This set is showing as Hard to Find / Retiring Soon on the Lego site, and Smyths have it with £30 off. This may be your last chance to grab a bargain before prices go silly.

Now out of stock online, but still available to click and collect.

Has this turned into an argument about who is allowed to buy Lego as an investment?

I'm curious where the dividing line is that makes some people a lowlife and others not.

I'm tempted as I've wanted this for awhile but turned down the chance of buying it when cheaper (albeit slightly £127). The fact they are retiring this makes me want to jump, but I bought a Sonos Play:3 yesterday lol.... I hate this site at times.

They only surge in price once they are discontinued.
If you look at the last modular building to be dropped, within twelve months it had tripled in price.

This is not me having a moan. Repeat: This is not me having a moan.

Now can someone explain to me how a Lego car is considered a bargain at £130?
Dr Zoidberg to schnide
10 Dec 15 #19
Because the normal price for this Lego car is £160, so if you wanted to buy it to keep, it's as cheap as it's been and as it's being retired you won't be able to get it at all new before long.
Lego sets usually rise in value once they are retired, and this is expected to do the same, so there's a chance of a large profit within 12 months if you want to sell it.

It was about 6 months ago I saw on this site, £15 (can quadruple into days out) of tesco vouchers if you spend £75 on lego. I thought "hey why not, £75 worth of lego for £15?! A steal.
I'd never bought lego models before, "it's overpriced!!" I thought. The 3 star wars models I bought were meant for Xmas presents, and I built them one by one that night.

Ultimately, this site has cost me £1000s in deals. But lego? This is gonna cost me much more over the years.

I want, I want, I want.

The Lego Town hall was about £120 when it was retired in December 2014. These are the completed listings on ebay

The most extreme examples are some of the bigger Star Wars sets which have gone from around £250-300 to more than ten times that.

Yep, not everything is a good investment. As a rule of thumb, it helps if it's a £100 or more set from one of the better known themes like Star Wars. It needs to be a good looking model that appeals to adult fans with nerdy tendencies, and if it's had a short lifespan like this has, so much the better.

Lego Delorean. Selling on Ebay for 100-120 unopened, was only 35 new.
Crustybeaver
10 Dec 15 #55
The prices you are quoting are inaccurate. Firstly it retailed for £350, secondly the highest UK sold prices are at the top end £3500. Quoting the holy grail of sets as an example of inflation is a deceptive example. Back in 2007 investing wasn't commonplace and sets from that era can garner a high premium. Now the profits are more difficult to come by because the market is getting saturated with QFLL's.

2pacslilhomie to Crustybeaver
11 Dec 15 1 #61
Hahaha. Is that really your best? You're behaviour is some what illogical. Someone who buys and sells for a quick profit is a lowlife, but someone who holds on to it for a while before selling is somehow 'honourable?' And not a lowlife? You really are messed up. BTW I don't do the reselling thing, it would only make me bitter and twisted like you.

11 Dec 15 #63
It's ironic that people come on here to preach about the glories of Lego reselling quoting the most lucrative of deals as examples of all pastures green, just to go on and sell products as a QFLL for small profits a week later. Funny how paying taxes on earnings, fees and competition never seem to work themselves into the conversation.
Dr Zoidberg
11 Dec 15 3 #64

jonnyh132
11 Dec 15 #65
This is ridiculous. It's a great deal, selling it on or not!

They go for £160 upwards so you are already looking at a good 20% profit before you even walk out the shop and that's the point.
Crustybeaver to jonnyh132
11 Dec 15 #66
I guess you chose to gloss over selling fees, tax and shipping then.
jonnyh132
11 Dec 15 #68
Well we aren't all morons who can't work out how selling the odd item works. Firstly you don't pay tax on selling items like this unless you are a buisness(or sell £1000s worth a year), and seller fees don't exist if you sell on a free site (you are obviously a ebay drone, moaning of shipping and fees)

Christ you just hate the fact someone else may have a better idea at something than you. Like explained before, go and see the lego delorean, well over £100 now but we're 1/4 of the price on release. It's there in English to read the history of pricing but idiots like you are too stupid to listen to others.

Generally you are are probably the person who doesn't understand a bargain when you see one.

TabbyBoy
11 Dec 15 #72
jonnyh132 really hasn't got a clue and his/her/its attitude towards other HKUD members is well out of order. Paying tax on an item sold with the intention of making a profit is MANDATORY, there is no excuse. eBay are within their rights to report sellers to HMRC which has happened on occasion. I got rumbled in 2010 and had to pay a £2,500 fine for tax avoidance. With the fees, risk, **** buyers requesting perfect boxes, timewasters with returns, careless couriers and tax.... it's not really worth reselling LEGO anymore. The days of sets reaching 3x RRP when it was worthwhile are now long gone. LEGO are also planning to launch their "LEGO Again" website in 2016 where any retired set can be obtained at RRP (instructions included but, plain box) if the buyer is willing to wait 28 days for delivery. So glad I'm getting shot of the sets I have.
Dr Zoidberg
11 Dec 15 #73
Do you have any information about this Lego Again website?
It sounds interesting, but there's a lot of parts that are no longer in print, and the further back you go, the lower the RRP would be in relation to current sets. I don't know how much 928 would have cost in 1979 but I'd quite happily buy a brand new one for that much now.
TabbyBoy to Dr Zoidberg
11 Dec 15 #78
Currently it's a small outlet near the Czech factory and they're working on low volume on-demand injection moulders that can reproduce any piece in any colour in small quantity. It appears that sets will be sold at the current equivalent RRP but in plain boxes as printing is expensive for small quantities. I heard this on one of the Czech LEGO forums (a colleague translated for me) where a lot of members are LEGO employees and tidbits are often posted for a few minutes before they are removed. There's a very strong possibility that 10179 is being re-released early next near in a plain box with instructions in a downloadable PDF. I've not heard of a date when it all goes public but, LEGO are really cracking down on resellers and plan to wipe them all out later next year. It's "game over" for QFLLs - LOL.
Crustybeaver
11 Dec 15 #74
Selling an item here or there isn't going to require declaring your earnings but very few eBay and Amazon 3rd party sellers are selling one or two sets. You seem to be a little confused with your understanding of how tax works. You don't have to be a registered business to be applicable for paying tax, selling for profit once over the threshold requires declaring your income irrespective of who you are.

The Delorean has done incredibly well since retiring last year, don't think anyone could have predicted it would be selling for the money it is now. Anyone can highlight a set that's shown good ROI, it's a whole different ball game predicting what will retire when and what will perform well when retired. If stupidity is based on whether or not I listen to the views of others on this site then I guess I'm guilty as charged. I've been selling Lego for years and it never seems to amaze me how clueless, inexperienced and lacking in accuracy most of the investing information is that's passed on this site.
Crustybeaver
11 Dec 15 #75
You're the ignorant fool if you believe that The Delorean's success is representative of Lego reselling profits. TLG release 500-700 sets each year and you quote the best performing set in recent time as a basis for your opinion. And what about the hundreds of sets that retire each year that struggle to make retail price? It's not a question I want an answer to, I don't care for your opinion. I've seen comments like yours a hundred times over. Think you've got all the knowledge and answers but really haven't got a Scooby Doo about the pitfalls and difficulties faced with a highly competitive reselling market. I'm done talking with you.
TabbyBoy
11 Dec 15 #76
"RETIRING SOON" means nothing. The Death Star displayed this 3 years ago and it's still with us and very widely available. If LEGO was really retiring this set, the buying limit would be >1 to get rid. It's a POOR seller, make up your own mind. I listed one on eBay last year at £99 start and not a sniff.
jonnyh132
11 Dec 15 #77
The point I was making was good value is good value. I don't buy lego myself for profit, but I have PLENTY of items from my childhood that are worth more now than then. Even used toys.

I just got annoyed how certain people are blasting somebody's plan of selling in future. It's all the buyers risk so why bother having a pop?!

11 Dec 15 #88
Is this really happening? I'm sure a huge percentage of Lego's sales are made up from collectors and investors and if they went ahead with this, they would probably completely wipe out a large portion of their market for new sets. There are plenty of folk who don't care about boxes, so for them it is a good idea but true collectors like the boxes so all this will do is push up the value of collectable sets even further.

I don't understand the hatred on here for QFLL's, that's just how life works in today's cash greedy society.

I suppose it is good for those too that have 10179 and don't care about the box, just put the "new" pieces in the old box and cash in.

11 Dec 15 #89
I do not have an opinion either way regards to who buys and for what purpose and how many, however, what I think we can say as a business model, Lego does not care who purchases the product, £169.00 is £169.00 spent regardless.

I believe at present Lego is regarded as a premium product (look at the prices and product placement itself toward the higher end), therefore, it would seem counter productive to essentially devalue the product via this reported factory making older Lego sets in brown packaging.

The whole idea does not sit right as Snatch_Master rightly says. Who am I to say if its fact or fiction, but a sure fire way to devalue a product and alienate a large loyal customer base.

Surely the "QFLL" (never come across that acronym before - is it used just by the lego fraternity, or for used car salesmen too?), anyways - surely the QFLL are the ones that make all this more lucrative for the long termers?? Surely if you're long term, you want the QFLL so there is less competition / saturation when you come to sell on your own items further down the line?

My biggest regret is not getting the Delorean (not for re-sale - just for the geek factor). :disappointed: At the time I didn't release sets' "retired", and kept thinking "i'll buy it later"... little did I know :disappointed: no-way I'm paying stupid money for one now though!

I'm offloading a lot of my sets now for buy-in plus 5%. This 5% will be donated to British Airways' Flying Start charity as I;ve had permission to post adverts in their kitchen areas. I've offloaded a lot already - result. Not a penny profit for me but, I felt sooooo good. I've been known to be greedy but, I make sure that my local school is OK and that the charities I support have their fair share. Any charity that cold-calls me gets nothing!

BTW... I just ordered 4 at Reading (discounted) on my way home from work which are being sent from another store. I hope that 3 pay for 1 where I'll build it, display and then donate later on.

Speak to a Smyths manager and they can source one for you from another store if you're polite.

Got one for £117 with staff discount thanks to seeing this. On the day this was posted we had one single guy come along and buy 4 of them. To the people saying they don't believe about buying and reselling Lego as a way to make money that actually works, they're totally wrong. Every single set I've bought in the last 3 years has gone up in value once discontinued - even the opened sets (with box and instructions) are selling for more than they cost me new in a lot of cases.

I've spent probably about £1000-£1500 on it in the last 3 years and if I sold it all would get close to £3000 based on completed and sold eBay listings. For a bunch of boxes that sit in my cupboard for years it's easy profit.
