I've had this lens since it came out. It has three ED elements and has excellent picture quality. It is not slow to focus and I have photographed fast jets on a regular basis. There is a newer AF-S version but is about £1,800 in the UK.

Widely regarded as a majorly flawed lens. Optically fine, but way too slow. I owned the 80-400mm G version and wasn't really happy with that one either. The 70-300mm is a better choice than the old 80-400mm D version on a budget of around £450. The 70-200 f2.8 is a different league, i love mine, but never use it for wildlife. Losing that 200mm is a lot, unless it's close up Big Game. If i were looking to start off with a long lens for wildlife, i'd probably be looking at the Sigma 150-600mm, but you're looking at twice the price of this Deal.

Apart from the Obvious (100mm) there's not enough to warrant picking this up over my Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S VR IF-ED Lens is there? seeing as it hasn't got ED and relatively slow auto-focus?? or am I missing something??PLMK if I am?, clearly a newb but always wanting to expand the collection with the right pieces at the right price...

Agreed sticking with my 70-300 until I can upgrade to 70-200 VRII

Thought it was the ED version for a moment... Not a bad lens though, you can however find them for around £450 if you keep your eyes peeled...

Not brand new. All of them at that price are used.

I've seen it new for this price before - like I say, just wait for a sale, as stated the RRP is out of date. A good lens all the same; albeit not comparable to the awesome ED version!

Nota bad deal but that RRP is way out of date. Maybe right for the ED model but this is the older D model.
