Could somebody please explain their reason for voting cold? would like to know as it seems like a good deal and was thinking of booking for myself

Never been to Harrogate before, do you know if the location is within walking distance of main attractions?

Though have to say the LBA is just 20 mins away should be taken with a seriously large pinch of salt! Can take a bloody hour to get from 1 side of Harrogate to another at peak times. I know most of the rat runs around the place n will still avoided going anywhere near the centre unless I have to.

It is. Harrogate isn't that big but the road network around it is absolutely shot as it hadn't changed in over 30 years. Train Station to hotel is about 10 mins walk top side tho I'd say. The hotel is no Majestic but it isn't bad either. Good night out to be had tho so book it and enjoy, just try not to drive...

No worries. Recommend spending a day in Leeds, 20 mins tops via train as Harrogate can easily be done in a day n Knaresbrough really isn't worth bothering with and Ripon similar. North York's moors are spectacular but if you're not a confident driver then I really would recommend as roads can get very narrow and hills extremely steep.

Leeds is fantastic for bars, restaurants and shopping, its probably the biggest city that's the easiest to get to everywhere you'd want to you could go to, just watch the train times back because the rail network hasn't even caught up with the road building around here.... Ha!

Harrogate is fine for driving.... Can be busy at rush hour, but all large town/cities are.

Hotel is in a great location.

I don't know the hotel but the location is perfect for walking into town. We've been to Harrogate a couple of times and it's a lovely town. A good range of shops, parks, restaurants and bars.
My particular favourite is the live music at the Blues Cafe Bar which is just down the hill next to Bettys!

harrogate is lovely, plenty of clubs, pubs, tea rooms and antique shops. well known for the baths and a quaint town

We stayed at this hotel last year! The lobby bar breakfast room etc all loom lovely the rooms are a bit dated but we had a lovely stay was clean, breakfast was nice, the Christmas market was outside the front door and you can walk anywhere in Harrogate centre in 5 mins! Hotel was 5 mins from train. 5 mins from wetherspoons in diff direction and surrounded by bars, eateries and the shops. The shops weren't amazing but we filled a day quite happily! Was a lovely sit down Indian styke buffet restaurant there too. There were parking places outside the hotel but we got the train which was much easier

Hi I live near Harrogate. You can have a great time in Harrogate no need to go to Leeds. Get another deal if you want to go to Leeds. Harrogate has some very good restaurants and bars besides the famous Betty's. The Hotel is right in the centre. There is a small parking area in front of the hotel so if you phone them in advance you could find out if they have space. The train station is an easy walk away. Harrogate is a Spa town so don't forget to visit the Turkish Baths for a pamper, it is famous for award winning gardens, including RHS Harlow Car. See what's on at the theatre, or the Royal Hall, check if there's anything interesting on at the exhibition centre, If you have your car with you you are about 30 mins away from Fountain's Abbey which is a World Heritage Site.. If the sun is shining it is worth a trip to Knaresborough walk along the river side and watch the world go by in a riverside cafe. If all else fails you are about 30 mins drive from York. (use park and ride) The traffic can be bad but you won't be stuck in traffic for hours because Harrogate just isn't big enough for that. This looks like a good deal. I have never stayed in the hotel but I did have afternoon tea there once years ago and it seemed nice. I did once win a stay in the hotel du Vin next door and really enjoyed that.

Hi, can you settle an argument for me? A colleague and I have had a long-standing disagreement about the pronunciation of 'Harrogate'. I have always maintained that it is pronounced 'Harrogut' (and I've lived in Yorkshire pretty much my entire life). My colleague - who lived there for a while - says she and all her friends who still live there - pronounce it as 'HarroGATE' (which naturally prompts some good-natured ribbing from me over what seems to be some sort of trumped-up verbal affectation to underline the 'poshness' of the place. But who is right?

Any comments from locals shedding light on this gratefully received. :smiley:

Your colleague is correct...the Yorkshire accent in Harrogate is very "soft" but some residents from other parts of Yorkshire may well use the "gut"....happiest Town in the UK according to a Rightmove survey.

The only ones who call it HarroGATE are those who think a few bob raises themselves above everyone else.

Skipton is according to another, Ripponden was regarded as the best village too.

Are you saying you've actually HEARD Harrogate locals pronounce the place that way then (i.e. HarrowGATE)?

Yes, they are normally female, teak coloured, wearing designer clothes designed for someone twenty years younger than themselves and drive a Range Rover or something equally large yet amazingly don't actually seem to do anything for a living....
