Nice strawman. Yep, that's exactly what I was saying.

I have the upmost sympathy with anyone that is affected by these type of issues. But, you have more chance of dying/being seriously harmed (mentally or physically) from cycling than at the hands of paedophiles. Are you going to stop children getting bikes?

In addition, most abuse is at the hands of people that are known to the child, so not sure what use this would realistically be.

If it makes people feel more secure, then good on them. I personally think the £20 would be far more effective given to Childline.

The problem with statistics is most are made up and for a positive result someone has to be affected.

Also a donation to Childline doesn't prevent issues.

Your logic that this device is going to put off a committed paedophile is at worst, naive and at best, somewhat misplaced.

It's not that I don't like your point, I just think it lacks any real coherence. Me being critical of a product doesn't really equate with me toughening up my kids by making them paedo-bait.
Vanderlust
1 Dec 15 8 #16
So you don't know my point, and you don't know what a strawman means. Great stuff.

My point, since everyone here but you was smart enough to get it, wasn't that it would deter a paedophile, but that a child could press a button on their watch if they were approached by one.

Funny how people who spew terms like coherence, strawman, and get all wordy with lines such " ...is at worst, naive and at best, somewhat misplaced."...

... are the least rational.

The device here is a simple tracker with a panic button. How that equates to wrapping a child up in cotton wool is anyone's guess. If anything it could mean giving the child more freedom to explore the world, and gain more experience.

Where your nonsensical diatribe falls short is in your first reply. Your insinuation that my disregard for a product in some way validates that I advocate paedos toughening up children is a little bit strange, a touch emotional and pretty misguided.

I disagree with your point. It's a mutual thing, I get it. Merry Xmas.

Really I'd drop the academic affectations, and focus more on substance. You haven't approached this rationally. Just look where you're at. Blowing hot air on HUKD with some guy because you made some trite remark about a child tracking device.

What is the reason for all the academic language and hot air anyway? Under-achievement usually at school or university level, compensation of some sort of course, but I don't like to presume. :man: Do tell.

Surely if your kid is young enough to warrant this they shouldn't be out alone. And if they are old enough to be out alone they would neither want, wear or use this whilst their mates are on their iPhones.
If your the kind of parent that sends your 4 year old down the shop to get your daily supply of chocolate and coke becuase you can't be bothered to get off the sofa then you won't be that bothered about their safety in the first place.
And yes, the news would have you believe their is someone waiting behind every hedge and outside every school to steal away your kid. Nonsense.

SoggyBeans to fireman1

Sounds like there are some naive folk out there.

There are wierd'os all over and you can't even tell who most of them are by looking. It is getting worse.

Kids get snatched, and sometimes the worst happens. It doesn't matter how often it happens, it does happen and if this helps gives peace of mind and protection of the person that's most precious to you...then great.

Sure, kids shouldn't be roaming off out of view at 4 or 5 or even older, and those parents that do let them are quite frankly not fit to be parents.

I agree an older child is unlikely to want to wear it, but ideal for some.

For my 10 year old autistic child, this is excellent, as it gives me piece of mind while can play with friends of the same age, even though it's only as far as the next street.

I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to make sure they know that theyre child is safe.

You guys...if it's useful to you, buy it, if it isnt, don't...

Parents can be as careful as possible but you can't always get things 100% right. For example, I was a right little sod as a kid and would walk off (I had child reins and still occasionally managed it), nearly all the time my parents would stop me (if you think you never make mistakes, you are mistaken), but it did very occasionally happen.
I remember being lost once because of this and being frightened, would have loved a "sos button".

Now imagine you have 2 or 3 of the little sods, easily happens...

Handy if you temporarily misplace them though. I've done it. Beach in Devon. Child rushes off to play on some nearby dunes, gets confused and is lost for around two hours. Very scary.

(And I wish the idiot going on about "academic language" would give it a rest. Yes, some people have a better grasp of the subtleties of English than others. Doesn't make them a pseud anymore than not using them makes you unintelligent. Though you may be that anyway).

Kinda shocked at some of the comments here (and kinda not!)
These watches dont just serve the parents who allow their children to be out, or have anything to do with abductions, but they would be ideal for those children that do take a bolt thanks to conditions like ASD and ADHD. It's every parents worry, and whilst unlikely that many people will have to experience such a frightening circumstance, it may just be reassuring to have.

My comment on this watch is if you have children old enough to use the SOS button then get it. It could be very helpful if your child gets lost and they are scared and you find them quickly. If they were taken although unlikely then they could press that button. It may even come in handy to teach them that if anyone, even family touched you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable then you press the button. I cant tell you how more real that is than not. 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused by the age of 16. That is a fact and in fact it may be higher. So a watch with a sos button is in my humble opinion fantastic. Please consider getting one.

Well who said anything about monitoring it is a device that can help you find your children if they are in trouble! Try asking 8 year old there precise location if they are lost! And add autism to the equation! If you don't have imagination! Why are people still going on about this simple buy it if you like it add heat to and don't if you prefer £17 over safety of your kids
FootOfDavros1
