What is Lidl UK's position on Halal meats?
Make up your own mind on this subject:
"We care very much about the provenance of our meat and only stock British and New Zealand farm assured lamb which meets our strict quality requirements."
"As an integral part of our stringent animal welfare standards, all our fresh own label meat and poultry comes from animals that have been stunned prior to slaughter. 100% of our fresh British meat and poultry is Red Tractor certified, which means that it must comply with strict welfare standards for animals on the farm, during transport, and in the abattoir. We would categorically not permit any meat from our own label products to have been produced by a slaughter method that does not adhere to these conditions.
Meat producers worldwide can supply products for halal and non-halal markets. In order to qualify as certified halal, all processes, production and transport must be regulated throughout the process from slaughter to sale according to strict guidelines. This requires dedicated and segregated supply chains. As stated above, we only buy our own brand meat from producers who stun animals prior to slaughter. A small proportion of this meat is slaughtered - but not further processed or distributed - in accordance with halal requirements. As the meat does not comply with halal standards, it would be wrong and misleading to label it as halal.
We believe it is appropriate for Government in this case to set the rules on how meat should be labelled. This is a complex issue and Government guidelines would ensure that any new regulation would apply to all food businesses. This would ensure consistency for consumers who would know they are getting the same information whether they are in a supermarket or a restaurant."

I really can't see what the fuss is if the meat is kosher or halal. The slaughter house process is incredibly stressful for animals regardless of the method of slaughter. If you care about animal welfare then don't eat them in the first place.
NZ treats animals well and they have plenty of land to graze them. It makes sense to import NZ lamb as their season is the exact opposite to the UK.

It's a bit hit and miss leaving the Christmas dinner shop to arrive on the "reduced shelves" just before Xmas - as I've learnt to my cost in the past :disappointed:
Think I'll stock up with some of this - Just in case :smirk:

Can't understand why halal for all if us when halal demanding community is in minority and they get from their own halal meat shops any how. Just to get business from small number you are pushing everyone to eat halal

It's to do with price. Halal flown from New Zealand is still cheaper that British or Welsh lamb, so supermarkets buy it. It's to do with money- halal from NZ is cheaper.

I would not rush as one or two day before Christmas, Tesco and Asda will be selling them at about £4 per item - my last two years' experience. Just wish I had a bigger freezer!
