no i switched it to variable , but was still quite hot before the bios update

hp have released a bios update fan hardly comes on now and a lot cooler i bought the 8gb version i5
the back light bleed is due to the fitting of the screen not the screen itself

no it won't... the fan will come on when the process reaches a certain temperature... in the BIOS you are only disabling the 'always on' fan you are NOT totally disabling the fan.

i have the hp envy 13 inch and the fan is on constantly. from the moment it switches on. does anyone else have this issue? i know you can switch the fan off in the boot/bios menu, but is this safe to do? i dont know if this will disable the fan completely, or will it still come on when needed. please advise, thanks

I've been reading up on IPS displays and bleeding is common; unfortunately one of the disadvantages of IPS screens. Even on high QC manufactures like Apple bleeding on macbook air is also very common. The only question is how much bleeding is one willing to accept...

its not right though is it... to console(can't spell) yourself to keeping what should be a premium product. It has flaws that shouldn't pass qc. I'm kinda relieved I didn't order it ...

Just went and picked up my second replacement. This one has some sligh bleeding on the top left corner, but definitely not as bad as the other two. Also haven't noticed any dead pixels.
What I did notice though, was that there was some white powder like residue near the bezel (small quantities) and a tiny scratch (only visible when one looks closely) on the palmrest.
I think I'm going to keep this one :smile:

Currys/PC World cs leads a lot to be desired, if mines faulty it will be going back for a refund. I will have tried 3 without success, which is a shame as nice machine and very competitively priced, same spec far more elsewhere. Even more so with pcworld discounts.
I only noticed broken pixels on google home page as were stuck dark so showed up. Didn't use my first long enough to notice as had massive light spot so just sent back

Yup. Going to a different store to get a replacement tomorrow (replacement was the last one in my local store apparantely). :/
I don't believe I have any broken pixels, but then again I haven't been using the device long enough (the bleeding issue just annoys the hell out of me and I don't want to invest my time setting it up as I know its' going straight back).

I'd reject the second 1 as well, the top middle looks like a pressure point rather than just light bleed, they both look worse than my second one, any broken pixels?

Yes; the laptop was indeed delivered (by DPD).
The bleeding was very noticeable when booting up, but when viewing dark images/pictures on high brightness it was also noticeable. Lowering the brightness did help somewhat, but still annoying (I use visual studio with dark theme on a daily basis).
Anyhow, I decided that it was unacceptable for a 'premium device' (priced at £800 in-store) and went to my Local PC World store where I got an exchange.
The replacement machine also has bleeding :disappointed:
It was "pre-setup" and they wanted an extra £35. After explaining that setting up a Windows 10 device shouldn't take more than 10 mins, they tried charging me £10 for the KnowHow USB drive that they included (apparantely it contains a recover image). After exchanging a few words, they just gave up and gave me the replacement without extra charge.
Here are some pictures, to illustrate the issue. I created an image of a black square using paint, and then viewed it full screen in the Windows Photo Viewing app:

Is the screen bleed just on start up? When booting the machine seems to turn screen to 100% brightness. My first 1 had pressure point bleed so sent that straight back my 2nd had all 4 corners but only on 100% brightness, I would have kept this 1 except it had more than 3 dead pixels out of the box so also returned to hp. I have ordered a 3rd from pcworld in hope that they just had a bad batch but more I read the more ppl I see with this issue.

And as predicted, there's backlight bleeding on the top left corner :disappointed:

Got confirmation my order has been fulfilled and will be delivered on Tuesday. I ordered 6th Gen Core i5 /8GB RAM/256GB SSD for £499 (£100 off and £200 code). Thankfully it worked for me however, I'm not sure if I should keep it. Any thoughts?

HP have different versions of the same product. For example the HP SPECTRE X360 has similar on board RAM versions but only some versions come without onboard RAM. Look at the source carefully on the HP website and you will find model numbers without onboard RAM. The common HP SPECTRE is usually onboard RAM which is readily available but you can order with longer wait times the midweek number without onboard RAM. I have one with 4gb x2 RAM version of the HP SPECTRE which took 12 - 13 days after order to deliver. The usual one has 8gb onboard RAM. I haven't opened it up though to see if it can be swapped.

I have had 2 of the more expensive i7 with the bigger SSD drive direct from hp both had faulty screens, gave up and requested refund, I have ordered another i7 see if I get luckier this time, I read about the difference between i5 and i7 but fasters still faster even if only little!
Great laptop. I have it. Can't fault it. Battery life is fine, 7+ hours average usage. Any questions, feel free to ask.
Note I have the 1080p screen, which may differ slightly in areas such as battery life.

I would have preferred the 1080p screen with 8GB RAM. But shame that the RAM can't be upgraded since it's soldered on. And I reckon a 1080p screen would be less of a battery drain than a 3200 x 1800 panel.
