We have put together this DIY package holiday for 14 nights in Puerto Vallarta, using our hotel search and some great fare flights we found over at Thomson with departure from Gatwick on the 2nd January returning 16th January. Since the airport is situated 10 minutes by foot from the airport, connections are not calculated in the price .
How to book: DIY holidays are when you book flights and hotels separately and are required to make payments to various suppliers. You will need to click the separate booking buttons which can be found above (blue buttons) and make individual payments to each of the respective suppliers. You should always check that the prices are the same and/or similar to the prices displayed on our screen shots, to ensure that the components of the offer have not gone up in price. If the listed dates or airports do not suit you, or you want to extend or shorten your stay, just go ahead and tweak the search according to your own preferences! This may, however lead to the price increasing. Additionally, the hotels and flights we have used are only an example of what package can be created, and you always have the option to select a cheaper or more expensive hotel to suit your budget.

I went to Puerto Vallarta years ago, it's very popular with Americans, it's a nice resort but in the middle of nowhere and nothing to do in the area (outside the resort) unlike the east coast, it's great if you just want sun, sand, clubs etc etc as the whole resort will have everything you need but if you want to see some of Mexico I would say this is not the place for you.

We went to puerto vallarta last year - about a week after several petrol stations in the area were fire bombed by a local drug gang - as was a bank immediately below a hotel. The bank was largely destroyed. There was more violence in the surrounding area with buses burnt out and soldiers shot. Passengers were ordered off the bus first. Cruise ships sopped visiting for a short time.
There is a crocodile reserve in the town and crocs sometimes show up on the beach.
Still possible to have a good holiday there but personally I dont plan to return.
