I guessing you have to get an gas engineer to install these? Or has anyone done a DIY on these?

They are electric so no gas engineer, fitted a nest easily enough myself

The first engineer they sent couldn't wire it into our boiler, the second could. I think I could have done the same if I had have read the boiler manual.
but now, I'd go Nest instead.

if you've got a timer thermostat already, it's a 2 minute face replacement job. no gas qualifications required. But otherwise a spark could do in 15 mins. I've got the original. Nest etc might be better for future home automation and with zones, but this is simple and easy.

A lot of people have said that! Can you give me the search you put in? All I can find are videos of "what will happen on the day" and "how to use" videos!
cannot see current temp at a glance, without interacting with the damm thing

Does anyone know if this version can be used without hot water? I have a combi boiler.
Also, can the thermostat be wired to get rid of the need for batteries like Nest can?

we have one on a combi, works fine.
the remote use batteries but we never use the remote, have never replaced batteries in a year (I don't think it's essential? We control via app)

a little off topic but does anyone know of any of kit that cant be fitted to our heating system to create heating zones. Currently have a combi boiler with a thermostat. Thanks

To create zones you'd need to pretty much replumb your central heating. Basically you'd need to create separate circuits controlled with a manifold so a controller can direct the hot water to whatever zones you require. A friend built his own house and each radiator was on its own circuit connected to a heat store so he could control each radiator independently, though it is a huge job to retrofit such a setup to your house.
A cheaper way of doing a similar thing is to fit electronic thermostatic valves to your radiators and set them up for the times you want certain rooms / areas heated (ie you'd set the bedroom rads to only come on in the morning and evening). You can get such valves for about £30-£40 each, they are battery operated, I've seen them on HUKD before!

Check out Honeywell Evohome, it's more expensive but it's streets ahead of Hive and Nest.
It totally changed the way we used our heating. You can monitor and control temperatures in each room/zone.
No drawbacks for me love everything about it.Ignore the negatives the same people who probably had the same phone for the last 10 years.Paid £199 with installation on the black Friday event and very pleased.

I have evohome, it's superb. Easy to install and the TRVs make it easier without having to replumb. Fitted myself and having control of every room is superb. Way better than nest etc.

Anyone know if this is compatible with a basic combi boiler setup, no thermostats, just timer function + boost. Just thinking future proof and why not have the extra function availability for the future, or do you have to specifically buy the other "heating" one for that?
Any advice gratefully received?

I have both, one in the office on a combi and one at home also on a combi.
Nest looks nicer but Hive is essentially the same but with a better install (BG engineer). Hive uses batteries which is rather silly. However the geo feature on hive (locates you when you're leaving/arriving using the app) is great. Hive also cover the old square thermostat position, no need for an ugly plastic plate. Otherwise VERY similar so price is key.

I have used a system in my last 2 houses from Conrad. In each room you put a thermostat on the wall, and you program different temps for different times of the day. You replace the normal valve on your radiator by something which talks to the thermostats (wirelessly). The thermostats talk to a control unit which is plugged in to your boiler. If all rooms are up to temp the system turns off. Its fantastic, all rooms are kept at the right temp at the right time of the day.
I'm willing to help people further if they wish to know more.

I must say I hadn't heard of that type of system, is it expensive? How long do the batteries last in the valves?

I think you meant 'Nest' on first point (geo feature)? Don't you have to plug the Nest into a socket? How long does the battery for Hive last?

27 Dec 15#50
Sorry for the slow reply, festive celebrations etc. Well the room controllers I have are the fht 8's. However they don't seem to have many any more and they also don't have the control unit (i think it was fht 8w). Not sure if they are out of stock, stopped being produced or have been superseded. I will try and investigate.
Give or take it was £60 per room (some rooms have 2 radiators controlled by 1 thermostat) and about £90 for the boiler control unit. Of course you don't need them in every room... e.g. the utility or downstairs toilet.
