. Petrol is 102.9. Nice to see diesel cheaper.

Noticed the Diesel in Chaddesley Corbett ( between Bromsgrove and Kidderminster ) was 99.7 pence yesterday, but petrol was 103.7. So diesel hunters in Worcestershire a bargain for you.

Come on the price of fuel is still way too high thanks to this government, the price should have been down to at least 60p per litre by now. People unit and fight.
