Sorry, I meant move away from AMD. I have an AMD FX-8350 at the moment and I think it's bottlenecking in games.
I'm perfectly happy with my GTX 970 card.

Good deal. If you're after pure Ghz speed, this is still the best chip you can get. For example, I have a gaming PC that also doubles as an arcade cab, so emulators feature pretty heavily in my setup. Emulators don't tend to utilise multiple cores much (and many ignore the GPU) so this chip is perfect.
As for PC gaming, I'm running this with a gtx 970 and it's absolutely devouring Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 with everything set to ultimate.

When will this take CPU take a serious price dip?
I thought the release of skylake would cause this to go sub £200.

I think I'm just going to hold out for the 6600k. I want to move away from Nvidia but the DDR4 prices are just too high atm.

Why move away from NVIDIA if they offer superior products that don't require a boatload of CPU? I would be concerned that this CPU issue will re-appear down the road as it has already shown it's head that AMD can bottleneck the CPU much easier.

Good price, as all Intel CPU's are at silly prices at the moment.

At amazon France its about £150, not sure about delivery costs though and I converted the price using google, but it shouldn't be too far off that
I've just looked at the 4690k and its 288 Euros which equates to about £195 depending on the rate. It's just under £175 on Amazon UK

is this better than a skylake 6700? I'm pretty confused by all these processors

This 4790K is using an older socket type, Haswell LGA 1150 whereas Skylake/6700(K) is using the latest 1151 socket.
Skyline is using a smaller manufacturing process too so should be lower wattage and higher overclocking potential if you go with a K series chip and Motherboard.
Skylake also uses DDR4 so potentially more performance if used in certain circumstances.
I'd only recommend going for this if you're upgrading an older system or can find a good deal on a Haswell/1150 Motherboard.
If you're building a brand new PC then just go with Skylake.
Hope this cleared up some of your confusion.

The 6700k replaced this. 6700k is a bit better, and newer platform brings ddr4 and stuff. It's a lot more money though, so the choice is yours
