I was going to jump for a 950 on release, but the reviews have been less than enthusiastic. I really like WP 8.1 but 10 sounds very buggy at the moment. I'll see how things are looking in a couple of months.

got mine delivered yesterday, coming from the lumia 640 and I love it , still a little buggy but awesome phone, I have read reviews that it needs a week or so of use to sort the battery out.

to be fair it has flagship components (and the best camera along with the Sammy S6 /LG G4) but its god awful looking/finish, half baked OS (ie still basically a buggy beta really) and the key app gap is greater than ever (since MS publically gave up on having a competing phone platform)

price it at the £250-300 level with the leather back fitted (basically the LG G4 price now) and the physical handset can compete .. the OS/app gap just depends on what you need and whether it works and is in the app store

I agree. I like Lumias, but I was expecting better looking phone than this. The design is basically the same like my old 640, which is a phone for £80-£90. I have expected something more from MS. I'm still going to buy it but I will spice it up with a nice cover (that's the only good thing on Lumias - removable covers)

and give it to my GF for Xmass.

Well that's put the cat amongst the pigeons. I've got it on pre-order with Amazon for £5 less, but think I'd prefer the customer service from JL...Amazon have a habit of trying to avoid all responsibility for the goods they sell after 30 days.

I've read a few that have been lukewarm, particularly about Windows 10 mobile having a beta feel to it still. Going to give it a couple of months for them to iron out the niggles before I bite - hopefully the price will also have dropped by then.

Engadget review

This is pretty representative of the reviews I've read.
ipswich78
14 Dec 15 #17
It's not, that's very competitively priced for a flagship phone. It's very sensible by Microsoft / Nokia - they are a long, long way behind Android / iOS in the popularity stakes buy by pricing a top quality phone like this they may well pull in a few new customers. If I wasn't so tied into the Google environment / services I would be very tempted.

Engadget are well know to be up Apple's a** so wouldn't trust a review from them.

For a more honest review, look at GSM arena:

As far as the windows OS goes. I have 2 phones, an android I am using now which has good APS and is a fine toy. I also have a Nokia 920 that I use for work that has the best phone OS bar none. if the apps were better on windows I would bin my android tomorrow. But the OS is just so much better than android or ios for getting the important things done and sincs with my office and home PCs flawlessly.
sancheez
14 Dec 15 #22
Indeed. The problem being, depreciation on on Windows phones (even the good Nokia ones like these) is HUGE by comparison to the other two.

Apple stuff holds value better than Android. But Windows phones are way worse than Android.

I buy outright and use a rolling SIM only contract and generally try and time my new phones so I still get decent resale on my old one. I made my biggest loss, by a HUGE margin, on my Lumia 920. Paid over £400 for it new. Got less than £100 for it less than a year later. In perfect condition.

I actually quite liked the phone, but decided it just wasn't for me and went back to 'Droid.

It's a shame. They are good phones (with excellent cameras). I even like the OS. It's slick, fast and crashed less than both 'Droid and iOS. But they really don't hold their value well at all. I wouldn't buy one at this price personally.

The comments paint a different picture. The negative of it being expensive for what it is is popular among reviews but that seems to be based on it using the Snapdragon 808 SoC which they then compare to the newest Nexus 5 which has a lower res screen, less RAM and a far crappier camera.

Spec wise its in line with the likes of the Galaxy S6 (non-Edge), Blackberry Priv, the latest Sony Xperia Z5 and the LG G4. The G4 still sells for £399 while the Priv and Z5 sell for £500+. In particular Engadget never complained about the price of the Z5 when it was over £100 more than the 950's RRP price.

In a lot of the 950 reviews there's this unrealistic expectation that it should be priced similar to the Nexus X5 (the 32GB being about £70 cheaper) while offering the specification similar to a £400-£500 top end phone.

I have been using Windows Phone 8.1 for the past few years and I was eagerly awaiting this flagship but I will admit to being less than impressed with what they came up with. I went for a 550 on offer so that I could try Windows 10 Mobile (and sell it without much loss if need be), and I have to agree with it still feeling BETA. It's far from ready, despite all the delays, and the majority or apps are still wp8 versions and it shows. On top of this there is sometimes a weird issue of the mobile carriers detecting it as tethering due to the universal OS (well I suspect that's the reason anyway). They need to be more frequent with their updates and get their own house in order before they can expect devs to jump on the platform. I had the vision of being able to use the continuum feature for the likes of kodi, vlc, plex etc but it seems that's a LONG way off for now... Bit of a shame really...
bilbob to JoeSpur
14 Dec 15 #27
to be fair, as you've observed, the OS is BRAND new, and yet you criticise it for the majority of the apps still being 8.1 versions??
I've yet to see an major OS revision from ANY of the major players yet arrive without the need for pretty big fixes once it goes out to the masses. I've got 10 on my 930, and yes there are a couple of annoyances, but no show stoppers... I fully expect to see updates come along quite quickly and sort them out.

14 Dec 15 #28
Biggest problem with Windows phones is the lack of useful apps. Especially for a power user like myself.
Used to 520 for a few months a while back and it was great at doing the basics and if thats all you need a phone for then i would happily recommend, but if you are a techy and use your phone out in the field they are next to useless.
JoeSpur to kennyhkw
14 Dec 15 #30
If u are a POWER USER TECHY you wouldn't buy the lowest of the low-end available. They had 520, 620, 7,8,9,1020 and you went for the cheapest lowest spec one of the lot to be fair.
Mattevansc3 to kennyhkw
14 Dec 15 2 #36
You might have to actually give some examples there because I'm techy, a power user and use my phone out in the field. Between Office, OneDrive, Dropbox, Plex, Evernote, HERE maps and countless others I find my windows phone to be nowhere near useless
JoeSpur
14 Dec 15 #29
People talk about "the app gap" all the time, but it doesn't affect me in the slightest. *Most* of what I want is available to me, and what isn't there I can just use on my iPad. The stuff I need to take out with me is all available. I realise the OS is brand new but it was in BETA for months and the devs have had tools to update for ages. If they will be updated to universal apps then that's fine, but if the devs have left them to rot that's another story. The Win10M features like flicking the bottom of the screen to hide the nav bar are not available to WP8 apps so you DO notice it. No showstoppers but a few annoyances I must admit (and take it from me I'm a BIG Windows fan!) and I'm not 100% sure but there's sometimes a problem returning to home screen on Lumia 550 and I believe it could be due to a WP8 app (or its live tile). It maybe doesn't affect the 950 (or indeed 930) with the extra processing power available...
kennyhkw
14 Dec 15 #31
Yes i went for the cheapest one to get me through a few months after i drowned my android phone on holiday lol
But what has the model of phone got to do with apps???
Does the 1020 have some special extra apps that i don't know about? Is there some sort of elitist app store?
JoeSpur
14 Dec 15 #32
Well what did a big field techy like yourself need that wasn't on WP8? SnapChat? Lol
kennyhkw
14 Dec 15 #33
Lol nah, the most obvious one i can remember was wifi analyser! Can't work without that app.
JoeSpur
14 Dec 15 #34
Oh right. I'm sure there's an alternative app out there. All the VPN stuff on Windows is good too. Android is definitely the place to be if you are experimental, but it's also the least secure as its so easy to run a rogue app. People seem to like that, and you can now side load apps on Win10M also. There's also ways to get Android apps running on it (experimental) and that support may or may not be extended in the future, but as I said right now the software is a little buggy...
