10 Dec 15 3 #14
I'd say considering the spec, even though it's an i7-4510U this is still very hot for the money. The i7-4510U is still a high-mid range CPU and the rest of the laptops spec reflects that, also full HD screen. Hot.
Virtute
10 Dec 15 1 #15
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html It is by no means a bad CPU - it is closer to a higher end i5 in terms of power, but this is also a low power consumption i7 meant for ultrabooks.

somebody asked for a better deal, here it is in my opinion:

http://www.johnlewis.com/asus-x555la-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-black/p2307189

ok, doesn't have the dedicated graohics processor, only really useful for hardcore gamers, or the 8gb ssd, only really speeds up boot, but an alround better cpu, lenovo does not seem to have a particularly good build reputation whereas asus are probably middle of the road, i would look more closely at battery life and screen quality before deciding, yes they are both fhd, but are the tn, (bad), or ips, (good)
mrrog
10 Dec 15 1 #19
and heres another better deal in my opinion, again has a better cpu, though not as good as the asus above, and has the 8gb ssd, though no dedicated graphics processor, and of course is cheaper

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B016B90WR4?tag=hotukdeals03-21

in my opinion the most important thing to look at is the cpu, very difficult to upgrade, gpu not so difficult, then the screen quality, again probably stuck with it for the life of the device, next ram, usually easily upgradable but can be 50-100 quid, finally storage, cheap, easily upgradeable, many cheap alternatives, cloud, flash drive, etc, but dont forget battery life, if your going to want to use without mains power for a length of time this is crucial, and ad with car fuel consumption, take the manufacturers claims with a big pinch of salt
bigbaz

krisward7955
10 Dec 15 #21

mrrog
10 Dec 15 #22
here are, in my opinion two good sites for comparing cpu's and gpu's, the first on for overall ranking, and the second for a more detailed vs a vs comparison:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

http://www.game-debate.com/cpu/index.php?pid=2392&pid2=2281&compare=core-i5-6200u-2-3ghz-vs-core-i5-5200u-2-2ghz

both sites have data for cpu and gpu, the second one allows you to compare cpu and gpu combinations, though its worth bearing in mind the specs might be great but the overall build of the device might limit the performance, computers and their components are commodity driven, and will often be put together based on availability and cheapness of components, not necessarily optimised for compatibility and performance

You really think that losing dedicated graphics is worth a marginally better CPU?

10 Dec 15 #25
Surely this i7 has to be better than any i5?
mrrog to dreamz
10 Dec 15 #31
no, i7 does not guarantee its better, the i5-4210m is better thsn this cpu, i.e. a fourth generation i5 is better thsn a fifth generation i7, the clue is in the 'u' suffix, this stands for 'ultra low voltage' so yes better if you want cheapness to run but not necessarily better for performance, simply does not have the power running through it

incidentally, medion are still building machines with the 4210m cpu, good grunt and fairly cheap, unfortunately use low res screens though
dreamz
10 Dec 15 #26
Has anyone got this laptop? Is it a good build?
mrrog
10 Dec 15 #27
i would happily lose the gpu for a better cpu because i am not a hardcore gamer, it will add very little to my experience of the machine, if you want to play the latest games at the highest res possible go with the lenovo

as far as the acer is concerned it says full hd in the description, i agree the specs list is non specific though

several years ago i bought a touchscreen windows device, never again for me, 1. have no use for it, did run android under bluestacks for a while but quickly got fed up
2. i also hate fingerprints
3. the touchscreen i have is an overlay to the actual screen so makes the display seem a little further away, though maybe the latest screens are more like smartphones and tablets, and i think this is probably the key usecase to a windows laptop touchscreen, if its a 2 in 1 device that doubles as a tablet then fine, otherwise having to stretch your arm to the touchscreen when used with a keyboard is a pain, i very quickly reverted ti touchpad and mouse

Virtute
10 Dec 15 2 #39
Because you're saying it's a better deal, I'd assume if you're trying to suggest better laptops for similar money they would be better laptops. The processors really aren't that much better than the i7 in the OP according to benchmarks. Getting an exact screen resolution number also helps get past the marketing slang of what counts as "full" HD in that instance, as it appears to be 1366 x 768 on other sources. I just see a lot of speculation and I think it's unfair to paint those laptops as objectively better deals when they aren't.

The processor in the OP isn't a bad processor, it's an ultrabook processor - that delivers comparatively good performance for the power it's using. When you're buying a laptop surely battery life savings and lower generated heat are decent factors to consider?

I’m in the market for a replacement PC, basically to cover internet use, MS office suit work some photo editing and light video editing, no gaming. But having got used to an IPad I want something with a fairly fast response time, a decent screen and reasonable battery life (say 4 hours on general use).

Ignoring the price differential how does the spec on the above deal compare with the one below in terms of meeting my requirements?

http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/lenovo/u-series/u41/

I realise the screen size is different. I’m not bothered about touch screen features.

still haven't got a clue why you don't accept this is fhd according to the normally accepted fhd resolution measurements, it says it on amazon description and the company blurb clearly says its an option, who cares what you have seen elsewhere, only you, accept the link I gave as the link to the suggested better machine

I clearly gave it as a better machine in my opinion with reasons, they remain valid despite your alternative opinion, the only one trying to be objective here is you, as with most tech objectivity when a diverse set of considerations are involved is impossible, allow people their subjective opinions so long as clearly marked as such with reasons

The GPU is the single most important factor for gaming. the 820m is poor, but way better than a intel hd XXXX. It is very difficult to find a cheap new gaming capable laptop. Often you can get far better performance buying previous generation top of the line laptops second hand than new. Also owners tend to take better care and implement every possible upgrade before selling, so personally as a cost conscious shopper I look to ebay and online forums for my notebook needs.
Anthonis to pezkai
10 Dec 15 #56
Why not go for desktop gaming wise? If you do go for laptop then rules are simple:
Always buy best possible dedicated GPU with plenty ram in it.(compare benchmarks)
Then next is CPU i5 or i7 with turbo boost (compare benchmarks) Go for full mobile version of i5, i7 can be low power if it outperforms full i5. CPU is not doing a lot in gaming anyway...
Then consider if you need high res screen?
All rest like ram, hdd, wifi, battery I would not care as you will swap them out anyway... SSD drives and ram memory are cheap enough these days so later you can upgrade for some decent stuff because p reinstalled stuff will be crap anyways .
Remember most important is GPU with its dedicated ram memory as this item does all gaming work and is not upgradeable later... Where CPU, RAM, HDD, Wifi can be upgraded most of the times and even cheaper than buying full spec laptop outright.
Good luck.

This is a wee bit out of the £600 budget (by £70), but the CPU & GPU are both a little better. The 15" is £10 more.

I bought this laptop about a month ago and have been happy with it. I'm not a big gamer or computer tech, but for me it performs much better than the Dell Inspiron 1545 I've upgraded from (yes I know that's a far older machine & older processor etc etc etc). It's quick & easy to use and copes with me having multiple graphics based programmes operating - which my old one didn't.

Battery life is fine. Not amazing, but laptops don't seem to be these days. I've not timed it, but I've not found it annoyingly slow.

The one thing I would say is I find the screen a little fuzzy at times. I think this is just me as anyone else who looks at it says it's perfectly clear, so I'm guessing it's something to do with my eyesight.

My computer tech friend recommended this to me as a good purchase with good specs for the price paid. another of his friends (who is more computer savvy than me) also bought one at the same time.

stonetrap
10 Dec 15 #61
I've got the Z50 with identical specs to this. For the price it's acceptable, it's best considered a high-end office browsing machine.
I wanted something with a FHD screen, the brightness and contrast are fine, maybe good for a TN. The viewing angles are terrible. Absolutely terrible.
There's a uefi whitelist for some of the hardware so upgrading that poor wifi card is out of the question unless you're particularly technically minded (hardware eeprom writer).
The build quality isn't wonderful but it's not awful either. Some parts feel flimsy, and the silver finish on the back of the screen had worn badly in a couple of months just from being taken in and out of a laptop bag.
The GPU is a waste of time frankly. CSGO is barely playable with min settings at 720p so don't expect to play any A+ titles from the last year or two.
A single USB3 is a shame, but usually workable.

Not voting either way as for some people it's not a bad buy but I know I won't be buying lenovo again after this.

In the same sort of price range I'd consider something like this laptop from pcspecialist. The 6th gen i3 is about as capable as THIS 4th gen i7. The better battery, GPU and screen would make it a winner for me. Even if it is an extra £30 to have the 8GB RAM and 1TB hd.

I am certainly no expert but according to the net "The performance of the R7-M360 is slightly above the slower clocked Radeon R7 M260 (64-bit model) and silimar to a GeForce 920M."

It's certainly better (and newer) than what was advertised. I don't know how much difference it will make. Could you tell what the processor and graphics card were without opening the box?

EDIT : According to these user benchmarks it looks like the AMD is significantly better being ranked 65th out of 500 for speed compared to 234th for the GeForce. I certainly hope mine is shipped with what you got.
