These OLED TV's have always been a risky deal to post on HUKD due to the high price and unfamiliarity with the technology.

However, with recent drops to £1,499, and then £1,399, the deals seem to be getting progressively hotter.

Perhaps £1,299 is far enough for most people or, maybe, we'll need them to fall to the sub-£1,000 bracket.

All I know is that this is an excellent deal for the successor to the 55EC930V, which would have set you back £2,999 in Currys last year.

Some people have been successful with price matches against this company with JL - others, not so much. It seems to be hit-and-miss these days.

A 1080p OLED TV is a very long term investment if it's a 55 inch you're going for. The quality of the picture will be immense and you'll find it difficult to notice a difference at normal viewing distances.

Besides, 1080p is out many years now and Sky still aren't broadcasting at the quality one would see in a Blu-Ray. I don't know why people seem to think that all their broadcasts are going to become 4K over the next 3-4 years.

It's a totally new type of TV - after CRT, plasma and LCD.

To try and put it simply, an LCD/LED TV works by lighting up the back of the screen, and then lots of tiny filters try to control that light as it emerges through to the front. However, it's very difficult to block the light and achieve satisfying blacks, because of that constant general illumination.

With an OLED TV, each individual pixel is self illuminating. This means you can have the brightest whites right next to pixels that are truly as black as they can possibly be, offering amazing levels of contrast. You also get other bonuses such as superfast response rates and better motion.

Easily, having seen OLED side by side at a demo LG had in Bluewater the difference between OLED and an ordinary backlit TV is far more impressive than the 4k v 1080p. Also it seems to get a 4k TV that can display 1080p well rules out the cheap 4k TV's and we are still years from 4k being mainstream

4K and HDR are gimmicks cooked up by LCD manufacturers. Instead of fixing the weaknesses in LCD panels (black level, viewing angles, uniformity motion, colour saturation) they are going for the absolute easiest and least necessary 'improvements' in order to sucker uninformed consumers. 4K in a 50" panel is technically easy and totally unnecessary.

Whereas OLED panel manufacturers are legitimately trying to improve in these much needed areas.

Think about this before you buy a 4K LCD set: the biggest and most expensive blockbusters this year - Jurassic Park, Star Wars - have 2K DIs. The digital master copy of the finished movie is barely more than 1080p (~10% higher res). They have all these millions of dollars to shoot the movie and they have decided that 2K is enough on a gigantic cinema screen. And you think you need it in your living room? Nope.

I have to disagree with all the UHD crowd. If you are in the market for a 55" TV with best picture quality available now, this is one of the few despite it being 'only' 1080p.

How long will it be before there is any real amount of high bit-rate UHD/4K content available?

I mean, look at the likes of Sky, they never even bothered with 1080p, and they still charge HD as an add-on for some packages! Blu-ray is going to be the only real means of getting great UHD/4K content until Netflix/Amazon strat upping there appalling quality streams.

That's true but I don't expect a large amount of content for a few years yet. They haven't announced full details yet but I expect it to be a couple of channels tops and at quite a hefty premium.

I'd prefer order a 1080p OLED at £950 cheaper than a 4K OLED and stick to not having to pay a premium for 4K content - especially when it's only a 55" screen.

If you decide to move to 4K in 2-3 years, the sales proceeds from the 1080p screen together with the £950 you save today and the premium sky subscription savings would buy you one hell of a screen.

The above is the best way to future proof and you will still have an excellent TV for the next few years - one that's likely to receive many comments from admiring friends and family.

in the 1080p oled v 4k tv debate . Would you buy 1080p oled if you going to buy a 4k blu ray player in the next 2 years ?
marathonic to TALON1973
22 Dec 15 1 #27
No, I'd probably go for a 4K OLED. However, unless the price of 4K Bluray players and disks very similar to the price of current Bluray players and disks, I wouldn't be buying 4K versions unless I had a 65 inch screen.

For me, it's all or nothing, i.e. go for a 65+ inch 4K OLED TV, a 4K Blu-Ray player and SkyQ or else go for a 55 inch 1080p OLED TV, a normal Blu-Ray player and SkyHD.

The above are the two options that don't have a weak link in the setup - there's no point paying extra for 4K equipment without paying extra for the 4K content but if you're doing all this with a 55 inch screen, then it's the screen size that's the weakest link in your system.

Well 4k content downscaled to 1080p is always going to look better than 1080p content scaled up to 4k.

I think those poking holes in this deal should realise the price of a 4K OLED will take years to hit sub £1300, I would imagine four to five years. These are silly prices at larger sizes as nothing else comes close quality wise, only a couple of manufacturers produce the screens and the Tech still hasn't been perfected. This to me beats any 4K LCD deal by far, it might hit a grand in sales next year but that's about it.

Personally, at a normal viewing distance I cant really tell the difference between 4K and 1080p - each to their own i guess, bragging rights and all that but i'd rather be bragging about the infinite contrast ratio on my 1080p OLED :sunglasses:

I know 4x HD doesn't exactly make ME soil myself in excitement. 8x - yes please. Blu-ray compared with dvd was "up to 7x" better - also a no-brainer - knew when I saw the tech demos in-store I just had to have it. Had to wait and save up of course but still had to get there eventually. :sunglasses:

I don't get the obsession with 4k. Seriously, who the hell is even broadcasting content at that resolution outside of BT Sport? Some HD channels still haven't moved up from 720p so we're a long way off it becoming mainstream. I'd say another five years at least and by then these manufacturers will be ramming 10k down our throats.

If 50" OLED TVs drop to £1,000 by next year I'm picking one up. It'll last me a good five years minimum before I decide to upgrade to an OLED 4k in 2021 or something.

What do we use the TV mostly for? for watching broadcast TV in my house and even after all these years I'm still waiting for the majority of channels to broadcast in HD and even the ones that are HD don't broadcast in 1080p. 4k in the short-medium term it's probably going to worsen your image quality compared to a (equivalent) 1080p panel (just as broadcast TV looked worse .

Don't get me wrong though, if people are considering spending £1.3k on a TV it's perfectly understandable they would want & expect every bell and whistle. But never the less just buy it as 1080p is all you're going to need for a LONG time then you can sell it on to people like me for £200 3-4yrs down the line

I have the 930v and its fantastic. Don't get sucked into the 4k hype more pixels don't a better picture make. Contrast is one of the most import factors with an image and OLEDs are rated as having an infinite contrast ratio (infinite only because the technology used to rate contrast ratios can't actually produce big enough numbers for OLED)
For what its worth I have worked in the AV industry for many years OLED is the future OLED 4k is nirvana

I've had the flat panel version of this (55EF950v) for just over three weeks and OLED is far superior in many ways to LED(LCD) although it still has its flaws. However, I would have been more than happy to have bought it if it was only a 1080p set if they had a flat version (not into curved myself but each to their own).

4K content does look stunning and I have Amazon Prime, Netflix and BT to provide 4K content but the vast majority of viewing is still either 1080i (1080p if blu-ray) or standard definition and 4K tv's do not handle standard definition that well!

To all you negative to LG, they are the only company that have managed to produce reliable OLED panels (Samsung tried and failed) and even the flagship Panasonic OLED has an LG panel driven by Panasonic components (at twice the price of the LG equivilent might I add).

ridiculous reply from John Lewis below on the price match front (if anyone has proof your request was accepted can you post it somewhere or pm me):

Thank you for your enquiry.

In order to apply a price reduction on a purchase, the criteria in our pricing policy must be met. I regret that after review the request you have submitted does not match all or parts of this policy.

In order to match a price request, the competitor must trade on the same basis as us, for example we will not match online only retailers, mail order only or show-rooms attached to internet-only orders.

Extracts from the Appliance Electronics website state:

“You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. The cost is estimated at a maximum of approximately £300”

“We reserve the right to charge a 15% handling fee on any goods returned as faulty after the first 14 days of delivery, Which are found to be in good working order before returning goods back to you.”

John Lewis differs in service conditions with this competitor as we offer returns at no cost.

Therefore, on this occasion I regret that I cannot match the price offered by Appliance Electronics. If you would like to view more information about Never Knowingly Undersold and our pricing you can do so on our website.

I am sorry I have not been able to reduce the price on this occasion. If you require any further information or assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Please note:-
I purchased the previous model (930v) from JL in April for £2,100 ----and I don`t begrudge 1 penny !
This TV has superb "black rendition " capability and the Smart program is a joy to use.
As regards no 4k (on the 910), one fanatic ran a test of a 4k Oled next to a 930v to see the difference , at "normal" viewing distances he could not see any difference.
Unlike LCD/ LED there is no fall off in contrast at all if viewing "off- centre". test this out physically in the Curry/PC world showroom with all the Makes at 55" and above.
The OLed screens are very expensive to make and the other major manufacturers are reluctant at the moment to go for these screens instead they are pushing 4K, (4K is not currently on general broadcast), with their LCD/LED in the hope that they will be able to resist having to re-model,(at this time).
Oled is not being pushed hard by the retailers(even those with 4K on them) as if sales were to take off it would probably lessen their sales of JVC, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic.etc.
Yes the prices will drop further if you wait - but if you want a cracking TV picture now, (especially Freeview HD channels) then purchase now.
Oled may go the way of Betamax at this rate , its just too good against some of the opposition .
A lot of TV owners have called time now on their Plasmas as they regard Oled as a very worthy replacement and improvement.

Saw the 930 with LG's demo material on it - blacks are definately black and whites were what they should be. Checked viewing at angles - there was no change to picture quality / colours. They salesperson tried selling a £900 4k set even when I stipulated I wasnt interested in 4k.. but there you go. I asked if they had access to normal sources - Sky etc but didnt get much of an answer. Next time I'll take my own pen drive. As previously mentioned although the 930 is curved as is the 910, its a gentle curve and not so noticeable if your paying attention to whats on screen. Unforunately the 910 cant be wall mounted according to the sales person.

well I'll try but I doubt they will do anything with that. It could easily have been just written by anyone. Thank you for trying but the case number would be needed - no one needs any of your details it's just the case number would prove they price matched AE

thank you

You can't see detail in dark scenes unless you have a good contrast ratio.

Oled is much better than 4k

24 Dec 15 #97
Thank goodness I still haven't replaced my Samsung q97 plasma.

The Sammy is still going strong, like most commentators on here though I am a fan of plasmas. I have a Sony w829 42 inch in the other room and the plasma still is better after 7 years.

Some good points. If oled 4k drops price bearing in mind that the tech hasn't kicked in then I will hold out. But if not I may just settle for a 1080p OLED.
trending1950
24 Dec 15 #98
yes that's why it's hard to justify an extra £950 for 4K, both have perfect black and infinite contrast

an infinite contrast range/ratio is in a different universe to whatever the new HDR gimmick brings (HDR will be pointless on lcd led tv's because their individual FALD zones cannot create perfect black)

If you are having a dilemma over OLED vs 4K then consider this. OLED will improve EVERYTHING you watch. 4K will only be of benefit for 4K content. What percentage of what you watch is available in 4K? If you decide to go 4K make sure the TV has HDCP 2.2 or you will be wasting your money.

Can the case number for John Lewis be posted please?

24 Dec 15 1 #102
I imagine that the other manufacturers are waiting to see how LG does with costs and reliability before they commit and when they do they'll no doubt be buying the OLED panels from LG. In the meantime other brands heavily promote 4K to compete or appear better than OLED. They need something new and UHD is it, for many at least, whether they really need it or not.

With TV manufacturers/consumer electronic companies it's always about making the customer want / desire the next best thing to keep them buying new products, regardless of whether the vast majority of buyers will actually benefit or see the improvements and with the price of these items being relatively cheap (we have more disposable income these days)

I'd say an OLED TV at this price is a mega hot deal...... if and when OLED 4K comes out at sensible prices, those that want one will just buy one, buying a TV these days is generally not a long term investment.
afroylnt
24 Dec 15 #103
I agree; that was my point - I would trade better colours, blacks & contrast for lower detail which I think you can only really see sitting close to a TV. I think 4k is mainly a marketing driven feature.....unless you have a very large screen..

Richer sounds price matched for me, but only on the one with the 5 year additional warranty:

http://www.applianceelectronics.co.uk/viewproduct.asp?pid=11573

They also offered the usual of beating it by £20 so £1449 delivered. Still a healthy saving over RRP. Not quite as good as a John Lewis Price Match though. That said John Lewis refused my price match with similar reasons to those that others have posted.

24 Dec 15 1 #106
With some simple ingenuity on the bottom fixings (cable ties ?) it certainly can.......check AVForums 930 thread......remember this is not a really heavy panel

I can't see how anyone managed to get John Lewis to price match - I have queried there times and everyone been given different excuses. if someone can post their case number then it will help others.

The 930 can be wall mounted but requires a special mount I would imagine the 910 fits the same mount

Very good price but outside what I can afford.
trending1950
24 Dec 15 3 #111
also people saying this is identical to the 930V are wrong. This is a 10 bit panel, can play future 4k files/stream 4K now (downscaled but will have a higher bitrate than the 1080p stream - basically will look better) and has the capability for ultra luminance which is LG's term for HDR

I almost got the 930V from Hughes at £1299 but this is why you have to do your homework. 910V is a lot better

JL Price Matched my Request yesterday. I don't want to post the case number since it's only valid for one order, and I haven't placed an order yet. But it is genuine.

I was actually amazed as it's the first price match request I've had approved by JL, and one of the least likely!
trending1950 to Furyous
24 Dec 15 #114
could you please post it after your order is confirmed then please?

I would of had no problem posting my case number as even if someone did try and use yours (rascals!) it wouldn't matter as it;s YOUR case number only valid for YOU

please post it I really want this TV
Dragon32
24 Dec 15 #113
Yes the old 42" 720p Hitachi LCD TV my friend gave me 6 years ago has prob got a couple more years left in it hopefully.

Why would I just go out and buy a TV when my current one is working fine and I don't really get to watch that much TV?
geowars2
24 Dec 15 #115
The 930v has been reduced to £1399 in John Lewis now.
http://www.johnlewis.com/lg-55ec930v-curved-oled-full-hd-3d-smart-tv-55-with-freeview-hd-2x-3d-glasses-and-2x-3d-clip-on-glasses/p1719631

I guess the advantages are it has a 5 year warranty, better sound (40w speakers vs 20w on the 910) and an extra hdmi port.

But... it seems the panel might be better in the 910v. (Some posts on Avforums are debating this)

I can't actually order from AE as they don't deliver to NI, so tempted to go for the 930, but then... I might wait and see there should be a few more details coming I imagine.
trending1950
24 Dec 15 #116
the 930V is 10% brighter if that matters but in every other category the 910V wins (10 bit panel too)
geowars2
24 Dec 15 #117
Oh and the 910 seems to have a faster processor and newer smart tv features too.

Just curious, do you have a source for the 10% brighter claim. I've been looking around for comparisons but I can't find much.

Although this is a bargain, I've decided I'd prefer to wait for the 950 to drop below £2k (4k and flat).

So, Case Number for the Price Match is 02783199.

Merry Christmas!

Also, is the stand pre attached to the tv? If not, is it easy to assemble for one person?

Can anyone tell me please, do you need a special wall mount for this TV? Thanks

yes it is a special wall mount and the rrp is £99 some people have had success using a cheaper samsung mount i think theres a video on youtube. i managed to find one on ebay us shipped for £60. I believe the offical mount model number is the lg osw100, this fits the 930v so check its the correct one for the 910v before ordering

right then so at first they replied with this: 'Appliance Electronics have much higher collection charges.
Every case we deal with is an individual case bases, and we don't compare cases. '

There was a lot more but that was the main part. I replied saying why should one get the price match and the other have it knowingly undersold and with a calm message that I was going to the media with this information

They replied with a price match for me so if you want this you need to quote that case number and ask them to stick to their own policy. Thank you very much

JL declined my price match so i used the case number from here. They still declined despite admitting they had approved others, so i escalated up the chain but still got a no. They definitely have some balls to admit they have approved it for other people but still decline for me ill give them that;
Thank you for your email to our Managing Director, Mr Andy Street regarding a price match that was refused for a LG 55EG910V television.

Mr Street has asked that I contact you on his behalf regarding this matter.

I can see from your email that a price match request was submitted by your colleague on 23 December 2015 requesting that we price match the above product with Appliance Electronics who are selling the item for £1299.00 including VAT. Due to human error, this price match was accepted erroneously which we honoured due to our mistake.

As per the response from my previous colleague, we would be unable to match this as Appliance Electronics’ service conditions are not comparable with our own and we would be unable to perpetuate this error by offering a further price match.

I understand you will feel disappointed by this response. It is always disappointing when we are unable to reach a conclusion which is satisfactory for our customers however occasionally this is unavoidable. I am sorry this has proven to be such an occasion and whilst I regret you remain dissatisfied, I believe we have responded fairly and appropriately to your concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Jamie Friery

the 1080 , 4k is all a nonsense. forget about it. 720P is all you need at 55" , I use it on a 90" projector and it looks amazing. granted Im using a CRT PJ. . OLED is like CRT , pixels can turn on / off fully. As for SKY nonsense, remember , they use heavily COMPRESSED video streams, yes, it might be 1080 , 4k , blah blah, but its a high compression image, which looks poor. 1080 and Blu ray is all you will ever need for 1st class video. and OLED is the best technology ever devised for a fixed panel video display. This TV is miles better than any 4k LCD/LED . there is no comparison. True high end quality, or pointless pixel counting. your choice
