Was browsing for a car rental and found this on the Europcar site. May be helpful for someone traveling from select locations in UK

Had a bad experience with Europcar as well. They were incorrectly issued with a PCN for a toll crossing. I got the PCN cancelled, but they still refused to give me my money back. My credit card company at the time (Santander) sided with Europcar! Shortly after, I closed all of my families accounts with Santander because of this. They lost around a constant £12000 credit balance, the 123 credit card, my children's savings accounts and both mine and my wife's 123 current accounts over this. The good news, Nationwide gave us 5% interest rate on our current accounts, plus £100 for moving to them, plus I recommended my wife which netted both of us another £100 each.

last good deal I got with Europcar was offset by them ripping me off £900 for some imaginary damage, fake refuelling charges and some rather creative taxes. avoid like the plague. they make sure they get their money despite the headline prices. especially in spain :disappointed:

Just make sure to use a separate car hire excess company like Questor. Really great cover at very low prices. Take the annual policy if you will use car hire more than once. No need to make the likes of Enterprise rich with their own expensive excess cover and too risky when these companies can throw on an excess of thousands of pounds for a scratch.

Having renting many cars in Spain you need to ask for the insurance where "if I drive off a cliff I pay no excess". It's not the cheapest but I've never paid a penny and when you return it they don't even bother looking at the car.

We've only ever had positive experiences and have used them many times but in the UK only.

Wouldn't touch Europcar with a 'stolen' one. Rip off merchants and their idea of a Golf equivalent is a Hyundai i20. It sounds tempting but as per above they will add stuff in to get their money back.

I concur. I have insurance4carhire myself for 39 per year which includes car club and you can claim up to 4 times a year. I made a scratch on the alloy once when I was hiring from Thrifty, got charged 118 pounds for it including admin cost. Submitted the claim and got them all back within a month.

I had a car hire excess policy, think it was worldwideinsure or similar. I was shocked to discover during the claims process that they only pay out if they see a copy of the invoice for damage from the repairing garage to the car hire company. This may be OK if you have a genuine accident and somehow you can obtain the right paperwork from the car hire company even though you have likely gone home to a different country.
However, if the car hire company are ripping you off for a small mark that they are never going to get repaired then it is impossible to produce paperwork for the repair and the car hire excess company washes its hands. I can not believe this issue doesn't get more publicity. I used to feel nice and smug having my cheap excess reimbursement policy but when I needed it it was as much use as a chocolate bog roll.

I always use my local europcar in Norwich I ask them to give me a car that has a few knocks I don't want brand new because all I do is panic where ever I park it

This could be a great way of saving money if your needs match one of the available routes. Not sure when added but when I check there are a huge number of routes now available from London and Airports after Xmas.

I had a bad experience with Eurocar . Hire car didn't turn up then lady put phone down when I called. Would not recommend them now and I was customer for ages. Still waiting on outcome to my complaint.

Another bad experience with Europacar, hired a van and returned it with a full tank but there was no one at their office so I had to post the keys into a box. Next thing I know I am being billed for a full tank of fuel at twice the petrol price. I have no way to prove it since no one was at their office which also meant they could make up any scratches or dents etc. Scammed me for a total of £170 (and I think I got away easy compared to some).

Not sure why you opted to bump this month+ old deal, but anyway....
If, as you claim, you returned the vehicle full of fuel, then you must have filled up very close to the return point probably just before you returned the vehicle. Presumably you have a receipt to prove that?
Returning a vehicle when there is no one around to accept it is always a danger - it doesn't matter what rental company you use.
However, the rental company presumably have a receipt showing the fuel they say they purchased (may not be £170 worth as that will include the prise of someone having to fill the vehicle as well - but probably about £85 worth of fuel)
Similary, if they any rental company were to charge you for repairs, then they would have to produce receipts for that too if asked.

We got a letter from their insurance to cover damages from 'missing fuel cap'. When asked for proof, the guy sent a picture of it in his hand. Bunch of muppets

The credit card company are helpful if there are unauthorized transactions or there is a clear breach of contract by the other party.
In the car hire scenario, you have pre-authorised use of the card in the event of some damage being caused. If the car is damaged and the credit card gets charged, it is hard to prove any actual breach of contract and the credit card companies aren't so keen to get involved.
