pretty decent deal actually, 1920 x 1080 is a welcome addition. low power i5 (i5-5200u) but should be fine for general use but an SSD would be a useful addition, should be fairly cheap to add one. heat

There's two on the website. ...look the same but one has a hybrid drive.
Is that the only difference? Surely that is the better option? Am i missing something?
Looks like a seriously good bargain, and nice and stylish too.
Core i5 (dual core plus hyperthreading, though not to confuse with a desktop-class quad core).
1.5kg - this will feel light in the hand.
A 1TB hard drive, though with 8GB of flash, so will feel faster than a crappy 5400 standard hard drive in regular windows use (though of course file transfer is going to be slow).
One of the best laptop deals i've seen this week, if you value portability and design as well as function.

The 1TB + 8GB SSD is the same price £399.00. Links see M to take you to Very homepage. Just type in Lenovo u31 in the search menu.
Seems a scorching price!
Also, keep in mind this is NON-TOUCHSCREEN according to the very website.

Wow, I've been looking into smaller netbooks / laptops the last week or so. 11-13" was a must, but I couldn't really find a suitably priced machine in that size that actually had some umpf behind it too, at this price I just have to bite. That size and specs is amazing for the price. Thank you very much OP.
essentially you just click the credit account option at checkout, then setup your very account to that (it's not a proper credit check, just a very fast informal process), then you can use that code. It took less than 30 seconds to do, a couple of minor options to pick. Also then you have the option to pay within 3 months interest free. So if you want to get this but can't afford it with xmas, you could pay it off (369.99) + a couple quid for delivery in full in January/February with no interest. The minimum payment is covered by the £30 off coupon, it's applied as a payment made to your account. Loophole much. So either pay it off by credit/debit card on your very account at 124.66 a month, whenever you want to make a payment. Or pay it all off at once by card (373.98) as soon as order has gone through. Or wait a month, two months etc to pay in full. Very flexible.
I've been waiting for a while now to get a new 13 Inch laptop.
Almost bought the Asus Zenbook UX305 (a great little machine) when it went to £500, but decided to wait for the new versions (which should be around £600 when they hit the shops).
But this Lenovo is an absolute steal at £400 and the small amount of reviews I could find (e.g. http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbPbXu7qVx4) suggest it's a good bit of kit.
I'm hoping that my TopCashBack New Account 10.5% cashback will track saving another £40.
I've always been suspicious of VERY as a company, but decided to try them out and used the Buy Now Pay Later, so don't even have to pay for the laptop for 12 months (interest free).
Crossing my fingers that all the deals work as hoped and the laptop is as good as it looks.
Big thanks to the OP for the post!!
Cheers, Derek

Essentially the same, same CPU, same hybrid HDD, same RAM. Form factor separates them. Considering that one is bigger in size and costs MORE, it just makes this one look even more of a steal, especially with the extra £30 off.
I've just noticed the other one is not full hd 1920 x 1080. Only 1366 x 768. So, overall that's a lesser machine.

I'm a bit confused, I haven't ordered this laptop but I've been set up with a Very account with £300 credit.
Does this mean that I've got a loan and will need to make repayments on this £300 or will I only have to pay them back once I buy things from the website?
Thanks for the help
dezontk to joewarne
29 Nov 15#43
300 credit just means they will allow you to spend that much on them, without requiring full payment right now. Mine went to £600.
If you pay straight away (give it a few hours to update in your account) then theres no interest. Or even if you do the 3 months option, you won't have to pay anything straight away as long as it's all paid off within 3 months. Anything remaining after 3 months you'll incur small amounts of interest on. It's worth doing for the £30 voucher, no hassle. I paid mine off straight away (370 something in total), closer to xmas I may be wishing I'd waited until January!
As you can see the £30 off is applied as credit paid back, as though you've paid 30 back yourself. Then at any time you can log into your very account and pay it back bit by bit or all at once. £124 or so a month for 3 months. Or £50 every week. However you wish, it simply asks how much you wan't to pay back of the total remaining (370ish) and what card you want to use.

I think you missed the point of ultrabook.
Good Ultrabooks can do a whole day of work outside without charging. They can be used just as a normal laptop. But they are suit more for people travelling business trips, commute and make best use of their time. That is why Ultrabook tend to be more expensive as they need to be slim, lightweight and use components with low battery consumption to preserve battery life which is another reason why they are normally not powerful. By being not powerful, less heat, no fan, less noise and lower power consumption again.
Like XPS 13, if you open its cover, almost half of it is a big battery which is why it can last around 10 hours use. Everything else are all closely put together on the other half of space

I ordered this on Friday and it arrived today. Suspicions in this thread were correct, it is actually the red model with a 128GB SSD. Gutted. I can deal with a smaller SSD, it's easy enough to swap out for a larger SSHD, but there's nothing I can do about the red casing. I imagine I'll be sending mine back. Might see if they'll exchange it for the other Lenovo u31 listed (which was also £400 when I placed my order).

Well mine has turned up this morning.... 128gb SSD.... Don't know about the colour as I'm at work and the Mrs just read the label to me over the phone.
Don't know whether to move my 250gb Samsung SSD to it from the laptop I'll be selling and use the external 1tb like I have been doing or send it back. Ideally I wanted what I'd ordered so all my data was all in the same place!

2 Dec 151#90
Well there are quite a few people out there that are going to get the wrong one and if say half of those took a small offer in exchange to keeping them then it might make sense is what I'm thinking.
I had a fridge from them last year that had a dent in it, they offered me 10% to keep it, a refund or a replacement so who knows?
Half is an assumption by the way, I'm just thinking if they gave me around 10% off I'd keep mine

2 Dec 15#91
I was told by them on the phone they would not be able to replace this one with a white one as none in stock, although I'm not entirely sure she understood that the model number was what differed from the listing page, so infact she may have been referring to the incorrect page again. Anyway I guess I'm going to keep this, 370ish is too cheap to get too upset about colour, was expecting some kind of gesture after I explained I would then rather keep this wrongly described laptop, but to no avail.

That's the one I bought and I suspect most did, It arrives as the red one with a 128GB SSD.
I was wondering that also, I don't know about Very (I suspect they wouldn't like it) but I did find a thread on Lenovo's forums where somebody asked the same, the answer was in theory it would invalidate it but doubtful Lenovo would mind as they expect people to upgrade them....
It's quite a nice machine actually and it does look quite nice in red, has a red aluminium lid and a dark brushed aluminium palmrest/keyboard surround. The screen bezel is black plastic and the bottom is red plastic.
Nice screen (although not as colourful as my 6 year old Samsung) quite nippy. Have taken an copy of the SSD ready to swap it out if Very offer me an incentive to keep it, I have a 250gb Samsung EVO 850 ready to go in if they do.

I just checked on the status of my order and looks like Very has cancelled it, saying "no longer available"! I was fully expecting the red 128 ssd, as I ordered the 1tb+8gb hybrid, and would have kept it too. But looks like I don't even get that now. Gonna have to call them up to see what's up, but I suspect I have no grounds as they are within their rights to just cancel the order.
Not sure if I should get the pure 1TB offering, as it is still on the site for £399? Anyone think that is still worth it, I can still use the £30 discount I guess?

So I have no idea what I'll get, (if anything, as they might cancel this second order of mine!)
Has anyone actually received this other version? Is it red 128gb also?

6 Dec 15#114
Just to add my two cents,
I too ordered one of these, already knowing that it most likely wasn't white or the right ssd. I felt like it was a great deal anyway and went for it.
Only to receive no notification that my order had been cancelled, finding out instead the day before the due delivery date by an email from PayPal saying I'd received a refund.
I'd waited all year for the Black Friday/cyber Monday sales to purchase a laptop, only to be let down by very.co.uk with little warning and now I have no chance of getting a deal like that again for the foreseeable future. I'm leaving the country in the new year for a good portion of time and this laptop was to use during my trip. Now I most likely won't have time to find a deal like that in the time I have left.
Also hearing how people want to send theirs back and very.co.uk won't accept it. Whilst I was one of the unlucky ones that got nothing and would've been find with the white or red, hybrid or ssd is pretty disappointing. Oh well, what can you do? Even if they agreed to price match it for me when they get stock I won't be around to take advantage. Sucks.

Guess it depends on your viewpoint. Whether you prefer the SSD but can live with the smaller capacity and colour, or like the larger capacity of the hybrid drive but compromised hard drive speed.
For me, the increased disk space and colour are plus points. I've not noticed any speed problems, as the 8GB internal flash seems good enough for this price point. Plus hybrid drive of 1TB+8GB is more expensive than a 128GB SSD, so in terms of value, it is better too.
I'm gonna update to Windows 10 tonight, as it came with 8.1. Hopefully, this should give me speed improvements too.

windows 10 was installed on the red one I got, arguably I think you get around £10-20 more for your money with the hybrid version as those cost about £10-20 more than a 128SSD and I think the white ones are a more desirable colour.

Hi there, I hadn't opened my parcel until I saw this and now I have found I have the red one and the 128gb ssd. Not too bothered about the colour but checking that the 128gb ssd will be ok. I specifically ordered the white one due to the 1TB storage however I asked a friend who works in IT and he said he would rather have the 128ssd any day due to speed and just get a portable external hard drive.
What does everyone think? This is a pressie for my husband so can't really ask him. Doesn't look like very are offering the U31 in any guises now anyway.

The real issue is that if you don't keep it, then you are stuck. At best you will get your money back, and Very "Promise" to give you the same deal once the white one is back in stock. Good luck there.
I would keep it if I were you, it's still a stonking deal, and really it is being picky tbh.
It's worth calling up Very and complaining, as others got 10% off for the mistake. But be prepared to wait in a long phone queue.
I got the non 128SSD and it is absolutely fine for casual use. So long as you hubby is not a games designer, code programmer or visual effects guru, then I think he will be fine.

i have got 1TB white one. I was hoping that SSD version would get back in stock, so I have not opened the box yet, it is still returnable. I am happy to swap for the red 128gb SSD version.

I think dabs have the 128ssd for £29. Get a hdd enclosure for the 1tb hdd. Best of both worlds.

128ssd is fine for every day use. If he is going to need storage for lots of pics and downloading, then you will need an external hdd or save to the cloud.
Alternatively someone offered a swap on this thread.
I have a hybrid drive on my old laptop and from my experience its still sluggish like a regular hdd.

I've just ordered a 2tb portable Seagate slim external drive which looks nice and small so hopefully this will be ok!

Just noticed that very are offering a chance to win one of the u31 White hybrid drive laptops on their Facebook page. As someone that was told they wouldn't be sending me one and would have to be happy with a refund as they have no stock I'm not ashamed to say it **** me off.

If you want to run photoshop then you might consider looking for something with a larger screen and dedicated graphics... It'll most likely cost you a bit more though.
Is that the only difference? Surely that is the better option? Am i missing something?
Core i5 (dual core plus hyperthreading, though not to confuse with a desktop-class quad core).
1.5kg - this will feel light in the hand.
A 1TB hard drive, though with 8GB of flash, so will feel faster than a crappy 5400 standard hard drive in regular windows use (though of course file transfer is going to be slow).
One of the best laptop deals i've seen this week, if you value portability and design as well as function.
Seems a scorching price!
Also, keep in mind this is NON-TOUCHSCREEN according to the very website.
Think it would be wise to check some reviews on it. But for the money it seems solid!
How do you edit a comment on the app?
Hard Drive Storage: 120 GB
wonder which it is..?
Also got another £30 off using this code.

essentially you just click the credit account option at checkout, then setup your very account to that (it's not a proper credit check, just a very fast informal process), then you can use that code.

Wondering if there is much benefit for the higher spec, it's just for browsing, Microsoft suit work some picture editing and limited video editing.
I've just noticed the other one is not full hd 1920 x 1080. Only 1366 x 768. So, overall that's a lesser machine.
Buy it now.

I'd want to stick an ssd in mines
Does this mean that I've got a loan and will need to make repayments on this £300 or will I only have to pay them back once I buy things from the website?
Thanks for the help
Or have I effectively taken a loan from them where I have to pay them £300 back whatever happens?
just couldn't complete transaction.
Prefer the UX305 so hoping it drops to £400 in January. I can wait. My 7 year old Acer struggling on with Windows 10
When you search on the MPN: 80M500C7UK number it comes back as this spec on lambda-tek.com
Lenovo U31 I5-5200U 8GB 128GB SSD W10
So is it the 128GB SSD or 1Tb+8Gb Hybrid Storage?
Although what's better the smaller ssd or larger 1tb hard drive hybrid ?
Any clue as to why it works for some and not others?

Don't know whether to move my 250gb Samsung SSD to it from the laptop I'll be selling and use the external 1tb like I have been doing or send it back. Ideally I wanted what I'd ordered so all my data was all in the same place!
Anyway, I said there appears to be a lot of these that have arrived wrong and to "save them the cost and hassle if a return what can they offer me to keep it"
They will phone me back LOL
I had a fridge from them last year that had a dent in it, they offered me 10% to keep it, a refund or a replacement so who knows?
Half is an assumption by the way, I'm just thinking if they gave me around 10% off I'd keep mine
Not sure if I should get the pure 1TB offering, as it is still on the site for £399? Anyone think that is still worth it, I can still use the £30 discount I guess?
So there is a chance that this is the actual hybrid version.
Having said that, if you google the MPN: 59444458, you will find this:
https://www.lambda-tek.com/Lenovo-59444458~sh/B2109197
which is a
Y50 I7-4720HQ 16GB 1TB SSHD BLACK
So I have no idea what I'll get, (if anything, as they might cancel this second order of mine!)
Has anyone actually received this other version? Is it red 128gb also?
** As an aside note, the site did not let me use the £30 code for my second order, even though the first order I used it on was cancelled. I will call them up later to try to get this code reinstated for my second order I think **
Time will tell if I actually get the second order dispatched.
Paid in full not on account - and they charged card surely that's a breach of contract isn't it ?
I had got then to agree to reduce down to price match the previous price, was showing in stock then and told delivery in 11th Dec
Now showing also not avail on my account. Waiting for customer service call back after all the faff
I ordered the U31 in white but been sent the U31 in bright RED and am struggling to get Very to authorise a return as I opened the box.
So annoyed with Very customer service.
Please let me know if you have also been sent the wrong model.
Sucks.
so am quite happy now, even though it was a round about way to get here!
I then downloaded all the latest windows 10 bios, drivers and software from Lenovo and they also all updated OK.
Don't bother with the Display brightness registry update as it makes the display very dim by default.
I downloaded the latest Chipset, rapid storage technology and HD display drivers direct from Intel.
What does everyone think? This is a pressie for my husband so can't really ask him. Doesn't look like very are offering the U31 in any guises now anyway.
