Good deal, obviously ideally you would have a PC to gamestream from but even without this its still a pretty solid entertainment system (running android so Kodi is an option) and powerful gaming device with a good few AAAA standard android games and the monthly game streaming service Nvidia now

http://shield.nvidia.com/game-streaming-with-geforce-now

If you're not bothered about playing multiplayer that much, or play the latest games immediately (and considering you have to pay monthly subscriptions for PS/Xbox anyway) its quite a good option for some light gaming now and then if you have Fibre Optic

Terrible Shield tablet is a bit extreme, the first iteration was one of the best rated tablets released - blighted by manufacturing issues it appears. The revised model again also top rated.
Aeschylus
25 Nov 15 #38
The problem with Nvidia is they try to over power everything, sell to their core audience, then fire sale the stock, and it stinks

the first Shield was dropped almost as soon as it launched, then the first shield tablet, which was horrendous and recalled and massively overpowered where they have to release their own game re-written for it..

The we have this, the shield TV, clearly not sold well, it was £199 + £40 for TV remote....sold to their core audience, then BAM...fire sale price to be £120 tomorrow inc the expensive TV remote, that is over a £100 reduction in the first 6 months FFS! what does that say to those first purchasers

Now we have this new shield tablet, again over powered, joe bloggs wont want it, it is clear people want battery life and good all round performance over these over powered tablets....

I am moaning I know, and generally I like Nvidia, but they seem to want to play this game where they go "oohhhh look at how powerful this is" their core fan base buy it, then boom, drop support fire sale the stock

Aeschylus to yorkie
25 Nov 15 1 #49
yes and no, you can use their Game stream service £8 a month I believe, but it does not have every game, and new-ish games are very expensive £50 plus the monthly fee..

TBH I have never really read anything that positive about their game streaming service and you would need to be on fibre as well, they do offer a free trial though on it

http://shield.nvidia.co.uk/games/geforce-now
baseley09 to yorkie
25 Nov 15 1 #50
Unfortunately not - this tablet runs on Android so natively it runs Android software/games. It can run PC games but streamed over the internet via the paid for Geforce NOW service, Skyrim isnt on that service tho.

Or if you have an existing gaming PC you can play your pc games on it but streamed locally in your house.

I don't disagree its a good price for a power android tablet, but all that power comes at a price.

I owned a shield tablet and it was one of the most un reliable tablets ive ever owned, even after keeping it in a case, the thing still fell apart.

Thankfully nvidia recalled it due to the battery and gave me a new one ( which I sold )

If you buy an nvidia device then ask yourself:

- am I happy to take the risk
- if I take the risk am I tech savvy enough to mess around with wifi, tablet advanced setttings
- Nvidia promise features / games and never delivery
- some people still do not have their replacement tablet after 4 months

there are lots who report they are happy with their shield devices, but lots who were also very un happy and would regularly go on the forums to bash nvidia and the moderators.

also dont be taken in when a mod on the forum says hes going to get something looked into for you or fixed...........they tend to post that they will fix it but then never get back to you

Note, the Fire TV (haven't tested the newest one) doesn't allow 1080p streaming with Moonlight. It only really handles 720p. The Steam Link does 1080p at 60fps perfectly, network permitting.

The Nvidia Gameshield doesn't seem to work with Amazon Prime Video - if it does, it's glitchy.

The Steam Link will have the best software support because Valve are involved.

Either way you'll end up making some sacrifices.

Heat added.

It would be to play Android games and read books, watch TV on. Nothing else really.

I might stream a game to it from my PC occasionally but I don't have much need to do that sort of thing tbh. I have a Fire TV at the moment but I just use it to watch TV (Netflix, Amazon Video, Kodi) and not for games. I tend to game either on my consoles or sat at my PC.
TwentyTwo
25 Nov 15 #86
I see people mention Moonlight, it is a great alternative but here is the problem, not very many android devices on the market can stream at 1080p/60fps, you are extremely limited in the choices you have to do this.

If you also want to stream wirelessly you will need the box to support 5ghz - homeplugs are out of the question as it introduces latency and is much worse that even a poor wifi connection.

Considering Steam boxes are around £50, yet can't do half the great things this device does it really makes little sense to get anything else. I can stream wirelessly 1080p/60fps, I can also hold down a button and get mouse/keyboard emulation in the event I need it - this alone makes it worth the price.

It's expensive, definitly for a niche audiance, but it is a quality, quality piece of hardware.
bisoner to TwentyTwo
25 Nov 15 #97
My experience is that even 5ghz wireless doesn't cut it for home streaming. I found the 500Mbps Powerline adapters were flakey but the 1200 adapters work well.

I like the idea of mouse emulation. I prefer native steam streaming rather than using it via moonlight.

there's plenty of cheap half decent tablets however if you want something half decent at gaming what options do you have? niche things with little market can rely on customers willing to pay a bit more, same with their GPU's and titan with the 980ti releasing so soon after. What we need is a half decent AMD based tablet to encourage more competitive pricing a monopoly only suits the producers
Aeschylus
25 Nov 15 1 #89
Indeed, there is a good thread about this on Neogaf, basically because AMD are such rubbish competition to Intel, people with PC's can still use the Intel 2500K chip many years after it's release to play the latest games...Same with Nvidia, they need more competition

Edit: I'd also like to point out that for people who are on the fence about emulation that this is the only android device (including the latest phones like the S6) which can do the xBR filter for emulation.

As far as I know, Fire TV 4K does not decode natively DTS, nor srt subtitles. If you plan to have a system where you do the video decoding on the client side (which I believe would include Kodi, but would exclude Plex which transcodes on the server end), then this makes the Fire TV pretty useless for a large chunk of MKV files which have DTS audio. By contrast, the Nvidia Shield TV decodes all those formats natively and should be far superior for a Kodi setup I would have thought.

I previously swore by Powerlines but my experience is that after a year or so of intensive use, they burn out and need replacing (a problem widely reported by others online). I now bought a top notch Wifi AC router and streaming high def 1080p MKVs from my NAS to my IPad Air 1 (which isn't even Wifi AC) on nplayer is an absolute breeze and blazing fast.

25 Nov 15 #142
I already have one ordered from Amazon, hopefully they will price match it there and I can ask for a refund of the difference

I have done a bit of research on this and looking through some comments on here, I would just like to clarify some points:-

1) I know from personal experience and logic that unless you have a crappy router there should be no problem streaming content even over the 2.4Ghz band at upto 300Mit/s, for instance a 20GB 2 hour long blu-ray rip would only be hitting approx 20Mit/s, so it can more than handle the throughput. If it's not able to handle it then there's something at your router that's the problem. I suffered with stuff like this for about 2 years, tearing my hair out trying to figure out where the problem was and tried everything I could think of... I purchased a new router, a decent one and didn't have to configure anything but a relatively free band as usual, my streams work perfectly now even streaming a long way and through walls with no halting or buffering etc even on 2.4Ghz band to mobile phones, tablets etc.

2) There is apparently (can't try this until tomorrow or friday when the shiled tv arrives) a simpler way of loading apps onto the shield tv even if they don't show in the android tv store. Go onto PC and search for the apps and then choose which device you want to install to. I do this already with my android devices anyway, but have no way of checking the validity of this way as yet. Will save having to sideload some apps maybe.

I hope this has been of help to someone, and if I find any more tips I will share them

it's not better than netflix. I wouldn't even compare it to netflix. Netflix plays the videos it has on offer, and it does it very well. kodi can play videos, music, photos, programs etc. It's not a dedicated VOD service. It's possible to get decent quality movies and tv shows on there, and you can get pretty much anything. But for quality audio and visual, netflix wins hands down. And don't give me this about "oh but on navi x you can get 5.1 1080p streams...", they hardly ever work and are mostly cack.

If you just want something for Kodi/streaming then absolutely a firestick does a great job, hard to beat for value

If want something powerful enough for emulation/android games etc then it's arguably the best option out there. My main gripe with it, is (local) PC game streaming requires you have a nvidia card in your PC, if it could work like a steam link it would be perfect.

Having bought the Shield tablet last year I was wondering if there would be another Nvidia deal, I read the article too but didn't post because
1. Deal wasn't live or confirmed by other sources
2. Deal did appear to be available in the US so wondered if TrustedReviews had made an assumption

Seems like a nice package, the remote has been bundled for early adopters but price drop and inclusion of controller makes it a good deal. Some reviews do slate it saying it just lacks TV orientated software.

Yes if you want to game on your TV buy this, to be honest though no one does.

If you want Kodi buy a cheaper box, like an Amazon Fire TV/Stick/Pi2/one of those hundreds of cheap android boxes.

If you want iPlayer and all those also buy a cheaper box, like an Amazon Fire TV/one of those hundreds of cheap android boxes.

This is overkill and too expensive for what it is.

GNKelly07
26 Nov 15 #222
You've certainly got a point that this is a premium product with an appropriate price and that it's probably overkill merely for Kodi. However, once you use one of these and then use a Fire Stick (I still have one in the kitchen) it feels painfully sluggish.
Don't really understand the 'no-one wants to game on TV' comment - what about the millions of games consoles sold.
Some people just want to buy the best, and this is probably the best android box out there .
fatbrummie
26 Nov 15 #223
I have tried most of the top Android boxes for Kodi and this beats them all by a mile.Everyone raves about the Fire stick but their ok if you know how to sideload apps ect and have a decent net speed. There is no option to attatch a pendrive/usb as well which is no good. The Shield flys like a Lambo and leaves the rest of the boxes behind..Well worth the money unless you like slow speeds...

The Amazon Fire TV has sd card support and you can just send files to it from your PC, who needs more than that. It also has great developer support, and supports 4K. Better than moving a physical object around by putting it in your PC copying the file then going to the box and putting it in, after you put it in the wrong way first (that's what she said). Then after finishing watching the said porn taking out the USB device and putting it in a drawer, never to find it again. Your wife finds it one day and starts asking questions. You wouldn't want that to happen would you.

I wish I hadn't bought mine earlier now I have seen this deal, but that's what happens when you buy tech on launch day!

I absolutely love mine and my main use (until I hurry up and buy a GTX compatible card) is for video streaming using Plex, Kodi, Netflix, WWE etc and compared to the cheaper devices (Fire TV stick etc) it does feel a lot better.

Using it for emulation is great and the Nvidia streaming service is surprisingly good (I have the 152MB Virgin Media connection).

The controller could be better, but I don't game heavily on this device.

It may be a little overkill for my current uses, but it should only get better and I can't recommend this device enough.

Everything for Plex can be found on Plex.tv and they have some really helpful people on the forums. It's very simple once you've got it up and running.

I used YouTube to help with emulation, so just search for something basic like "emulation on nvidia shield tv" and you should be spot on.
ST3123
26 Nov 15 #250
Really tempting at £120. The thing is I think I would struggle to make best use of it and could imagine it getting very little use at all as I already have alternative devices for everything this does. I have consoles and a HTPC for big screen gaming, tablets for touch screen gaming. Consoles, tablets and my Now TV and Chromecast 2 (if Wuaki makes good) can more than handle my entertainment needs. My PC has an AMD GPU so I can't game stream and I don't have a 4K TV to take advantage of one of it's main features, the 4K support.

All that aside, it is a lovely tempting piece of kit and if it went down to £100 I still think I would bite and to hell with the practicalities, though I doubt we will see £100 this year unless amazon pulls something REALLY special out of the hat.

Before this goes live, want to clear this up

If I add the net cable from the router (BTInfinty 70MB+) to this, which also has my HP Micro hooked on as well as the main PC. Will the Shield pickup all the drives via the router?

I am guess this is how the Shield picks up stored movie/tv files, is this correct?

The same goes to the emu games - if you have the emus on the shield to access the games - will you then make a games folder for the roms on your PC or have I got this all wrong!
benfisher1991 to godzillafan
26 Nov 15 #255
You'll need a 3rd party app to access the drives.

For example I use Kodi which can see SMB drives on my NAS and PC. You could use ES Media to view them. I doubt an EMU would allow viewing of remote files but they're pretty small anyways/
paddy.stone to godzillafan
26 Nov 15 #391
If for example you're using Kodi, you can add resource in the video/music/pictures folders for the appropriate share on your NAS, I use SMB shares on my NAS personally as I don't like DLNA sharing as I prefer having passwords for the shares as many people in the household, so better IMO to give people access to only places and files you want them to . If you're wanting to move/edit/copy/delete files on your NAS or play them with apps like VLC, then personally I use ES file explorer or similar. It's just the same as on any other Android device basically, except this box will do it all very easily and smoothly.

To be fair, the Minix has plenty of power for what it does, it has hardware support for Dolby and 4K and it has an established support network that the Nvidia does not (which for me is key as everyone is whacking the latest and greatest hardware into the devices but few have the support when it doesn't work well). Minix is still the best device for me (and for most others). Maybe when the shield has decent software support and doesn't need everything useful to be sideloaded....maybe then I'll consider it, but I suspect they are going down the restrictive Apple TV route which generally is not what people want.

I agree. This is a gamer's device and a hardcore gamer's device at that. If all you want is streaming TV then an Amazon Fire TV should be fine.

I am someone with very little patience for poor performing devices but I use the Fire TV for Netflix, Kodi, Amazon Video, iPlayer etc and it's near perfect.

At near the same price it's night and day difference between the two, it's not even a contest as this monster can run Super Mario Brothers Wii at full speed. It will take years for any rockchip/amlogic to get within touching distance.

If you search XDA you can find how to root and flash full android if you don't want to use official firmware. Devices like the one you mentioned make this look positively cheap.

From someone who has used all chinese rockchip/amlogic soc's avaiable, I cannot stress just how much better it is in every aspect, from build quality, wifi, and the sheer speed of it. However as mentioned if you need just a Kodi box it's OTT although this is one of the few boxes that does have offical Kodi builds specifically for it.

I guess, that answers it. Usually its a rom file I would find and play via the emu. So have the roms stored on the main PC in a folder and if you want to play the Dreamcast game or whatever - just transfer the game file over and run via the shield.

Like the sound of the shield more and more now that it will play the games. The plex is a bonus, just throw all the movie files onto the 5TB and good to go.

Well in that price range it's 970 v 390 and the 390 is cheaper and beats the 970 in fps by around 5% it may use a bit more power but that works out at about 11p per 25 hours gameplay. Also the 390 has full DirectX 12 support and has 8gb VRAM which makes it far more future proof. So the only advantages the 970 has is shadowplay and MXAA which are both excellent but don't compete with the advantages of the 390 for me.

the big big drawback however is you can't watch Amazon Prime content on it.. but you gain full access to Google Play for Android TV and game streaming

Is Google still backing Android TV or is it already abandon-ware? I keep hearing how small the app/game choice is for the Android TV platform. I would use it mainly for Netflix/iplayer/kodi and a few games like Minecraft. Would I be better off going for an Intel NUC or something that's more versatile? I know a NUC would be more expensive but I don't want to be stuck with something that Google is going to consign to the scrap heap along with Google TV.

No worries, but Android isn't great for working with NAS for moving files between the NAS's own disks, it's complicated. If you just want to delete/copy some stuff it's not too bad as the controls are there, but for moving files it's way too complicated to even explain why, lol. If you plan on moving a lot of files on your NAS, I would suggest using a computer or SSH into your NAS to do it as it's much faster and simpler than trying to use android. You can do it, but the ease of use just isn't there for moving files through a shared network device.

Had my micro n36l setup with win7 and the pci graphics card for easy basic setup access. Mainly used by the kids to watch their TV shows on the big tv. The 3rd drive is the 5tb, plan was to move all the avi/movie etc., files into the 5tb in folders. Hopefully going down the plex route. Will make a games folder on that too!

I guess once the router links the shield and pc together and will be able to move things much easier.

I ordered at 2.50am and at the time the Shield appeared as 'backlogged' while the remote was 'in stock'. The dispatch date was stated as 30th December 2015 just below the add to basket button.

However, now when I check it's coming up as in-stock. I'm confused as to whether mines will be shipped before the 30th Dec or not. Sent an email to customer service to cancel my order if it's going to be shipped on the 30th Dec or later. Will update here.

Not quite sure what you mean re honouring it? Why what reason would they have? They would be breaking the law and trades description act or the equivelent for Germany.
They have already brought forward the date of arrival for the remote to the 3rd December. If you buy something and they take payment they have "honoured your purchase".

I think it depends any terms and conditions of sale. As I understand it, If it doesn't say they are allowed to cancel an order, then when they take the money it means the contract has been made and they are obliged to supply the goods at the price set, and if they then change their mind they are breaking the contract and therefore you can sue for damages and costs to be put into the position you would have been in had they not broken it.
Hustler1337
27 Nov 15 1 #500
It's not unusual for orders on mispriced items to be cancelled as you'll have seen many times on HUKD. Usually retailers have a provision in their terms that they've not accepted an order until the item has been dispatched or something to that effect. The payment is usually kept on hold and taken at the point of dispatch. Not saying that yours will be cancelled, but was only answering your original question why people might not have been cancelling their Lightning order for the the amazon.de one.

Actually forget what I said before, ES file explorer is actually pretty good at using network devices and moving etc now.. I think it must have been an old version where it was difficult maybe. But anyway, I tested it and moving files is easy enough now, just select the files you want to move (press and hold first file for it to go into checkbox mode) then select the other files you want to move to the same destination, then click the icon at the bottom/top (depends on which version of android you're using) that looks like 3 dots in a vertical line, this gives you more options of what to do with the files. Then click "move to", it will bring up a box for you to select the destination... if you want to move to a network location, click on the left arrow (top left) and it will go to the root directory, and there you can select your network location and destination folder.
Sounds way more complicated than it is in practice believe me.. anyway, hope that helps

I got the quote from Flubit as well, for same 9% off Ebuyer price. My demand clearly states the free remote but the offer clearly doesn't. According to their T&C, it's the wording in the offer that they go by so I don't think the remote is included in the offer. Worth getting it in writing off them to give yourself some back up but it was the reason why I didn't accept their offer. Hope you get it!

On their site it says cancellations are possible for items on back order so they should do if they haven't dispatched it.

27 Nov 15 #524
I purchased it on my credit card and it hasn't yet appeared as a transaction. Customer services told me it hadn't been dispatched but couldn't say when it would. So it could be tomorrow or in a month, which is ridiculous. I told him I would buy it elsewhere and to cancel the order. He put in a cancellation request whilst I was on the phone. He told me if it turns up, then to refuse the delivery and I would automatically be refunded.

27 Nov 15 #525
Got mine today from Amazon (ordered it before any deals had shown up), noticed they had dropped the price so rang them and asked for the difference to be refunded and they did, plus got the delivery refunded too - so all-in I got the shield TV/controller/remote for £115.25 delivered in 2 days

I'm pretty happy with it, nice and fast operation through the menus and apps. Kodi works almost flawlessly although I did notice at first a little problem with audio sync (can be corrected in kodi anyway), but tried it again later and audio was fine again. In case anyone else is wondering, if you do have problems with video playback the best method across pretty much any android device I have found is to use ES file manager and browse to the file you want to play and choose VLC as the video app to play it with... reason I am saying this is I have had issues with some things not playing correctly in kodi before, yet they played fine with VLC.
I'm a little under-whelmed at the choice of apps/games in android at the moment, but hope the list will get better. In the meantime I am going to side-load some and see how I get on and also make use of the 3 month free NVIDIA pass. Also will be trying some emulators for the NES etc and get some old-skool gaming going

Anyone started an owners thread for this yet? Would be cool to have a separate thread for tips/tricks etc and discussion about what emulators work best so that everyone doesn't have to go through trial and error with everything

Sorry if this has been mentioned but there are so many pages!
Will Gamestream work ok with AV200 Powerline Adapters? I know they're only 10/100 ethernet ports but they work fine in my current setup for streaming HD video from my PC to my TV.
I currently have a number of these dotted around the house and they work flawlessly so very little electrical interference.
Is there any real need to go and get a whole set of AV500 or Gigabit adapters?

There are some limitations to Android TV at the moment (not Nvidia's fault) in that the version of the Playstore it uses may well not show various games you have purchased on other devices. I couldn't play my GTA games at first.
Some people have mentioned side loading and some may have said this on another page but there is an easier solution.

Open the Playstore using chrome browser on your computer for example, then click on the game you want and there should be a drop down box showing a list of devices to send the game to download to. From here you can select your Shield TV and it will automatically download the next time you use it.

Thanks, great tip, I was concerned about the fact that I have heard Android TV has a very limited library.

Also is it true you can't play any games that use touch either? I know a TV has no touch screen, but would it really have been that hard to, in touch games, use the left stick as a virtual pointer (finger)? or even better let you connect up a mouse and do it PC style?, seems a really lousy solution to just forbid everything touch based, which is a lot of the Android library, when the touch input could easily be emulated as I mentioned....

Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday morning. Absolutely loving it so far; massive step up from the fire stick and some superb features!! Kodi works well and managed to get the fire stick remote working as well as a Logitech Harmony via ir. The headphone socket on the supplied remote was a very pleasant surprise; not fantastic sound quality but more than adequate for tv programmes.

I've installed Dolphin as a browser but it's tough to use as i can't see a mouse pointer. Currently using a Android TV Remote on the phone with its trackpad to try and simulate a mouse. Apparently they removed the cursor/pointer after update 1.1 for some reason. Anyone have a workaround for this?

Issues already

1. If I have the hdmi on 60hz it will work via TV hdmi connection, but not via my receiver hdmi - no picture comes up.
So I need to select 50hz hdmi it will show via the receiver. The shield TV hookup is no good for me as the sound goes via the receiver.

2. where are all the drives and computers? I have the network cable going in the shield via the router which is hooked up to 2 PCs, but how do you see all the drives from the shield. I have loaded ES file manger on the shield.

my main computer sees the shield over the network as other devices.

So how do you see/move files from computer hdds?
GNKelly07 to godzillafan

2. In ES File, go to LAN and add the IP addresses of the computers you wish to access
paddy.stone to godzillafan
28 Nov 15 #567
Don't know about #1, never heard of that problem before, but suspect it might be down to the HDMI cables maybe... did you use the supplied cable from nvidia to hook up the shield to the amp? and might want to try swapping the HDMI lead that goes to the TV and see if it works in 60Hz then. No trouble here with shield in 60Hz.

#2. In ES file explorer, on the left (top I think) there are 3 horizontal lines that toggle quick menu (not sure if that's the word?) anyway, what it does is list your local drives and others you may want to view. Go down until you reach the LAN one, and click it. Click "search" at the bottom of main screen. It will show LAN drives including other PCs hopefully... on mine I had to enter it manually by clicking "new" then entering the IP address of the NAS/PC and giving it a name and entering the username and password for that share.
godzillafan
28 Nov 15 #568
Thanks guys

1. i used the supplied cable and at the moment its only allowing 50hz to work. will try the cable I was using before I hooked up the shield.
2. I found ips via the net and also got my IP4 addresses. Will try the ips first - The names and usernames etc - do I make them up? I first just put the IP address in first and clicked ok and it asked for a name.

Kodi has been put on via play - Just need the right build now that mainly has rom games on it. So many builds I need to figure out which one has game roms section on it. So far, they all state they are the best!

update on Lan

So which IP do you add, the IP4 or the IP which I looked up on the net (myIP)?
Then
Do you need to put anything in the domain box? Also the username and password? Is that something new I create?

I tried without any names and error message on IPs entered
Made up some names and password and same again error

So I am guessing I need to add something for each box
paddy.stone
28 Nov 15 #572
No, I mean try a different cable from the amp to the tv, we know the one that came with the shield works for 60Hz as you said that the shield works in 60Hz if hooked directly to tv... hope that makes sense?

I'm sorry but I don't know what you mean by "found ips via the net"? but no, you do not make the usernames and passwords up... these have to be usernames and passwords for the devices you are trying to access eg, the NAS box password for either admin user or for another user that you set up previously. For instance, my NAS has 3 users that all have their own usernames and passwords, those people have different permissions to access shares on my NAS, some have read/write access and some have read only, and some have no access to certain shares. Enter the username and password for the user level you want the shield to have. I can't imagine that you don't have it set like that, but just in case, you can always try setting it up with the "anonymous login" box checked when you set up in ES file explorer, it doesn't work for me as I want it to block anonymous logins to my NAS for obvious reasons
godzillafan to paddy.stone
28 Nov 15 #573
Cheers P

Heres the update

The cable I tried 2, original shield cable 60hz works on TV, but only on 50Hz via my receiver (Pioneer VSX521) works. The cable I had on before (taken from bluray), same as above. Reciever will not beam a 60Hz picture - I just get a no signal bar. Can't figure out whats happening there.

I used IP4 address 192.168. blad blah blah, I had 2 one from main PC and one from the HP N36L (not server, win7 loaded).

Passwords - hell I have no clue. The PC and HP are setup on a home network and I just transfer files between the 2 rooms. So how do you setup a password? Unless you mean the log in when the PCs boot up?

Has anyone who ordered from the official NVIDIA Store received their order or received an email stating that their order has been processed for shipping?

Other than an initial order confirmation I have not heard anything from NVIDIA. An email to customer support seems like they have no idea what they are doing. They've cancelled my order despite me stating that I wish to cancel ONLY if my order is going to be dispatched on or after the 30th December and asking for an estimated shipping timescale. Seems like they just ignored my email and went ahead and cancelled it.

So basically, I've been told to wait for this shipping notification email which could be sent out next year for all I know. They can't even provide me with a definite answer whether my order has been sent for dispatch or not and when I should roughly have it dispatched. Should have ordered from Amazon when I had the chance.

Anyone have any suggestions for good killer app style games to show off what this system is capable of? Are any of the ones that are on offer like Doom 3, Half Life 2 etc worth getting or are they better in their original PC incarnations? Does the shield tv have any good exclusive titles?

I know it's library isn't that mature or large yet (and may never be) but one really solid title to give it a good workout on would be really great....

Thanks for the reply. As long as everything works on the controller it's fine. I have mine arriving soon.
paddy.stone
28 Nov 15 #581
OK, glad you got the PCs IP addresses added.. now if you click those icons of the PC's in ES file explorer where you added them under LAN it should be showing the drives. If it's not then it could be down to file sharing permissions on the PC's you're trying to connect to. So, when you set up your PC's to file share between them before, what did you do? I only ask because that's pretty much going to give us a clue as to what's going on here. I thought you had a NAS box, which might be where all this confusion is coming from.
paddy.stone
28 Nov 15 #582
OK, something else I didn't think to mention. Because it's PC sharing you will only have access to the public folders by default, and also may not got access anyway if using an anonymous login. The login should be (if accessing a PC) a proper username and password of the computer you are connecting to.
For instance, say on my PC I have a user called Dobby, that username and password can be used to connect to my PC remotely. So that's the username and password to enter into ES file explorer on the shield device. Also, your shares may not show up, so in a file explorer window on your PC, go to the drive/folder that you want to share and right click, Go down the menu to "share with" and then click on "advanced sharing", a new window will pop up. Click the "sharing" tab, and then click the button named "advanced sharing", click the checkbox that says "share this folder/drive" and then either change the permissions for what this user can do , or just hit "apply" - if you don't change the permissions I think they only have read access by default.

Hi Guys

Just watched the rerun of the fight and great to see a Brit heavy win!

Anyway, thanks for all the help as always and the pointers which helped cleared up things.

I read all the numbers and letters all wrong.

IP - I used the IP4 number from cmd promt from both computers in the end, they worked.
PWs - I figured (in the end and your pointers) out the PW and UNames were the log ins (what i call them) for both computers. I went into 'YTS' mistake mode trying to figure out 'what password'!

Yip, I have log ins for both computers which only the family log into each day. I used them and the IPs are both on the ES file manager.

So now I have access to both computers via LAN and there is a public folder on there.

What I would like to do is make folders for game roms and movies/tv series (within the public), so I can get plex or kodi running to watch the movies and play roms via emu players.

I make it easier for the family to press on player and then choose what they want played. If that not the case choosing via the PC folder - would I need to stick USB stick on there and transfer files to that?

Bascially now getting the groundwork down to add all the files.

Thanks again for all the help

29 Nov 15 #591
Glad you've got it mostly working now. I'm a little confused about what you actually want to do now though. Kodi would have already been able to see the movie files etc... you just add the share into kodi, so if you want videos, you go to videos in kodi and [add videos], click on browse, then choose how you get those videos to the shield. You must have done this before if you used kodi to view them, for instance I use SMB, so scroll down to SMB and choose WORKGROUP, then the share. If you use plex then i'm not sure as I have never used plex, sorry.

The American nvidia website is having a cyber Monday sale with $50 off. I wonder will there be any deals in the UK.
I am going to ring tomorrow morning and see what's up with my order. I processed it at exactly 23:59 on Thursday night, when there was no mention of an estimated delivery date of 30th December. Like everyone else, I only received the confirmation email and money was taken out of my bank account straight away.

I emailed them asking them to tell me what's going on with my order and that if it's going to be dispatched on or after the 30th December, to cancel it. They just went ahead and blindly cancelled my order without even bothering to find out when it's going to be dispatched and told me that if my order is unable to be cancelled, I will be notified in the form of a shipping notification email. In other words, they have no idea what is going on. Logged in today and it looks like it's been cancelled despite them not bothering to find out when the estimated dispatch was. I'd avoid NVIDIA store direct and order from Amazon, Game or Scan. NVIDIA's customer service is complete tripe and now I've lost out on the offer because of NVIDIA's failure to provide an estimated delivery/dispatch date.

I am starting to think it was a scam by Nvidia, they lower the price on their site with loads of advertising, in turn Scan, Game and Amazon price match which sells stock, where do they then get their stock from..... Nvidia of course, who then try and get customers to cancel their orders by saying they won't get them until 30th of December.

Thank you for contacting the NVIDIA online store.

We show that your order hasn't shipped yet.

The charge you are referring to is a pre-authorization only.
A pre-authorization is a temporary hold to verify that funds are
available when you place an order. Pre-authorizations are typically
removed from your credit card transaction history when the full charge
processes and funds are withdrawn. However, in some cases, this process
can take up to 2 business days.

Please note that debit cards may display both the pre-authorization and
the completed payment as full charges for up to 5 to 7 business days
from the date of purchase. If you need assistance removing a
pre-authorization from your debit card transaction history, please
contact your bank or financial institution. We are not able to assist
with this action at the NVIDIA online store.

If cancellation is not possible, you will get a confirmation in the form
of shipping notification email.

They keep saying the same thing about if cancellation is not possible, I'm still £119 down as it stands.

I just got through to a yank on their customer service number. They haven't a clue with regards to the current status, but said that it will either be coming from a distributor or direct from their warehouse.
I asked when I should expect to receive the console and she said it would be with me this week, even though she didn't know the status of my order.
I pointed out that I chose to buy direct from Nvidia, but now regret it as I could have bought it from Amazon and had it delivered the next day. Her answer was that I could get a refund and buy it from Amazon, if that is what I wanted.

Mine from Amazon (UK lightening deal) came and the weekend and I have just got round to putting it on now. After the usual wifi and google sign in it started doing a update, which looks a major one as it weighs in at 700 odd mb. The thing is, it is taking an absolute age to do it, it's taking like a minute to download a single mb! and I'm on 50mb Virgin Media. The wifi must be strong as it is about 10cm away from the router. That's funny in a way, as mine was from Amazon too, got here in 2 days, but sent through Hermes UK, went to Newmarket Depot which is about 50 miles from me... it all depends on who is doing the actual delivery I guess, for me even yodel hasn't been that bad, citylink were probably one of the worst.

Have had mine since Friday, love it
Update took approx 5 mins in total, didn't notice it going slow at all, but have mine on gigabit LAN on an approx 69Mg down fibre. I tried out the wifi to see if it was worth me unhooking the gigabit, there's something weird there though, I tried connecting wifi without taking LAN cable out... kept telling me something was wrong, after checking password etc, finally figured out it might be overriding with LAN, but strange still that it gives you the impression there's soemthing wrong with your wifi connection.
Another thing is that I don't like using DHCP for connecting, but no matter what I tried with manually inputting static IP, it wouldn't let me... which is really strange as I know I'm not doing anything unusual for it to not let me, and all my other devices in the house (approx 22) I have set static IP addresses on with no trouble whatsoever :disappointed:

Already filled the 16GB storage though just with that and the free apps on the Nvidia store. You only have about 11GB after the OS so can be filled quickly if your not careful. Have a 32GB micro SD on the way from Amazon so hopefully at least some of the apps can be moved over to make space....

Unfortunately whilst it may seem like you are buying direct from Nvidia if you buy through their website, I believe Digital River may have a big hand in running the shop thereafter, which is a whole other kettle of fish.

The product itself is proving to be great fun, although unleashing its full potential is down to the owner researching how to expand it beyond the basic functions of Android TV.

Really feel sorry for you all. For future reference out of all the sellers offering this deal, Amazon are the best followed by E-buyer. I am always nervous of buying direct from suppliers. Also heard bad things about Scan.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the Google play store on the Shield TV to list all your compatible apps? The thing is on mine it is only listing the apps I have bought since getting the shield TV despite me using the regular Google play for several years and having hundreds of apps, some of which are definitely compatible as I managed to find a few by just browsing the store.

Shame it can't (please prove me wrong) seem to install third party app stores as I have literally hundreds of games on the Amazon app store and hundreds more on the Humble Bundle app too....

Not sure if it's exactly the same but it has casting support, like the Chromecast I believe, only found out as I left it idle a few minutes and it started doing the scenic photography collage thing the actual chromecast does and said it supported casting...

Very capable little device really....

got mine today, very impressed by the game streaming from my PC (nvidia GPU) to the box but less than impressed with the very locked down version of android on it - very few apps are supported and even if you sideload them they can't be controlled properly with pad/remote and won't show up on app page. keyboard/mouse seem pretty essential and i do hope it doesn't end up like chromecast with extremely poor app support.

Has anyone who ordered from the Nvidia Store NOT received their order yet? I haven't heard anything, received anything or even had a dispatch email.

I have just looked at my bank account and it appears that the £119.99 charge has been released by my bank making it available again. I'm assuming by this that Nvidia have cancelled my order even though I have never asked them to.
jjbrunton to kennyn1980
5 Dec 15 #676
Yes I'm yet to receive mine, I'm flying through the hierarchy at Digital River trying to figure out what's going on. They said that the 119.99 is released because it is a pre auth check to make sure they can charge the card??

I'm getting less and less hopeful we'll get ours though.
EsxPaul to kennyn1980
5 Dec 15 #677
Mine hasn't come yet and I haven't recieved any communication from Nvidia.

I've logged into my account and there is a new entry there labelled "Order Unsubmitted" so it looks like my order may have been cancelled too without me having asked them to do anything. This is my first time dealing direct with Nvidia and I'm starting to think it will be my last going by how unprofessional they seem to be.

Phoned Nvidia today looking for a delivery date, all they can tell me is that it's left the warehouse, what does this mean exactly? Haven't a clue, no means to track as the status of order has never changed. Maybe need to look more at the digital river route now.
jjbrunton to davuck
5 Dec 15 #679
I phoned Digital River today and after getting through to a manager (took an hour or so) they have mentioned that the Warehouse is awaiting a backorder fill (Monday 7th of December). I've requested a callback on Monday for an update.

When you say you called Nvidia, who exactly did you call? You can only really phone Digital River.

I hate to publicly name people but I am dealing with the manager 'Michelle' employee number 8783754 at Digital River.

5 Dec 15 #681
The only number I got was +442030145286, spoke to some American sounding lady, confirmed my order address etc, no more info than that, you got a better number for me to call digital river on jjbrunton? I will try phoning them on Monday if you can provide me with that number, cheers.
jjbrunton to davuck
5 Dec 15 #682
The number you gave is the Digital River number. I wouldn't mess around talking to the first person you speak to, just ask to speak to a supervisor then after that a manager, they will fight you a little on it but it should get you talking to someone that can give you more information (although I'm assuming you're in the same situation as me).

The number to phone Nvidia direct I was given was: +14084862000 Available from 5AM PST Mon-Fri

They are apparently receiving a stock resupply on Monday so I'm hoping it's shipped out then, if not I have a phone call with the same person then.
davuck
5 Dec 15 #683
Yes I'm in the same situation as you, just annoyed at when placing order items in stock and then heard nothing, anyhow thanks for number and guidance, let's hope stock is replenished on Monday, I'll still be giving them call on Monday though.

Looks like I wasn't the only one who had issues with the clowns at NVIDIA.

I didn't ask for my order to be cancelled, but asked them what my estimated delivery would be and that ONLY if it is estimated to be shipped after 30th December, then to go ahead and cancel it. Without even bothering to clearly follow my instructions, they went ahead and blankly cancelled it. Even then, they couldn't tell me whether it has been cancelled for sure or not because they don't know if it has been sent for shipment or not. Basically, they have no idea what the status of the order is, when it will be shipped or what is going on. Luckily my cancellation went through a few days later and looking at the messages on this thread I'm glad mines was cancelled.

My experience with emailing NVIDIA seemed like I was talking to a brick wall and only got a pre-written response to my emails. There's clearly a lack of communication and information between NVIDIA and their fulfilment company.

My order was cancelled and it appears as:

"Boxed Shipment
Quantity Cancelled: 1"

under the Shield and Shield Remote in the Order Details page so I don't think yours has been cancelled. Hope that helps.

5 Dec 15 #686
Hi, I ordered direct from NVIDIA (digital river) and it came today via Parcel force. Wasn't expecting it, they just appeared and I just happened to be in! I sent a chaser e-mail to Nvidia a few days ago, but I didn't use the word cancel, I just asked if I actually had a genuine order or not and they said yeah, of course. My order status hasn't updated yet despite the fact that I've got it, so don't expect that you'll know it's coming, it might just appear. Also, I think they are just getting these out in the order they were placed, probably, who knows for certain. So hang on in there if you've ordered the black Friday deal direct from nvidia with the free remote, hopefully you'll get it soon....
Hustler1337 to jronald01
5 Dec 15 #688
Out of interest, what time did you place your order? Thanks
If it's officially cancelled, it appears as "Quantity Cancelled: 1" where the Quantity is stated under each item. Here's how it looks:

I've just had a look at my order and it just says 'Boxed Shipment' under Shield and Shield Remote. Even their order statuses don't seem to be consistent.

This is the first and last time I ever buy anything via the Nvidia store.

My already broke just used once second time try to use but does not work, after spending 45 mins with Nvida shield customer service over the chat they said they cannot help, solution he gave me is to switch off for 10 mins and start again if still does not work return to retailer I bought from. Contacted Amazon they said will send me new on Monday and once I get that send the faulty one back. I agree with many people on here who say it is important to buy from good retailers.

Sorry to hear of your troubles and thank you very much for your help. Perhaps my order isn't yet cancelled after all, going by what you say.

So after phoning them on Monday and getting past first lady on phone, I was still no further forward on the status of my order, same answers as before "at warehouse" very frustrated and almost cancelled order.

SURPRISE my order has just arrived!!!!! No email of notification of out for delivery, no change in
status when I log in to my Nvidia order.

Here's hoping that for those that have ordered from Nvidia now get there's soon, guess it's just a waiting game and how long you are prepared to wait.

13 Dec 15 #706
I finally got mine. I'm really glad they didn't process my cancellation request, it's a great device.

Apart from the obvious uses such as Netflix etc, I have a good selection of emulators installed and a few native Android games that can use the controller. I've signed up for the three month trial of Geforce Now, which works very well (much better than Playstation Now). Gamestream from my PC over AC Wi-Fi works flawlessly with no noticeable input lag. I've been playing Fallout 4 and GTA V on my TV at 1080p 60 fps. The quality is as good as sitting in front of my PC. Even the games that aren't officially supported work perfectly when running from Steam.

I'll probably have a play about with Kodi when I have the time.

£120 well spent for me.

Do you have a 5ghz router? How far away from it are you and are you in a flat or house? Just asking as I sometimes get some stuttering on 2.4ghz
kennyn1980
13 Dec 15 #708
Yeah, 5GHz AC. My router is in my livingroom and my PC is in the room above. The signal has to pass through one wall and the floor. I'm still going to buy some homeplugs for the added stability. I think I will get the TP-Link AV1200
