If your employer uses Microsoft office then there is a good chance you can purchase Microsoft office 2016 for home use for £9.95.

use the link above to check.

alternatively, ask your HR dept if they are apart of the Microsoft home use program.

can't go wrong for a tenner. My previous purchase via the HUP allowed me to install it on 3 computers.

It's also worth noting that if you're a college or university student you can usually get Office for free during your studies from https://portal.office.com/start?sku=student
- geekonthepc

If your company uses Office 365 for Business, you can access http://login.microsoftonline.com and install the desktop apps, for free, on your home pc or laptop.

still running office 2010, for one sole reason.

it still has the ability to add auto-corrections with a right click directly on the word. this is invaluable for people who need to write long technical/academic pieces, with lots of terminology. it also optimises writing speed, without having to constantly go back and correct typos.

for some inexplicable reason this was removed after 2010; in 2013/16 you have to go into the menus and manually add each autocorrection word by word.

for shame MS, for shame.

It says only the Office 365 subscription version gets any updates. So for anyone who buys the 'one-off' version I can see the lack of security updates eventually forcing users to either pay again for an updated version now and again, or else they'll be pushed towards the full 365 subscription version in order to stay constantly up to date with security updates. It may not be a problem to you at current prices, but in either case it's not a one-off purchase.

In comparison, unless you need something very specific that only MS Office has, for the vast majority of users there are other cheaper and just as good options available e.g. Libre Office which is totally free plus all updates are also free.

9 Dec 15 #66
No you can only buy one version Mac or PC per release.
naughtybunnies
9 Dec 15 #65
From Microsoft website - It is a one-off until you want the next version.

What's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?

Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.

Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.

The NHS as a whole doesn't qualify for this like they used to with the old Connecting for Health/Microsoft Wide Enterprise agreement.
Its down to individual NHS trusts to sign to up to their own Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft for their staff to be able to qualify for the Home User Program. So in short if you work for the NHS then ask your IT department, they will know if your trust has an Enterprise Agreement. Some will have signed up, others (like my trust) haven't.

Pretty sure they don't. The NHS used to have a software agreement with Microsoft, that was scrapped back in 2010 pretty much as soon as the Tories got the keys to number 10.
sonicdeathmonkey
9 Dec 15 #56
This is spot on. Although the level of Enterprise agreement the company has will influence what you can access. My company has just renewed our Enterprise agreement with MS, however only for office 2016 as we are not quite ready to take the 365 plunge. Visio and Project can also be available depending on how many versions the business has in use. Even if you worked for a supermarket e.g. ASDA chances are they have an enterprise agreement andas an employee even on the shop floor you can get this deal. You just need to get the access code from your IT department. As other users have said, don't ask HR, 99% of HR departments in businesses I have worked at glaze over at any technical stuff like :smirk:

Apparently not, the key is specific to the variant you select. Getting a colleague to buy the other version is obviously a solution as someone suggested but I imagine that the home use programme is for more than one computer in the household eg 2 or 3 hence if you have PC and Mac and don't have a colleague with a spare allocation you need to choose carefully which variant to select. Mac may be the best choice as it has been 5 years since the last release.

serious question for those that know: what's the difference between office and apache open office?
googley2 to marineville
8 Dec 15 1 #36
Well there is an awful lot of difference between the two programs BUT it all depends on how much you use the program as to what benefits you get from it. Open Office is now being binned by many and replaced with Libre Office as this is regularly updated and gives a better performance. Microsoft office has many more functions and advances within it that any serious computer uses will know - not internet user that different. Its shows when you try to use macros, and other advanced functions such as in barcharts and tables when Microsoft Office features well above the others for performance. If all you need is a typing program to type a few letters now and then Apache is more than sufficient and free so no need to spend on Microsoft programs, however if you need professional use then I would only recommend Microsoft as they outperform the other programs then. Example, if you want to create a label document
with all the addresses for your xmas cards, its so easy in Microsoft but not so with other programs. Hope than helps you understand the differences there are obviously many more but not going to spend all night listing them here.

If your company has a Microsoft Enterprise agreement then you can ask your IT department for the correct link and info you need to enter and it has always been about £9. It may say you need to install on only one device but they would never know if you have it on 3. They may just make you do a phone automated license registration which takes about 5 minutes and if you speak to a person and not the automated phone, then simply say you had to wipe your previous device so this is the first install  - I must have done this 1000 tie over the years with various home and business licenses as sometimes you will have to wipe a device and reinstall the software. Hope this helps.
