Many people care.
I have no problem with people wanting to eat blessed meat.
It should be about choice and clear labeling.
Saying a prayer over meat offends me.
I would not want to eat halal meat, for people who are not offended like you it's their choice.

As a Muslim, today, I woke up, showered, went to work, came home, watched the Simpson (it was the one when Homer tries to write a best-selling book) and now on HUKD site. I think you can see that was a pretty successful day of "islamifying" Europe. I am doing the same tomorrow. At this rate I think I will have islamified Europe by end next month. Frightened yet??

Is there much difference in taste between halal and non halal meat... my friend says because of the way animals are killed for halal (and kosher) food eg the blood is drained ...they tend to be drier???
Thanks jane
nja1 to Nanajane

Had a halal nandos once and it was better I reckon. Local nandos occasionally don't cook it properly but the halal one was cooked spot on.
barbiegirl to Nanajane
3 Dec 15 1 #13
You're talking about Kosher meat, which has the blood removed via draining and then salting. Yes, it ruins the quality of red meat. Kosher chicken is definitely different to non-kosher chicken; I would say it tastes better. The main thing about Kosher meat is that the entire carcass is carefully inspected by a qualified individual to ensure no traces of disease e.g. BSE and other nasties in the spinal column or organs. Any slight defect and it's rejected. Kosher meat is only small scale production in this country (there' only c 300,000 Jews in the UK c.f. closer to 3 million Muslims) so still done by hand, the way 'the book' prescribes it. From what I understand, Hallal slaughtering is mainly done to a looping tape recording of the prayers that are supposed to be said when taking an animal's life.
gerry7230 to Nanajane
3 Dec 15 1 #62
Yes there is a difference. The blood is drained and the animal is unaware of what's coming so they don't have adrenaline running which can taint the meat and stress can toughen the meat.
1ks to Nanajane
3 Dec 15 #67
Halal meat is brought into market for Muslim buyers. The procedure of slaughtering involves facing animal towards mecca, reading quran and slowly cutting the throat...basically to serve life to a God.
I never eat such meats and always ask before I buy.
Gollywood

But in practice is doesn't because those groups won't buy it unless its stamped or certified.

It's up to the supermarkets weather they market it as halal or not. The meat is usually halal so the wholesaler/butcher can sell to a wider audience. The people who then retail the meat decide to advertise the meat as halal or not. I don't think the end product is much different either way.

MeesterX to Rebel_1980
3 Dec 15 2 #55
What if there's a muslim guy outside saying the prayers as the animal is slaughtered and they waft over the carcass it becomes accidentally "halal"?

Has your butcher checked for this?
Diamond_Studd
3 Dec 15 #26
lol cant stop laughing at that
barbiegirl
3 Dec 15 2 #28
Well I guess it depends. What the two share is that the animal is supposed to be slaughtered using a super-razor sharp knife with one cut to the carotid. The animal is supposed be individually slaughtered in a calm environment. Clearly once this process become scaled up / industrialised, the sentiment and spirit is somewhat lost.

So, if you object to non-stunned slaughtering, then you could reasonably object to both.

However, the drive for all NZ lamb to be Hallal comes from the huge Muslim population. There's not enough Jews around to drive that kind of strategic decision at a high level (e.g. New Zealand Lamb Marketing Board or whatever they call the body that decides this stuff). At least not in Europe - Hitler killed most of them off and the rest are emigrating to US, Israel and Canada as fast as they can to avoid the inevitable Islamification of Europe (already underway...). Not trying to be contentious, just my opinion (and some facts thrown in..)

I'm not a farmer so can't speak with total confidence. But I don't believe so - they tend to just graze. If you really want top quality lamb buy Gower Peninsula or Romney Marsh lamb - saltmarsh lamb is the very best there is...
no_Sunshine
3 Dec 15 #30
Halal is pretty close to Kosher too... Loop recording or not, the main reason for slaughtering Halal way is to ensure their is as less or no blood left in the flesh after slaughtering.... then the meat is inspected for visible signs on any diseases (in various organs etc) then cleaned thoroughly with water = real method of Halal...

Given the choice I would always avoid halal slaughtered meat but it is becoming increasingly difficult nowadays to know when you are actually buying it.
ALL meat should be labelled informing people how the animal was slaughtered to make it easier to decide whether to buy it or not.
KFC for instance in some stores only supply Halal meat and in other stores its non Halal but it's not clearly advertised what stores are supplying.

We only buy our meat & poultry from our local English Butcher and have done for a few years now - we know it's non-halal. As a family, we also don't eat at KFC, Subway, Nando's etc. due to the halal issue. Overall, we've actually reduced our meat intake and only eat it a maximum of 3-4 days a week. It's fish 1-2 days per week and a vegetarian dish 1-2 days per week. I make a mean chickpea burger!

Animal is never aware what's coming. The guideline for slaughtering is to stun the animal before killing. Halal is a meat made by killing animal facing mecca, reading quran and serving life of animal to God.KFc :they make sure they have non halal restaurant in a city where they have halal one.. As majority don't eat halal for the reason the animal is killed.

Hi... it was not my intention to start a religious debate or cause any bad feeling, I was genuinely asking if there was a difference in flavour between halal and non halal meat as I have not bought halal meat before and thought someone might know. This seemed a good deal and I have family coming for a meal, I wanted to do something nice and was concerned, because of what my friend said, that the meat might be dry. I apologise if I offended anyone
Jane
someguy003 to Nanajane
4 Dec 15 1 #76
There is not a great deal of difference in taste. With non-halal the animal is stunned by electrocution. Sometime this is also done in halal (sometimes not). But what is always done in halal slaughter is the islamic recognition of taking the life of God's creation, by the slaughterman saying "Bismillah, al-rahman al-rahim" BEFORE slitting the animal's throat. That is the only difference. By saying this, the meat becomes "halal" (permissible to eat by muslims).

There is no way to debate creationism with a religious person. It's like trying to argue with someone in Swahili when you don't speak the language. No useful communication can occur.

But seeing as someguy003 seems intent on being provocative, having turned a semi-useful thread which contained facts about slaughter methods, by stating he couldn't wait for the Islamification of Europe, into something about religion, I offer the following academic study. Fair point - I dare say it isn't peer reviewed - but not everything peer reviewed is somehow better or more truthful as a result - often that's just a result of groupthink. I do however happen to know a PhD mathematician who has, with the author's permission, examined the data, with some very interesting conclusions. Analysis paid for by a government. You should also consider whether there's an environment conducive to peer reviewing such material - not everyone feels free to speak on these issues...

But you are correct - not academic in the traditional sense without peer review.

Facts look scarily correct though...
