"Que" just means "what?" His character says it a lot because he cannot understand what Basil Fawlty is trying to order him to do. It usually leaves the Basil Fawlty character woefully trying to use Spanish to explain what he wants doing, getting more and more annoyed as he does so. No most people don't say it a lot in Spanish, it's just part of the mechanics of the joke ahead. I'm presuming most people running hotels don't pretend to walk like Nazi SS officers on parade in their hotel restaurants either..

If it bothers you that much a) don't watch the show, b) don't bother posting on a thread that clearly is going to be frequented by fans of the series and c) Don't actually laugh at the "que" part of the joke which is the "setup" and wait for the actual "pun", which is an exasperated Basil Fawlty afterwards. d) You'd also best watch the episode of Fawlty Towers where John Cleeses character is made a completel mockery of by an undercover detective, who happens to speak Spanish just fine with Manuel, much to Fawlty's chagrin as he looks on. Cleese isn't poking fun at the Spanish Bell-boy, he's poking fun at the ignorant, pompous Fawlty. You're right, maybe you shouldn't watch it, you've missed the joke entirely..
(I can also distinguish between a person, and their work. I like "The Pianist", but that doesn't mean I like the film director or what he's been involved with in his past. I think Apocalypto is a decent film, yet it doesn't mean I approve domestic violence either.)

Anyway, instead of wasting your time on a thread about something you hate (and why you're here is anyones guess), this is probably more up your street.
An opinion piece from today's Guardian. 'Why do you never see a Lego mini-figure with a disability?'

Talk about a total lack of self awareness. You're in a minority of 1 and still you persist with your lunacy. Oh, and I did Google John Cleese and Heathrow - funnily enough nothing came back, which means he either didn't make those comments or that they were so minor and irrelevant that no one else gave a monkeys, apart from you.

But you're trying to imply it's motivated by making fun of the Spanish. It's not. It's making fun of his lack of understanding. He could have replied saying "what?" in any language and it would be the same joke.
You don't like/understand the humour, that's fine, but trying to say it's racist is ridiculous.

I wasn't telling anyone what is good comedy. I was asking why is someone saying "que" funny? I find most comedy to be unfunny. This is about as funny as Miranda. The only difference is that show gets slated good (and deservedly), while this show has people defending facile stereotyped racial/national debasement to the hilt because it is "funny comedy".

I and other TV license holders already paid for this 35 years ago. There is no media and it costs a fraction of a penny to stream across the web. Even at a discounted £5.99 it is a complete rip off. You can probably find them all on youtube for nothing which is what you should be paying.

I don't know Cleese for his work. I first knew of him from his disgusting comments he made about other human beings who are of different skin colouration to his own whenever he comes to Heathrow Airport. Then I investigated his work and saw other examples of debasement of human beings in his work. You can't really blame me for putting 2 and 2 together. You obviously know him for his work.

There's only so many times one can say that the Manuel character saying "que" isn't the funny bit of the sketch, twice already by my count!
Ironic that this conversation has turned into a Fawlty a Towers sketch itself. I've tried using logic and reasoning, but clearly I've about as much chance of getting that to work on you as Basil Fawlty has of getting his car to start by thrashing a Tree Branch at it.

There's always some sanctimonious Guardian reading idiot who tries to apply their 21st century pious PC nonsense onto a sitcom made in the 1970s. I don't care what you think. Oh, I don't watch this. It is quite overrated BS, much like today's "PC" comedy. The only exception is this has plaudits, "fans" and has people getting offended when others don't find a character saying "what" in spanish funny.

Yes, that is precisely what I am talking about. If I said "what" in English in a french language show, is that funny?? In don't think so. There are also other national/racial stereotypes that are also unfunny in this show. Cleese himself says he does not like coming to Heathrow because he does not like the look of foreign faces. Maybe his show is more of a narrative of his own attitudes rather than anything to do with comedy
