Wonderful insightful indepth review of Lidl, must stop shopping in there for the fresh veg(which does quite rightly smell, strangely of veg)and yes the people in there smell unlike the shoppers in other stores who have no fragrance at all.

I actually meant the stores smell! Everyone I have been in doesnt smell good at all, whereas you go into tesco, sainsburys, asdas and aldis and they all smell fresh. I have had bad experiences with a lot of the food bought from Lidl and find that out of all the supermarkets, they are the worst. We use Aldi for 75% of our weekly shop and go to savers, home bargains, b&m, poundland and the co-operative for everything else. We sometimes pick up stuff from Asda and Sainsburys, and Tescos is good for the odd offer, but there isnt one nearby. Not even the 1kg of nutella on offer at Lidls could tempt me in. That better?

One consolation, Farmfoods easilly the smelliest food retailer we know about!

Lucky him. I must day, got some of their pan chocs in the summer in glasgow, very nice, 3 for £1 I think. The store did have that unique Lidls smell though! £10 off if using for booze isnt bad I suppose, so I give it hot for that :smiley:

I also use all the shops depending on where the deals are - like a proper HUKDer, I have no loyalty whatsoever!

how strange. I have shopped in both. Lidl fruit and veg is better and doesn't go off as quickly as Aldi in my experience. as for damp cardboard perhaps your nearest store has incontinent customers ? :disappointed::disappointed:

as for cleanest stores I think waitrose with a close runner up of sainsburys.

I dont doubt that some stores are fine, but EVERY Lidls I have been in (at least seven or eight) has this odour.
I think this, plus fact I have felt unwell 2 or 3 times after buying and eating stuff from there, has put me off forever.
We do like the pastry though, and some of the frozen offers that pop up now and again are exciting, but they have always sold out on the few times we have ventured in.
For us, Aldis beats Lidls hands down interms of quality, consistency, service, overall price, choice and shopping experience. We are not alone, Aldis did not win supermarket of the year for nothing!
For £10 of if buying booze this time of year, it is a winner though. We hardly drink, so useless to us :smiley:

Also have to agree 1 million percent about Waitrose and Sainsburys, M&S food usually good too, even in summer when their air con is always a pleasure! Maybe we should start a poll? Smelliest stores?

most amazing clothing worn by customers too... that seems to be a regional thing. around Derby some folk just get out of bed and go shopping. In hastings around 7 it's like folk from Shaun of the dead when they get the munchies.

A bit confused here. Is the voucher in the Lidl news, the listed newspapers or both? Also looking at the Lidl flyer there is a half price weekend this week, Saturday 19 the & Sunday 20th. So this weekend would be a great time to use it!<3

Personally I love Aldi over Lidl. I find it cheaper (cereal, nuts, pizzas, yoghurts, cheese, fruit & veg & more) and it has a lot more of what I need for my family shopping than Lidl.

When these deals are on I usually go with my Mother in Law or a friend and we spend and save 1/2 each.
Only ever had one bad thing in about 7 years.
Love their food weeks The staff in our branch are very nice. Would recommend but do shop elsewhere as well.

My sister really likes Lidl's (triple distilled?) vodka and hasn't had any problems with vouchers. Think she's stocked up enough now, but will pass it on.

I love how any discount retailer is met with such snobbery on HUKD. Do they really expect us to believe that there's such a high concentration of Fortnum & Mason shoppers scanning this site for deals?

I personally think Lidl is great. Tesco get a lot less of my money these days. Their fresh bread is nicer and their fruit and veg is better.

mine smells of fresh bread from the bakery, we used to have a butchery in it that wasn't nice but it's gone now, love lidl food especially at Christmas, ours is getting rebuilt so am missing it this year but will be making a special visit to my next nearest before Christmas, not horrible, not smelly, just nice food at a lot less than the major conglomerates.

is booze included as they do a nice couple of wines?

States that only 1 alcoholic purchase per voucher. They didn't care in my local store. Used it to buy 2 bottles of champagne and 6 bottles of prosecco. Nice

Lidl rocks, great value, great products, excellent quality and paying their staff a decent wage. Tesco, on the other hand sucks.

I actually like the smell, it reminds me of going shopping when I am holiday in Europe in those seaside mini-market places. I just need to put a bit of coconut smell Hawaiian Tropic sun cream on and I will feel like I am there already!

I don't do mu food shop at Lidl but after reading this tread I popped in this morning to see if I could do my christmas shop there. The only thing I could buy there is lamb leg. Apart from that I didn't find any sugarfree joghurt, no organic milk etc. If I'd go for the unhealthy option than yeah, I could do a proper shop with my trolley full of fizzy drink, chocolate, nutella, sugary joghurt...

I'm a Weegie and within walking distance of three Lidls (city centre, Springburn and Dennistoun). The only time there are "funny smells" are from the patrons, not the stores. Happens in Poundland at times too - but it's not confined just to discount stores - stinky people are everywhere!

In mainland Europe Lidl is just another supermarket - it doesn't have the "discount" snobbery that we in the UK have for it.

Popped into Lidls earlier on way to star wars. Looked in 2 brochure type leaflets, no voucher, and the funny smell unique to Lidls was there. 3 of my kids with me said same and that it was ugly. £10 off if able to get booze is great though, and I did have a look at the booze section, looked great.

Why did it take 8 visits to smelly stores with disgusting food that made you ill before realising lidl wasn't for you?

I bought the Sun in a hurry at Tesco and found there was no Lidl News in it, even checked the actual paper for a voucher.

Either it doesn't come in Northern Ireland editions or Tesco is sneakily removing competitors promotions from national newspapers :confused:

You have even slated someones football team insinuating they smell the same. no need for it. clearly you have nothing better to do.

It says on the voucher only one alcohol product can be bought but people have used it if 2 or 3 bottles of wine is amongst their shopping. Don't think a trolley full of bottles would get through.
