With one distinct difference: the other tablets you mentioned can only ever run the mobile versions of the apps that you will likely use it for. This is a considerable disadvantage to Microsoft's offering.
Frankly and despite all the usual hype, i know my money will be better invested in the Surface when compared to both now and at a time when the competition will be forced/phased out some 18mo down the line.

I have the 4Gb/128Gb model and it's terrific for the intended purpose.
I'm still at a loss as to why anyone would even want to consider gaming on these. Just because it runs Windows 10 doesn't mean its meant for that. These are productivity devices. Even the Pro versions are sold on that basis.
Yes, they will play tablet games from the Windows Store perfectly just like an iPad or Android tablet would play games from the App or Play stores. But full W10 desktop games? These just aren't meant for that.
As for being expensive? Well, you can get a 10.1-inch Linx 1010 for around £130 including a keyboard dock and it's just fine. But the screen on the Surface is bigger (10.8") and far, far better. So is the build quality. These are premium products designed for the iPad and Xperia Z4 end of the market. And this offers something none of those tablets can - a full active digitiser with pen. Yes, the pen costs extra but it's a fundamental selling point of the Surface.
The pen is probably the reason to get a Surface, more than any other. It's not for gaming or pro video editing or anything else beyond the constraints of the processor. But it is a premium device that is unsurpassed for productivity with note taking and sketching features that put it in its own product class. If that is what you need, it's worth every penny.

2Gb RAM though, which is pretty expensive for a tablet, and for a computer you need 8Gb RAM really.

If you are -just- using these as a tablet, they are very expensive. There are far cheaper options available with similar specs (although the screen is very nice). If you're going to use the keyboard, you have to buy it as an extra. It does make it a much more flexible machine though.
Once you start using it as a proper laptop, I'll agree that 2GB RAM is a constraint. More than a few tabs open starts to make it strain. The 4GB RAM/128GB storage version would be a more sensible option. However, 8GB would be total overkill, these are only powered by an Atom processor after all.
As for gaming... I wouldn't even consider it unless you are talking very casual web-based games. If you are thinking of any kind of gaming that requires smooth graphics, even the next level up Core M processors are slow. You should be looking at an i3 or i5 and if you are serious you look for a dedicated (non-integrated) graphics card. Also, most games do not work very well with touch screen, so again you need to get the keyboard which is roughly ~£100.

The iPad Air 2 has 2Gb RAM and 16Gb storage at £399. For 64Gb it's £479.
This device is designed to compete with the iPad and high-end Android tablets and is price competitive for this level of build quality. Windows 10 works perfectly well on 2Gb RAM and is even better with 4Gb. Even the Pro 4 with Core M or i5 starts at 4Gb RAM and is double the price.
8Gb is complete overkill for the usage scenario of this tablet.

Windows has been able to run on 1gb since windows 8 was released, 2gb is OK.
(Unless you plan to be doing professional image.video editiing, 3d desighn or gaming)

Plenty of older games work this is full Windows so anything that runs on Windows 10 will work - some will need the keyboard add on or a keyboard mouse though. I read a post someone got fm2015 working fine on a kind 10 with 1gb for example. Perfect for Xbox one game streaming as well. 2gb is ok 4 would run smoother. It isn't going to run new games at any standard but the old stuff is way better (gameplay wise) than your iOS android stuff.
Hot deal as this is not showing on the currys websites, but it is worth checking currys instore, I was in currys folkestone this afternoon and it was still £349, there is also £10 off a £150 at currys with o2.
