I was a bit sceptical about buying a MacBook Pro 5 years ago during my first year of uni. But when I look back, £800 investment over 5 years, has been a great purchase (still going strong with no need for any upgrades). I've only just ordered an SSD for £40 and hopefully it keeps going. Can't knock the quality at all.

If you've got the means to buy it, do it. If not, don't!

Yes this is the entry level latest MacBook Pro retina. Unless you have access to Unidays (uni student) you will have to pay £100 more from Apple and will have to pay for a warranty any longer than a year.

To be honest, the size and weight is not massively different between the Air and the Pro. The Air obviously tapers towards the front where the Pro doesn't and I'm guessing the Pro is a little heavier/bulkier, but really not to the level I have noticed too much. They are both the 13" versions I use and if you;re looking for the benefits of the upgrade, I don't think the form factor will be too much of an issue for you.

Let me know your thoughts on the Macbook Pro (is it this 13" one?). I've had a Macbook Air since 2012 (8gb version), and wouldn't mind an upgrade...not sure whether to go for another Air again or this Macbook Pro. I do like the form factor and weight of the Air now, just wondering if I'd miss it.

Even though this is a good deal if you explicitly want a macbook pro, I really don't see the point. For this price you could get a top of the line gaming desktop pc and still have money to buy an ultraportable windows laptop/netbook. Or just go for a very powerful high spec windows laptop (which might actually have a decent graphics card as well).
I get that macbooks are nice things to have, but realistically what are you going to do on it? Browse the web? You can do that just as well on a sub £200 netbook.

I'm definitely not an Apple fanboy, I'm pretty open to whatever is the best technology. For example, I firmly believe that Android is better than iOS. I have an iPad Mini (which I won at work) and find to be the worst user experience from any of my gadgets. It's basically a YouTube/Netflix machine and it's not even particularly good at running those, meanwhile my two year old HTC One M8 **** all over it in terms of functionality and performance.

But one thing I have become a recent convert to Apple over is their laptops. I always used to be the sort of person who would try and get the best spec for my money but having used a Macbook Air in work for the last year, I realised that there is more to performance that physical spec. The Apple machine seems to work better than the sum of its parts, if that makes sense. A PC with the same spec would be **** but my Air flies with everything I throw at it. It's 4gb RAM seems to work effortlessly while as I type this, the fan on my colleague's 8gb Lenovo Thinkpad is whirring away.

I picked up a Macbook Pro on Friday (JL matched the Currys deal for me before going public with this offer) and looking forward to using it for a good few years. It's a lot of money and not a lot of storage, but these are just things I factored into the decision.

Have the 256GB version of this and its a very competent and stable machine. Yeah, if you want to play PC games then likely its not for you but these are solid, blisteringly fast and stable machines. I think you all have to take into account that the resale value of this, even after 3 years, must be at least £300 i would reckon - the only reason you will want to get rid is to get another! (unless you really hate OSX and the less choice of software than mac).

I use a PC at work for windows/database development and purchases Parallels to run Windows virtual machines within OSX.. I have 2 of these running (one a data base server the other a normal client for .net development) with no loss of performance

I'd also like to point at to those saying MacBooks are expensive or over priced. They only appear this way as there are no cheap/budget lower spec models. They are all decent well-spec'd and well built machines. If you look online for a comparable windows 13" laptop you will see the prices are very similar. The cheapest I could find on Currys/PC world was an HP model at £799.99. The MacBooks will trump that on battery life and build quality so is therefor worth the extra money to a lot of people.

The 256GB model is also cheaper than Apple's price. The better performance you get from SSD storage (whether it be on a Mac or a Windows Laptop) far outweighs the inconvenience of possibly having to store some data on external drives/memory sticks.
At the moment 128/256/512 storage options are standard amongst all laptops with solid state drives and not just MacBooks, although admittedly Apple machines are not upgradeable and therefore they do charge a premium on the extra storage.

If people don't want to pay for a Mac book they can alway investigate the option of a Hackingtosh.

There are some good examples with full capability whilst using a PC/Notebook as the main build.

There are 'how to' examples online, indicating best equipment to use and so on.

I like apple products. But it is a lot of money, I had a brand new MacBook Air last year with 3 year Apple warranty, I kid you not I must have dropped about 3/4 drops of lucozade on the keyboard one day. Left it upside down and off for a day and it was still working the next. But when the battery was low and I plugged my charger it just turned off and that was the end of that. Apple said no to the repair and wanted to charge me £700 odd to fix it.. Basically long story short a few months in to my Mac I lost it all 1100 quid down the drain. Sold it for about 200 pounds on eBay and that's it. All that being said am going to get a pro retina next coz something about Windows just **** me off always seems laggy compared to Apple.Just be aware these laptops are still ... Laptops lol

What on earth is wrong with some people? Anyone who defines who they are by the car they drive, the phone they own or their laptop is necessarily a moron. Inanimate objects might be a substitute for a likeable personality or undersized genitalia but it won't remotely impress anyone with an ounce of intelligence. I've owned many Macs and PCs over the decades and have had equally as many issues from time to time with both. I'm currently having to have a third party graphics chip repair to the mainboard of my all singing all dancing 15" i7 Macbook Pro, that Apple are well aware as a generic fault with that model, but now refuse to fix it telling me I should bin it and buy a new one. Along with other serious issues I've had with Macs over the years, don't go telling me about the unassailable Apple gold standard, it's as much a myth as "Amy Winehouse single handedly changed the face of pop music" (Sara Cox, Radio 1).

The Lenovo U31 was obtained for ~£400 and though advertised as coming with 1TB storage, it actually came with 128GB SSD and an i5 core processor. It was also full HD too . So this gets a cold from me.

Would you like me to list up my personal experiences with John Lewis,

such as the time they paid me to return a faulty item,
oh and the £30 they just refunded me with no questions asked when I noticed the item I purchased a couple of weeks back had dropped in price,
oh and the £50 they refunded a week ago when extended warranty I purchased had been reduced.

If any of those situations had been with currys they would have done nothing.

Until John Lewis do me wrong I will continue to big them up and put down currys who I've had nothing but problems with over the years,until I found out John Lewis sold electricals and were so good.

As far as currys go I would be here all day explaining situations,but most of the time it's things like retuning faulty items is a nightmare as they never want to replace if faulty and always want to repair even if the to has cost you thousands of £'s and has only just been taken out the box.Or being called a lier when taking back a faulty vacuum and basically being told I broke it myself.And let's not forget they don't know what the hell they are selling.

Just one more example for you,went to currys about a tv (before I knew how good JL were) pointed out that JL were selling it for the same price but with longer warranty and asked if they could beat them in anyway,all I got was a flat out NO.i go next door to JL and say that currys selling to for same price and could they do anything to make me want to buy from JL,sales guy straight away says he will knock off £50,give me 3 years accidental damage cover for free.

Yes you are missing something, this is a different class of machine. This is a ultrabook class machine which is designed to be extremely thin and light with extremely long battery life. If you want something that you can easily carry around and that will last "all day" this is a perfect machine.

What you want is a gaming machine, this will be heavy, bulky and have very poor battery life but be far far better at running games.

Making a machine thin and light and powerful is expensive, a gaming machine can be cheaper even though it is more powerful at gaming because it sacrifices weight and battery life.

This laptop isn't for you.

It's a nice machine, but it was 799 on Black Friday from Zavvi Outlet, and is due for replacement in the next few months. Mind you, with the poor job Intel are doing with their processors these days there's probably not much to be gained from the new model. Unless they change the design.

The best thing anybody can do with a Macbook or Pro is to put in an SSD drive, upgrade the ram and away you go. I've got a Macbook late 2008. Running El Capital, 240ssd and 8 gig ram and it's a pleasure to use. Beware though, Apple will eventually make it impossible for such upgrades in the future by ensuring they build using their own parts making such upgrades impossible. Similar to the new Macbook air.

I'll be buying a Macbook pro before these new machines come on line...

If you just want to do gaming then a £250 games console easily gives the best value. You can not build a pc with the same experience anywhere near this price.

If you want to game on a Mac and it's best to install Boot Camp, so you have Windows for playing games on your Mac, and I OS X for everything else. Game are much running under Windows on a Mac.

I own one of these and use it for home use plus web design and programming. An incredible machine. No fancy graphics chipset so it won't die in a few years, needing a within 6 years free logic board replacement...
Nippy, usually silent, boots in seconds even after months of hard use and filled ssd!
128gb tiny usb 3 drives are around £30 from Sandisk too...
Highly recommended. Student discount from Apple if you're a student too.

I own PCs and a Mac Mini. I'd say it's not about the build quality it's about the amount of hardware that Apple makes and therefore the software/hardware integration is optimised more than it's possible with Windows.

Very interesting post. Still a risky punt to do it though. Just make sure that you scroll down and read the comments at the foot of the page to see that Apple do refute this. Can't say I would fancy my chances of taking them to court even if I could be bothered with the hassle.

can anyone confirm if the SSD in these devices is easily upgradeable?

or is it soldered on?

otherwise quality and size 13.3 os spot on for my needs

just upgraded a 3 year old hp i5 with a 500gb SSD and was ahocked at the improvement. obviously a fresh install of windows 10 and no bloat ware must've helped too.

It's extremely easy to remove. Finding one to replace it however, might be quite difficult.

I asked this question of a salesman in an Apple shop today. They aren't easily upgradeable as the SSD is fixed in. I believe there are tutorials on YouTube how to go about it. However as soon as you open the machine up you will be voiding the warranty that Apple offer (not sure where the John Lewis warranty sits on this) They can obviously remove and upgrade it for you but at a cost.

But you won't need a 3 year guarantee, because :

1) Apple stuff 'just works' with the aid of "magic".
2) Everyone who buys a Macbook is vastly superior to their peers, and therefore wouldn't possibly spill coffee on it or let their dog eat it etc etc - so you wouldn't need it for that either.
3) Everyone not covered by 2 such as professional types banging on about how much better a bit of proprietary software stuck over a normal laptop is, is still covered by 2).

So now that I've proved how it isn't, how is this deal better than the PC World deal?

Actually not a bad price for the spec... almost seems reasonable :o
Think the last time I said 'Apple' and 'reasonable' was when they offered to replace those ipods with the crap battery for a new gen model.
I paid £700ish for a spectre x360 about 6 months ago which is better in some ways like battery, touchscreen, tablet mode and weight and worse in others, like ram, screen and slower 5th gen i5, so if being on OSX is a must, this is a far less p*ss takey price.
