Argos just dropped the price of the fire tv to £65 (same price as JL, Amazon and Currys). Might be good if you want to pay with Amex and get £10 off £100 (obviously you'd have to buy some other tat for that to work)

Hi Can someone please help, 4 days ago I picked up Fire tv stick, can I return that and pick this one up?
yusszn to Wilzia
3 Dec 15#8
why not? You can return it and said it's not as expected. But just make sure it's looking good as new and resellable. Aaaa

Hdmi only relevant for 4k at higher than 30 frames per second. Sadly 4k is the only reason I want the box as I wanted to try amazon prime 4k as my TV doesn't have prime.

Yeah I reserved one as well, from my local Argos - went down, first the pay kiosk gave the old price (£79), then when I went to a till the assistant informed me they didn't have one! So much for their computerised ordering/stock checking!

HDMI 2.0 is not needed on a TV box. 4K movies/TV's shows are filmed at 24fps, HDMI 1.4 can manage that no problem.
The only time you would need HDMI 2.0 is for 4K gaming so you can achieve 60fps. Something this box will never be capable of doing.
Matthaus to martyn_3000
3 Dec 15#26
You need 2.0a for HDR and 10bit colour
1.4 is not enough

As a NowTV and Prime subscriber i'm torn, neither offers the others services as an option and by extension that means ROKU as well. I know the FireTV is based on android and I can see at least some progress on the NowTV app working on the FireTV but something windows based sadly still looks like the best option to do 'everything'.
This tv box has very old version of software which can NOT be updated and lot of updated apps wont with this box.
I had amazon box before and I just bought shield tv on black friday, its an awesome box.

If you want it for Kodi there are much better solutions for similar money, otherwise it's a good deal.

WetekPlay running kodi.
I'd personally get one with a twin Satellite tuner for the extra £15-20 these can be had for around £65 without a tuner or £80ish with, that way all you need is a USB HDD then you have a Freesat PVR!

Interesting, your link talkes you to the twin tuner version for only Euro89.99, roughly £64.Bargain!! You should post this!
So this box can run kodi and also connect to my sky dish?? What does it connect to on the dish, Freesat??

Yes it will give you Kodi with integrated freesat with full 7 day EPG add a HDD and it will record 2 channels at once.

Orribleharry, what version of Kodi is that or is it a different layout for openelec??
OrribleHarry to Towner
4 Dec 151#48
It's OpenELEC just with the Titan Skin on it. It's the nicest skin I have found by a long way. OpenELEC is no different in appearance than Kodi.

4 Dec 15#49
Wetek Play, although Live TV can be achieved on any box with access to a tuner.
leeds85
4 Dec 15#50
Thanks for that, they look great. However why would you say this is better for kodi, putting the option of recording from a tuner to one side for a minute?
OrribleHarry
4 Dec 151#51
It natively supports OpenELEC so can be made to boot it as an OS, it's also rock solid stable (they are the official sponsor of OpenELEC), whereas a FireTV can only be fudged to run the Android version of Kodi.
My original post was IF you were intending buying a FireTV to run Kodi then the Wetek is a better choice.
Don't get me wrong the FireTV are decent (i have one).

I finally got around to figuring out what kodi is all about the last two or three nights. I did a little research a couple of months ago but only touched on it. Its an interesting programme. hardly had enough time to go on the internet. Got it set up on my LG G4 to start with after watching a few tutorials on youtube.
I was thinking of buying an Amazon Fire Stick and then I see they do a fire tv box and now you recommend something else. Not sure what to get now lol. I am quite happy with things so far and was thinking about getting the stick first to see how we get on and then upgrade it as my guess is as soon as the wife see what it does she will want it in the bedroom (kodi options) and don't have anywhere I can put the box.
On the Wetek box I just wondered if you have an epg on it. I am using the Ivue one at the minute but just wondered if there was anything else.
OrribleHarry
4 Dec 15#53
Yes a full 7 day epg.

There's 10% cashback on Argos purchases up to £250 if you have a Nationwide Visa card and have it registered for their Simply Rewards scheme. So £6.50 back and a £5 Argos voucher - not a bad deal.

I dont need the tuner as its for the bedroom and my satellite dish is connected to the living room tv. This would only be used for kodi mostly so performance wise how does the fire tv and wetek compare? Also does it support ntfs? Can android apps be installed or not? I was close to buying the fire tv until i saw your post:{
Hardware wise wetek seems to have weaker specs compared to fire tv?
OrribleHarry
5 Dec 15#56
What are you buying it to do primarily?
jay-uk
5 Dec 15#57
For Kodi to Watch shows, movies and live sports. I currently have a fire stick and that jumps out of films/shows spontaneously as well as not working at times. My plan was to enable zero cache setting and put my 128gb micro sd card so kodi runs off it and effectively should stop the issues I was facing with the fire tv stick. Also would like to use a torrent app (currently use flud from playstore) whenever I do want to download something.
The usual live TV I don't need other than watching sports.
OrribleHarry
5 Dec 15#58
Kodi is much more stable on the Wetek.
You can get the wetek without a tuner.

5 Dec 15#59
Seems the official website is similar price to the fire tv with the tuner included. Can't find a better price without the tuner so I may as well get it included I guess
OrribleHarry
5 Dec 15#60
Yeah there is no sense in not getting the tuner if it's basically free. Gives you the option to get LiveTV at a later date.
Hustler1337 to OrribleHarry
5 Dec 15#61
Can I ask, does the tuner work with the built in Live TV on Kodi? If so, which PVR Client are you using and is it a simple setup? Thanks
OrribleHarry
6 Dec 15#62
Yes it does work with the built in live TV, you just enable TVHeadEnd and the associated TVHeadEnd PVR client add-ons, you can then enable Live TV within Kodi. It's fairly easy to set up you just have to scan for channels, there are plenty forums etc to help.
