The launcher is basically what the android home screen app screen look like and how they behave. So for example if you don't like Samsung's touchwiz interface on their phones, installing the Nova launcher will let you choose how your home screen looks. I run it on my note 4 as I don't like the Samsung default icon layout so with nova launcher I can change that, I can change the animation when I swipe between screens, the app icon layout etc.

Not sure if anyone answered you but the part of Android with the Home Screen (where you can put widgets and app shortcuts) and the App Drawer (the list of apps) are collectively known as a "launcher". WIth Nova (Prime) you can customise pretty much exactly how it looks and behaves. It is also very reliable and has great performance compared to others.

That name comes from it being a launcher of apps and other features on Android. You could consider it an extra layer, but it isn't CPU-intensive. Think of it as a dashboard, and a damn good one at that. This is a bargain.

In order to resolve the error, perform the following:
Open up the "Settings" app on your android device, then navigate to "Application manager".
Find "Google Play Store" on the list (should be alphabetical) and tap it.
Tap the "Force stop" button and confirm to close the application.
Tap the "Uninstall updates" button and confirm. This will take the Play Store back to the factory version.
Open up the Play Store and accept terms & conditions.
You should now be able to install applications without the DF-BPA-10 error.

Like others are saying - great launcher. Gives look and feel of stock, but slicker and with tweaks like changing icon sizes, grid sizes on home screen and app drawer. Also love the ability to save/restore the setup/appearance to Google drive.
Tried loads of different launchers before settling on this a few years ago. Cannot recommend highly enough. Absolute bargain for 10p.

7 Dec 15#38
If you don't mind me asking.. did you find the stock software on S4 to have really poor battery life, and did you notice any improvement with any ROMs you've flashed? I encouraged a family member to get an S4, but it lasts way less than a day even with very limited use and all the usual battery drains turned off.
Either returning it or flashing an AOSP ROM were my two main ideas, so any advice appreciated.

• Gestures - Swipe, pinch, double tap and more on the home screen to open your favorite apps

• Custom Drawer Groups - Create new tabs or folders in the app drawer
• Hide Apps - Keep a clean app drawer by hiding never used apps
• Icon Swipes - Set custom actions for swiping on app shortcuts or folders

I have used a number of Launchers but Nova is always the one I go back to. The ability to have completely clear home screens (even getting rid of the Google search bar from stock) and resize and remove padding from widgets are just two of the features I now expect from Android.
When I first tried to move from iPhone (4) to Android (Samsung Galaxy SII), I was put off by the interface, but I would later realise that it was more TouchWiz than Android. Even the interface on the S4 felt clunky. If you have an Android device and the interface is not doing it for you, you HAVE to try this...

Stock was fine, but i prefer the customisation of a Custom ROM - I use Resurrection Remix 5.5.9 and its brilliant, but I generally get to the end of the day just fine (with my 3 year old battery) but that is with very heavy use (2 hours of video play whilst commuting on top of which games and social media) You need to be clever about your screen brightness that is the worst offender, and by making sure you arent syncing accounts you arent interested in keeping synced.

Been using the free one for years myself on various phones. I've now paid for Titanium Backup, Textra and Nova Prime.
2 essentials have always been Textra & Titanium. Free one being Nova, can't moan at 10p! Being able to backup all apps+data, then trying different ROMS and flashing apps+data back on along with Nova settings etc... Quick & Painless. Definitely worth looking into if you like changing. It's amazing how on one rom, the battery would last a day.. and another it'd last twice as long. (Although, I have to say - the S6 battery is made normal by a good rom - stock and it's terrible).

You're always using Touchwiz as in the user interface it's embedded in to your Samsung phone's ROM, however it's easy to swap from Nova Launcher to Touchwiz by changing the default launcher in settings. I use Nova Launcher with faster than light settings. It's an OK launcher, then again we're talking Android here so whatever you have will always come down to being less of a laggy mess than the stock launcher. I have a Galaxy S6, great hardware crippled by the horrendous Lollipop OS.

It's a launcher to replace the stock one, like touchwiz on Samsung, once you replace your launcher with Nova you can do pretty much anything, first thing to do is get the Nova notification app and set that up in its settings and in Nova, then get a new icon pack from the play store, pulse and axis are my favs, then you can remove the dock, I always do that next, and then customise the layout to however you like.

Is it just me? Really like the launcher but it seems to have made my phone super slow and hogging the battery. Anyone else?
sancheez to andyluv
8 Dec 151#196
Nope.
Been using Nove for years. Since the Note 1. Never caused slowdown. Never hogged battery. Looking at GSAM, Nova usually consumes less than 0.5% of my battery usage.
Great launcher. Hugely customisable with the full version if you're willing to put in a bit of effort. Yeah, you can customise vanilla Android. But you can go way beyond that with Nova and a bit of clever design ....
Haven't scanned the whole thread to see if anyone has posted a similar link, but check out some of the customisation you can do with a little creativity (they're not all Nova based, but you get the idea):
Don't worry about being the thicky at the back of the class. You've just stepped out into the front of the class :stuck_out_tongue:
Nova is IMO the best launcher available and has been for years. Lightweight, fast, compatible with every device I've ever put it on and manages its memory well with minimal redraws. Buy it, spend 10mins setting it up, back your settings up to the cloud and never look back.
One feature really worth switching for is the ability to lock the apps and widgets on the screens.
This is wonderful for people who are slightly cack-handed (Your mums phone, your kids phone - or your phone if your kids use it !).
It's so easy with all other launchers to press slightly too long on an icon or widget and woosh your icon has moved, or your weather widget has vanished. Locking prevents this. once locked you have to long press (for seconds), then specifically choose unlock in order to move/delete things.

might be (ok... probably) a stupid question but... does nova change the function of the home button (circle at bottom) or the app drawer button (grid icon above the circle)?
i am 'sure' it used to be:
press app drawer - it opens, app drawer button still there, press it again and drawer closes
also whenever i pressed one of them (i forget which)) it took me to the middle of my home screens
am running 20 homescreens atm and when i press home it just opens the app drawer
(was running free version previously)
on another note i am using multipicture live for individual pictures on each screen but it seems to 'freeze' from time to time and have a the same picture on each page - requiring me to select multipicturelive from live wallpapers in settings again
anyone know why or can recommend a better way to get separate pictures up or a fix?
cheers
chocci to brilly
8 Dec 151#202
Buttons do as you describe but you can change the home button to do Nearly anything
Home button takes you to your default home screen (center one)
Turn off "only on default page" option under "gestures settings" and then one tap takes you to last used screen with two taps taking you the the default home screen
NitrousX123
8 Dec 15#201
It's a great app, been using mine for well over a year now. Organise apps into folders customise the dock tray and you can add multiple homescreens. So many new features are added every week too and now its compatible with mashmellow update too

re 20 homescreens: um maybe not home screens (not up on the terms obviously) but 20 screens i can swipe left and right to each with different pic and/or apps on screen
edit: i did only have 7/9 but seems i can just keep adding for some reason

8 Dec 15#205
great thanks for the help, so maybe adding prime has changed default behaviour?
i changed home to default now so goes back, it also closes app drawer but i am fairly sure i used app drawer icon to open app drawer and the button remained to close it
still, much better thanks

My OH uses Atom.
It's OK. Nowhere near as customisable as the full version of Nova, but it does the job.
Although, her phone does seem to lock up sometimes. Not often, but totally locked when it does. Mine never does. We're both Samsung, both running the same version of Android (Although I'm a Note 3 vs her S5). It's the launcher screens that it seems to freeze on (requires a hard reboot when it happens) so I'm inclined to blame Atom ....

I run it on my Sony SP. Much of it is down to taste, but I do prefer Nova for sorting apps into a far more manageable order That was my original reason to buy it, but of course that was in the days of Gingerbread I think.
Now though, I use it on all Android devices which brings some uniformity to my set up when having say a Sony phone, Samsung Note 10 and a cheapo no name tablet for mucking about on.

8 Dec 15#249
Depends how creative you want to get.
Some of the features that allow tiny grids, overlapping widgets, unread counts, etc etc etc are only available on the premium version.
If you want to get REALLY creative, you need the previous version.
More to the point, 10p? Seriously? You're questioning whether 10p is worth spending? Not as if you'll be able to clear your mortgage with it if you hang onto it .....

8 Dec 15#250
Thanks OP. I've had the free version since I bought the Nook HD+ from a deal I saw on here back in September 2013. I've always been happy with the free version but at 10p I figured I may as well upgrade to full.

sancheez
8 Dec 152#253
I'm not convinced people are actually seeing the full potential of this.
Is it faster than ....
Is it better than ....
How does it compare to ....
No.
For me, the point of this is how customisable it is. If you want to get creative on your phone desktop, this is the sort of thing you need. If you're just going to install it as an alternative to prod a standard icon, on a standard screen ..... aka - use it in EXACTLY the same way as stock launchers, but it looks slightly different ..... then you might as well stick with the free version.
But. If you want a unique and custom phone UI, and are prepared to put in a little work, the sky is the limit with this stuff.

Probably best just to watch some YouTube videos. I got this because touchwiz lagged and the icon and widget layout were funny ie on my s6 the notes widget wouldn't fill the whole screen but on nova it does.
I also use it to lock icons on the home screen so my kids don't delete or move apps. It's also virtually lag free and is the first thing I download on a new device. I change devices often so I can backup my layout and transfer it to new device.
Those are just a few but the options are endless. I paid a few pounds but This app is worth every penny.

”error retrieving information from server (DF-PPA-10)"
Open up the "Settings" app on your android device, then navigate to "Application manager".
Find "Google Play Store" on the list (should be alphabetical) and tap it.
Tap the "Force stop" button and confirm to close the application.
Tap the "Uninstall updates" button and confirm. This will take the Play Store back to the factory version.
Open up the Play Store and accept terms & conditions.
You should now be able to install applications without the DF-BPA-10 error.

This and Poweramp were the best apps on sale this year
Once you've gotten used to swipe up for Google & swipe down for app drawer it's hard to go back!
Best launcher for Android that I've used by far, I love it.
Thanks op <3
Heat OP!
crabby
Perfect for little purchases here and there.
(these are all free too!)
Double finger swipes too
Great for launching Heatdroid and Dealpad :-)

Even the side loaders should buy at this price
Time to send it back, methinks.. :disappointed:
You can get unread badges on the home screen icons when you have the prime version, using the following app:

I actually like Touchwiz though :disappointed:
2 essentials have always been Textra & Titanium. Free one being Nova, can't moan at 10p! Being able to backup all apps+data, then trying different ROMS and flashing apps+data back on along with Nova settings etc... Quick & Painless. Definitely worth looking into if you like changing. It's amazing how on one rom, the battery would last a day.. and another it'd last twice as long. (Although, I have to say - the S6 battery is made normal by a good rom - stock and it's terrible).
I was using the less than authentic version of it so I'm happy to pay 50c because I like the Tesla Unread Notifications.
I am obviously in the minority lol
Apps worth paying for
Poweramp
Amplify
Greenify
SD maid
That's it
App2sd
Foldermount
Appmgr
Thanks
Open up Play, quick search, 10p confirmed :sunglasses:
What??? I already own???
Fire it up, confusion reigns, closed. :man:
Move on. Nothing to see here......
I am using the Google now Launcher but was looking for this on the cheap, as this is the best Launcher on the market
It's been a while since I used it, but back then the extra features in the pro version were easily worth 10p.
10% off thanks to the Google Play Music Trial
9 pence "TAKE MY MONEY"
No, pirates prefer booty!
but 10p ... well
this is by far the best launcher i have ever used : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ginlemon.flowerpro&hl=en
If having the extra app bothers you just hide it from app drawer in Nova and pretend it's not there!

Easily the clearest and most accurate weather app going IMHO, lots of widgets with transparency.

Awesome, everything I need for free.....

Heat added. Which is the best app for managing multiple email accounts?
Been using Nove for years. Since the Note 1. Never caused slowdown. Never hogged battery. Looking at GSAM, Nova usually consumes less than 0.5% of my battery usage.
Great launcher. Hugely customisable with the full version if you're willing to put in a bit of effort. Yeah, you can customise vanilla Android. But you can go way beyond that with Nova and a bit of clever design ....
Haven't scanned the whole thread to see if anyone has posted a similar link, but check out some of the customisation you can do with a little creativity (they're not all Nova based, but you get the idea):

Just keeps getting better and better
i am 'sure' it used to be:
press app drawer - it opens, app drawer button still there, press it again and drawer closes
also whenever i pressed one of them (i forget which)) it took me to the middle of my home screens
am running 20 homescreens atm and when i press home it just opens the app drawer
(was running free version previously)
on another note i am using multipicture live for individual pictures on each screen but it seems to 'freeze' from time to time and have a the same picture on each page - requiring me to select multipicturelive from live wallpapers in settings again
anyone know why or can recommend a better way to get separate pictures up or a fix?
cheers
Home button takes you to your default home screen (center one)
Turn off "only on default page" option under "gestures settings" and then one tap takes you to last used screen with two taps taking you the the default home screen
thanks
re 20 homescreens: um maybe not home screens (not up on the terms obviously) but 20 screens i can swipe left and right to each with different pic and/or apps on screen
edit: i did only have 7/9 but seems i can just keep adding for some reason
i changed home to default now so goes back, it also closes app drawer but i am fairly sure i used app drawer icon to open app drawer and the button remained to close it
still, much better thanks
any idea about the wall papers / screen thingy?
then persevered and its amazing.
Couldn't do without it now. Use with a decent icon pack and you're sorted.
First thing I do when installing a new custom rom is to install nova and restore my desktop
It's OK. Nowhere near as customisable as the full version of Nova, but it does the job.
Although, her phone does seem to lock up sometimes. Not often, but totally locked when it does. Mine never does. We're both Samsung, both running the same version of Android (Although I'm a Note 3 vs her S5). It's the launcher screens that it seems to freeze on (requires a hard reboot when it happens) so I'm inclined to blame Atom ....
best thing is you can backup your settings to the cloud and import them to all other devices so saves a load of time if you like uniformity across devices.
I'll figure it out when I get home
Does anyone have any links to a guide or You Tube videos to get the best of of this launcher?
Now though, I use it on all Android devices which brings some uniformity to my set up when having say a Sony phone, Samsung Note 10 and a cheapo no name tablet for mucking about on.
Thanks again, and have a great Christmas.
I could clear my Mortgage with it if I only had 10p left to pay
You can tell i'm tech savvy !
Best launcher out there IMO. Smooth, fast and light.

Easy to spot all the apps Google didn't automatically download on setting up your new device too as nova keeps the icons in place (just greyed out)
Bought anyway, but not sure I need any of the premium features.
All Android smartphones come with a launcher
BTW, google opinion never sent me any thing to do...
just realised today I've been using the free version and the full one is £3.99
