I bought this TV (because of this deal) last November and have been really pleased with it. It's got great features and picture quality is excellent. A month or so ago I was watching telly and noticed the entire screen had a grainy effect across it. It was there in all apps and menus (therefore not the tv signal). I turned it off and back on and it was fine. Last night it came back but this time wouldn't go by turning the tv off and on. In the end I had to cut the power completely. When turned back on it was fine. I found a forum where people had similar problems on other models and said it got more and more frequent. Anyone else had this issue with this specific model? Did you get it repaired/replaced?

Yep loving the LG 49UF850V, picked mine up just before Xmas and the quality of picture is noticeable better over my previous LG 50PK 760 which I kept for 5yrs. I 'm playing content/ streaming through my Android MQX box and the upscalling of some SD content is really impressive..

I picked this up yesterday, gobsmacked by how good this is for the price! Loving web OS 2.0. Could do with more HDMI ports but not much of an issue once we figured CEC with our AV receiver.

One question - does anyone have an apple tv connected to theirs? I can't find it when i try to add it in universal control

They could well have the same panel (LG & Sony) in the 49". Who knows as it's still a panel lottery out there. LG describe their tv as having LG's unique IPS panel but they said that on my tv (and still do) and it's actually a VA panel by AU Optronics. Even manufacturers can lie, I mean make a mistake.

The Samsung is definitely not a £999.00 tv. What a joke price. I still thought it was a bit dear at £699.00 for what you get to be honest. It's not confirmed but is believed to only be a 60Hz panel where the LG and Sony are 100/120Hz panel. Personally I didn't like the Samsung and that was the tv I went to Currys to view. It was next to the LG 49UF770V which had taken my eye a few weeks before but after switching them all to BBC1, channel 1, 2, 3, 4 etc and then onto the HD channels I decided that the Sony was best for me. It didn't take me long to discount the Samsung. I liked the magic remote on the LG at my second viewing but the wife hated it. She's not too good with gadgets. I didn't like the remote on the Sony. Too small and very busy so in the end bought neither but still watching. I was very close to buying the Sony but will see what happens in Currys on Boxing Day.

If you want Youview why don't you buy a Huawei talktalk Youview box on ebay. I got one when I ditched sky 18 months ago. Its a good little box, model number dn370t. They also do a dn371t and dn372t. I also have a BT Yourview box, dtr-2100 made by Humax which I haven't tried yet. I am told this is far superior to the Huawei ones but have been happy with the box I got off ebay brand new for £60.00. The BT Humax one cost me about £85.00 new.

I've tried the 3D and to my untrained eye, it's fantastic. We tried the Disney Christmas Carol / Arthur Christmas and it was superb, no crosstalk issues that I could see. I've tested Avatar and that looks great too.

I've had almost a week now and still massively impressed. Haven't seen motion problems even with sports and fast paced films. Blacks could be blacker but that's common with IPS and a trade off for fantastic viewing angles. Yet to try 3D - anyone tried it out yet?

I looked at the Sony KD49X8309CBU, LG 49UF850V, Panasonic TX-50CX700B and Samsung UE50JU6800. I quickly discounted the Panasonic, which I was surprised about due to all the good reviews, as the picture was not as good as all the others. The LG and Sony were actually next to each other and there was very little between them, in fact a Sony sales guy used a demo of motion while panning to try and differentiate them but the difference was only slight. In fact I get the feeling the actual LCD panel was the same part on both!

The blacks on the Samsung were the best, partly due to the panel being a bit less reflective, and the colours a bit better overall. However, was it worth £350 more than the £650 LG? In the end I decided not, as what I really want is an OLED screen! So I took the LG as a stop gap until the prices of OLED come to a more reasonable price.

At home the refections from room lights can upset the blacks, so careful positioning is required but overall, after playing with all the settings, you can get quite a good picture. The motion handling of this model seems quite good and the Web OS 2.0 seems very speedy and stable. Although the set was manufactured in November there was still a software update to install and the Apps all seemed to need an update when selected. I plugged in a cheap USB hard disk drive and can now time shift and record TV programs so am quite impressed. Even the processing of SD material is quite good but the out of the box settings do need a bit of playing with to get the best results. I also noticed if you switch to a web streaming service you have to make separate settings for these.

It would have been nice to have Youview or Freeview Play but given those sets with these features have only just received the software to enable this function it may be no loss. Actually it could be better to have those functions in a separate twin tuner box so remote or via App program settings can be made (e.g. Panasonic DMR-PWT550EB).

Overall though it seems like a good buy for the money.

Take a look here - https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/178548/plex-for-lg-webos-2-0-tvs/p6 I believe it's not available for webos 2 as of yet. The alternative 3rd party app seems to work fine though. I couldn't find the Plex app for this TV so I am using PlayX (I think this is what it is called), cost about £5. This links up through Plex and picks up all my media ok. I use a separate amp and the audio seems to show ok DTS etc, I'd have to double check if DTS-HD comes through ok. I only use Plex on the TV for my 3D movies and Kodi through a media PC for everything else and this plays DTS-HD audio tracks fine.

Quite ironic that all these fancy options the manufacturers put on their tv's to help improve their mpi, pqi or whatever to create their fake refresh rates etc are actually a hinderance and all of the techs tell you to turn them off. I had some major issues with my LG 50LB650V not with fast motion but slow motion when watching quiz and game shows. The picture judders but you can only just notice it a little bit now. Some scenes look like they have been shot with a low definition camera like the dashcams have. This has put me off LG altogether and doubt I will buy another one of their sets

I used the link below to improve things which should be good for any LG. After I set everything as the link below I just altered the colour and brightness to my liking. It improved it a lot but I still get slow moving judder which is very very annoying.

Well I've reserved the LG. Thanks for all the comments guys. I love android on my LG phone, but I'm put off from the Sony by comments I've read about the volume of updates buyers are having to download on a frequent basis. I'm not sure whether these are mandatory but with my slow broadband I'm not going to chance it.
Smartguy1
6 Dec 15 #116
Yes I too have seen the forums and its a shame that a company such as Sony have released tv's that were not ready for the market or for the purpose intended. I has seen what they have done with Android on their phones and wasn't too impressed compared to how Samsung, LG and Motorola have taken the basic system and overlayed their own software. I have had all three phones but thought my mate's Sony experia was awful.

However I use a Youview box for on demand and catch up so if the android side didn't work too well I would still have the amazing screen quality that the Sony ships with. It looks like tv manufacturers are trying too hard to tempt us with all of these integrated features instead of concentrating on what really matters and that's picture quality. Everything else can be done via external sources. I desperately wanted a smart tv in January when I bought my LG. I don't use it. Using an android box with kodi is quicker than accessing any of the smart apps from my LG.

6 Dec 15 #112
Am glad yo are pleased with the tv. I nearly nearly bought it but I can't get 4k as broadband speed is slow so in SD I picked the SONY. Saying that £550.00 is an excellent price to pay and that would have been very tempting. WEBOS 2 is a massive improvement over WEBOS 1 which was like going back in time for me. So much so that I don't use the smart services on my tv at all.

6 Dec 15 #111
Set up mine today and must say I'm massively impressed so far. So much TV for £550 :-) WebOS 2.0 is really quick and I love the magic remote. Have already streamed 4k content and like what I see. Yet to check out 3D or bluray content on this.

6 Dec 15 #110
Most people can get Freeview HD and that's where 4k sets start to do a better job of upscaling. If you can only get SD channels stick with an HD set but if you have HD channels, bluray and want to use streaming options like Netflix it Amazon Prime I'd go 4k.
Smartguy1
6 Dec 15 #109
It doesn't upscale SD television any better than a 1080 tv. In fact after viewing this tv in Currys last Sunday I would say the picture quality is no better than my own LG 50LB650V and was no better than the current LGLF651V which was in the aisle in front of this tv. My tv cost me £499.99. You would be paying £150.00 more than I paid in January for a tv that will offer you no better quality than a 1080 model. The only difference on this tv is the WEBOS 2 is a lot faster than WEBOS 1 which is on mine. I still don't like it though and scrolling through the tv guide is awful. LG have ruined how easy it used to be to scroll through the tv guide and make adjustments in some of the picture setting. Go and try it yourself.

Last week the SONY KDL-50W8009 was next to the 770V which is the model below this one and was visibly a better picture on SD and there was no difference on HD of the Sony to UHD of the LG at 6 to 8 feet away. The Sony is now the same money as this LG, it was £100.00 less, but I like you cannot stream in 4K, I don't have sky either so 4k is of no use to me whatsoever. I put the Sony, LG 770v and the Samsung 50JU6800 on BBC1, channel 1 and 101 and the Sony was best.

I did however like the smart remote of the LG. Another thing that I noticed on my present and last LG is that LG's tuners appear to be a bit 'weak' in comparison to an external Youview box which I use. No doubt the upscaling via hdmi helps more as it's definitely a better picture when I am using the youview box.

If you watch a lot of SD television then neither. The Sony KDL-50W8009C is clearly better in SD than both tv's. The two tv's you mention and the Sony are all on the same row in my Currys and I set them all to BBC1, channel 1 and then BBC1, channel 101. Sony wins.

I have my 50" LG on a tv stand by Next. It's a beautiful stand with a couple of slots for dvd player, xbox etc and a couple of drawers to hide away the dvds, games etc. The best thing is though.......no visible wires. Had a few glass stands with cable management but you just can't beat a proper tv stand to hide all the wires. My stand will take a 55" tv.

Just wondered if anyone had a particular TV stand they would recommend. I wondered if folks generally went bigger eg. 1200mm so there was no chance of the TV falling off. Do you secure it too? I have a little boy so want to be careful it's not dangerous!
jonhitch
3 Dec 15 #97
Don't you mean no shorter than 1095mm?
Smartguy1
3 Dec 15 #96
The specifications on the Currys website state that the tv is 1095mm wide so you would need a tv stand no longer than 1095mm or 110cm if you prefer to use cm instead of mm.
jonhitch
2 Dec 15 #95
For those that have already received theirs what size stand would you recommend for this? I'm going from a 26" so need a new stand, but appreciate the TV stand is as wide as the TV. Is this true? If so would 110cm be okay or is it wise to go larger e.g. 120cm+?

Yes. I spent a while setting my channels up earlier and now have the ones I use in a favourite list. I also have a USB hard drive plugged in and the to recording works well too. LG have announced they are bringing freesat to their new and some existing TVs so hopefully this model will be one of them.

Don't forget it's an S2 tuner so HD as well. I tried once to try and set the channels up to my liking on the satellite tuner but after about 30 minutes and only getting about 10 done and setting it up to skip some channels I gave up. A shame really as I know it would cost LG to have set this up with a proper EPG but I would have paid more to have that facility. They have probably found it's not a selling point so haven't bothered. I can get as good a signal from the aerial tbh but it would have been nice to have those extra channels that are available on free to air satellite.

Its not under live tv on my LG. You have to enter the tv guide. In the top right hand corner there is a letter P. You have to highlight it, press ok, scroll down to satellite, click ok to access the satellite tuner. This is terrible. Looks like they might have changed it on the 2015 models or certainly on this model but on the 50LB650v I think they were having a laugh with the menu interface. Have a same year 585v (not Webos) and on that the satellite option is in inputs which is where it should be. The live tv option on mine is for aerial only.

To be honest I reserved this tv on Thursday along with a Sony and went along to Currys on Friday. Thought my wife would hate the magic remote. I didn't mind it but they should have shipped it with a standard remote also. I noticed that when accessing the tv guide it didn't show the current tv programme in a small screen like most tv's do. Not an issue if you have sky but I don't. I also thought the Sony was a better picture in SD as it was next to the UF770V. I know that's the model below but the UF770v seem to have similar characteristics to my own tv so I decided not to buy. Shame really as it is a good spec for the money and noticed that the ones in Currys all had LG IPS panels judging by the panel code and not the cheaper Che Mei ones. In HD the LG was perfect and couldn't fault the picture but with limited HD viewing for me at present SD is priority and the Sony was better, an inch bigger albeit not 4k.

I don't need a 4k tv. Sky in 4k when it happens will be expensive. I don't have or want Netflix and until such time as my broadband company decides to put fibre in my village then I am stuck with 5mbps download anyway. I will miss out on upscaling of 1080 but the HD channels I view now are faultless. 4k tv's will not upscale SD programmes any better than the 1080 tv's so I may just save £100.00 and buy the Sony.

I think the FTA tuner is worth them mentioning on the description. Yes the guide is a mess and you can only see now and next but it's good to use if your set top box is busy recording another channel or if you aren't fussed about guides etc. I also find it easy to find - it's located under Live TV.

My basic review.

Just bought this from PC World after seeing it on here. The first thing I noticed was the build quality and chrome finish, not a lightweight TV but an excellent build tv especially compared to my Samsung 6 series which now looks plasticy compared to this LG.
The set up was easy and fun. (yes fun). Ive never owned an LG but you get this little bird to guide you through the process ideal for newbies and linked my SKY remote with ease. I absolutely love the ' Wii' style remote which works well. The app functions work flawlessly. my Samsung Smart hub is Laggy but the LG hub is smooth and sort of Wii U esque (if you see what I mean)
Anyway when I first started watching TV I really didnt see much difference in quality to my Samsung 6 series in SD but as soon as I went onto ITV HD it comfirmed why this TV gets such great reviews. I tried out some of the APPS and tested a 4K Youtube wildlife video in 3D and I really then knew that was £650 well spent, the Ultra HD was vibrant, beautiful colours and excellent refresh rate, the sound was actually good too, boasted by technology by Harmon Karmon it was definitely one of the better TV sound systems Ive heard without owning a soundbar.

Overall Im well pleased with this purchase. At the minute I doubt you will get a better bargain at this price especially with the 5 yr Guarantee which is offered with it.

The satellite free to air tuner isn't really a decent feature on the tv as is probably the reason it is not mentioned on the website. The tuner works but as it is free to air it finds the channels in 'no particular order'. Also if say bbc1 transmits on more than one frequency the tuner picks them all up. When the tuner finds the channel it stores it even if it already stored. Consequently you have 20+ bbc 1 channels. The same with itv and other bbc channels. It stores the channels as it finds them so you could have bbc1 at channel 50 with some shipping channel at channel 1. It is awful and not really useable. You can change the channel numbers but this is very long winded.

Anybody wishing to use the satellite tuner for extra channels will be best using an old sky box.

Also accessing the satellite tuner isn't done under inputs as would be the normal route. It is done under programme guide and takes ages to find. This is a feature that LG would have been better to leave off unless you just want one or two channels which aren't available on freeview and you haven't got sky. Lots of indian television channels available though.

I did read however on a different site about the ability for some of LG's tv's to deliver full 4k due to it's pixel make up. I will see if I can find the link. Something to do with white pixels in addition to the standard red, green and blue.

Seriously thinking of this TV but we have matching furniture so cant change tv table but not sure stand will fit on it

Is there anyone who has this TV who could measure the stand at its widest points?

Thanks

I'd be interested to know this. Have mine ordered but not sure what to put it on!

27 Nov 15 #66
That was an interesting review. Let's hope they have made a few changes for the newer model. Looks like HD Test didn't like the UB850V. The UF850v has some excellent reviews on REVOO though from people who have bought the tv which is comforting.
Smartguy1
27 Nov 15 #64
Interesting point in the second reviews about 4k not that I am overly concerned but there are lots of people out there who seem that 4k has to be a must when searching for a new tv, even if at 49" you have to be sitting six feet or closer to the screen to benefit from at at this size. Quote from the link from as follows:

Connectivity comprises just three HDMI inputs, two of which support 4K 60Hz with HDCP 2.2 copy protection compliancy.

This means that when Ultra HD Blu-ray launches, or broadcast services begin, the set will be able to deliver 2160p resolution images. Without HDCP 2.2, screens will either display a down-rezzed version of the signal, or maybe nothing at all (companies are a little vague when it comes to specifics here, mainly because they don't actually know).

Note I am not wishing to disrespect the post as I have given it heat and it is a good price for the specification but it looks like the only true way to appreciate 4k is via streaming or by usb. I was seriously thinking of buying this tv but in the end decided against it and think I will just wait until Boxing Day. I am not a big fan of the webos system and the new LG menu systems which have frustrated me for the last 10 months but was willing to cast that aside as the tv does offer excellent value, especially with a 5 year guarantee. I just know my wife would end up throwing the magic remote at the tv.

this tv has only 100hz. would that be a problem? also can't find out if its hdr which uhd blu ray will use?
Smartguy1
27 Nov 15 #58
Reserved one yesterday. Decided not to buy today. Although the picture quality on the LG usb stick was very good on the UF850 the UF770 was on display on Currys television loop. There was nothing particularly wrong with the picture but on SD it was no better than my current LG and was not as good as the Sony next to it which was on the bbc 1 channel. Seeing as I watch most of my tv on SD channels I will give the tv a miss. It is a nice tv and have given heat for the price but for me with only 10% of my viewing being in HD the Sony was the better buy. Also further upscaling to SD channels in comparison with 1080 tv's is not relevant.

Its a bit of a dark art comparing the us model numbers with the eu ones. Some are identical, some have a similar number and are nothing alike! rtings.com did have a page which showed you 2015 models and both sets of model numbers but I cant find it anymore.. I bet there are plenty of reviews for this model in the UK though.

Are you saying that this TV will do HDR?
bluestreak56
27 Nov 15 1 #40
Primarily refresh rate, but yes overall picture quality. The linked 680V is the entry level model of the 4K LG sets vs the 850V which is the top of the range in this size class (48-50"). Thats not to say the picture quality on the 640/680V will be bad or much less than the 850V but more than the 850V has much more additional functionality (HDR, 3D, magic remote, etc, etc) I did a u-turn on the 850V at £650 as I dont need said functionalities the 640V at £499 was what I needed as so purchased.
dennoli89
27 Nov 15 #39
its hot quick the tv processes changes in the picture so if you watch sports or fast paced movies the 3d one will process the images quicker which would be expected considering its offering 3D
IanBealfan2015
27 Nov 15 #38
The 49UF850V has a PMI of 1600, vs only 1000 on the 49UF680V.

Isn't that LG's own measurement of how good the picture is?
