cyuk2 - "This is superb for walking, especially with the free, downloadable map content for offline use on the hills.
Good level of detail too for smaller tracks. You can also load gpx files etc to follow other people's routes."
umataro - "Nokia HERE is excellent but does not currently (at least on android) offer lane guidance. This does.
Waze is online only, OsmAnd can download maps for offline use.
OsmAnd+ works (or worked when I used it) with crowdsourced maps from OpenStreetMaps project and (if you pay extra) with maps from TomTom. When I travelled around the world, I managed to get to areas that NO commercial mapmakers mapped. Literally nobody. Not Google, not Navteq, not Tele Atlas, nobody. Only OpenStreetMaps. So my suggestion is, get this if you want to do a bit of offroading, travel to exotic countries, drive through the countryside, etc."

The footpaths are just marked on the OSM maps. You perhaps need to read the map legend, it's in the help menu.

So far, not keen on Osmand, cant seem to find a freeform search like Here does.
On the other hand, Osmand can be set far chattier, repeat instructions at intervals, report POI on route... I must go and edit at openstreemap, as one of the POI was in totally the wrong place - but that's a risk with crowdsourced mapping, and maybe one reason to prefer Here which has it's own map data.... All the openstreetmap based freebies are dependent on the quality of that database - I've also spotted missing one way and no turn restrictions.

Just to clarify, that is the permissions for Waze. Waze is owned by Google, so they probably have access to most of that already anway...
OsmAnd+ does not need most of those permissions.

Yeah. I've used OpenStreetMap via OSMAnd extensively in Cono Sur (plus bits of Brazil) and it didn't let me down. Obviously I didn't rely on it alone when hiking way off the beaten track up in the mountains, but in towns, small villages etc, I was always impressed by the currency and detail of the mapping (and this is my professional field!). Evidence of the power of crowdsourcing

Lane guidance? I might give this a go for 10p - currently on Here (and rescued the TTS voices from my previous phone).
Not sure if the "hifi" TTS voices are still missing from Here (couldn't find them to download on my new phone) as without them, you do not get road names!
NB. It appears that this is simply a "donation" version of the free one, no additional capabilities.
PS. I have an archive of both UK Hifi voices for Here.

I bought this as I had used the free version before when walking and found it very useful. I just looked at our town and the map shows the roads on the new estate near us - and it hasn't even been built yet! That's pretty impressive updating.

For cycling get this and b-router (free!). It takes height into account for cycling routes.
Other stuff - You can
* set it to automatically record a gpx log when you start following your route.
* follow routes in gpx files (it'll give you turn by turn directions).
* share your location with other users on the map
* overlay POIs on the map - so you can, say, overlay all the cash machines.
* list POIs by nearest, and if the information's in OSM show if the thing (say a cafe) is open now.
* show ski maps
Searching is a bit crap.

I use OSM data for cycling and walking and find it to be mostly excellent. I occasionally drop into Google or sat data when planning where OSM can't manage (and vice versa). On the road with route planned it's OSM data on the Garmin (bike) or in Viewranger (walking) on the phone. For quick lookups Google usually does the job.

I usually use Here maps and sometimes. Google but help. With the lanes is handy. For 10p this is definitely worth a shot.

I tried Nokia HERE (for Android) about a year when visiting Brazil. The wretched thing had me driving around aimlessly in Rio de Janeiro for quite a while (for some reason the GPS location wasn't correctly synced with the map, so it was showing me on a road that wasn't the one I was actually on) before I found somewhere that looked safe to stop and switch to my backup app (Navmii, also free) which fortunately worked fine. It will take quite a lot to convince me to try HERE again, while I've been using Navmii ever since and it's been great.
Not tried this one but certainly looks worth a look.

I'd be interested to see a comparison in mapping quality between the OpenStreetMap data that this app uses, Here maps and Google maps. Particularly as far as cycling and walking routes is concerned. I guess they are all pretty good for driving routes.
I like that they include over-speed limit advice, I wish google maps did that, it's the main reason I choose to use Here maps.
Here maps not part of Nokia anymore, now owned by the German car makers.
