10p more than 3 weeks ago when it was on offer for a limited time only, but now it's back again in the Steam sale. Grab your joysticks and emulate Tim Peake......in a different kind of space!

Decided to give this a go, and try out my 2.99 joystick lol. Have to say, first hour in-game isn't promising. Docking is ridiculous. There's also no tooltips explaining what you're supposed to do. I spent most of my time Googling simple things like "how do I stop my ship". Literally nothing on screen which tells you you're supposed to press 'J' to drop out of warp (even though you did drop out of warp, just not all the way...)

Very nearly opted for Horizons, glad I didn't now. No wonder they don't offer a trial.

Just a heads up they have just released Elite Dangerous Horizons which is "season 2" of Elite Dangerous. Basically you get everything available here plus the next years worth of updates with Horizons including things like planetary landings and other major features. If you buy ED and want access to the updates coming in season 2 you will have to rebuy elite dangerous horizons at full price or wait for that to be discounted. There has been a big outroar in the Elite Dangerous community thanks to this and many people are boycotting Frontier now for basically deceiving their customers with this shady pricing model.

I would avoid supporting them myself.

There are loads of playable tutorials on the main menu screen. Including for docking. It's not a game with IWIN buttons but some people like that.

Maybe pacman is more your thing?

Or reading/thinking? There's very obvious tutorials from the main menu. Consider these pretty compulsory.

Tom, at the top of the menu when the game starts, there is an option "Training" click on that. There are then a dozen training missions walking you through all the basic aspects of piloting, combat and navigation.
You are asked to press every flight key in a "systems check" on the first mission.
http://blogs-images.forbes.com/jasonevangelho/files/2015/01/2015-01-15_12-40-56.jpg

Then, on the launcher, there is a "Tutorial" link (in case you missed it) this links to these videos here.

Hopefully that should sort you out.

I joined with kick starter a long time ago and very much agree it's a step learning curve and benefits from decent hardware, including a reasonable joystick. There are a lot of YouTube guides now that weren't available at the beginning. If someone is willing to spend a little time learning the basics it's a very impressive game. Dig a little deeper and it will reward you.

If you own season 1 you get a discount on season 2. But yes, if you want brand new features like landing on planets you'll need to buy Horizons, which includes the base game, at full price. Doesn't make getting Season 1 for £10 a bad deal. People being upset at a new release being full price, it's weird. Mostly seems to be Steam players who bought the base game for pennies complaining.

Elite isn't for everyone, that's certain. But if you want to fly a spaceship round a sandbox of the galaxy and shoot stuff, explore, trade or whatever, £10 for the base game is well worth a punt.
TomStockport
22 Dec 15 1 #8
Yea, I'm working through them. I'm not expecting 'iwin' buttons, but a tooltip would be nice. "hint: hit J to drop out of warp" rather than "Google "how to drop out of warp""
trifficplayer

Excuse my snippyness. While since I've done them but I'm pretty certain the tutorials do highlight which buttons you need to press as required. It does have a learning curve, good luck.

Same price on frontier store. So if you think you may want to upgrade to season 2 it will cost you £10 more on Steam. So best buy from the frontier store.

I highly recommend this game I also recommend buying this http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/thrustmaster-t-flight-hotas-x-ps3-20-amazon-2325868

Trust me it's worth it. Then go to the forums and use this https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=178834&highlight=Crab

Took me no time at all to start smuggling into the docks like a pro.

You don't have to invest in a Throttle and joystick, you can use and 360 pad or keyboard with the help from the forum link above.

I give this game 10/10 it delivers exactly what you want out of it.

You want to explore... You can.
You want to trade, smuggle, fight, police or even be a pirate you can.

Also I believe the expansion to the game has 22% on steam.

23 Dec 15 #14
The reviews are seriously disappointing for this; I'm hoping a single-player storyline DLC will be developed, the MMO aspect seems a bit broken... :disappointed:
arithon68 to TesseractOrion
23 Dec 15 2 #24
There will never be a singleplayer storyline - you make your own story. Elite is a sandbox, not a scripted game with a beginning, middle and end. Most of the people writing negative reviews seem to struggle with deciding what to do themselves or have expectations of some other game. Elite is NOT Eve.

I paid £45 for the game and I've had 1,500+ hours for the money, which makes it the best value game I ever bought.

While the Horizons expansion is now available, the core Elite game will continue to expand and additions to Horizons will also be in the main game. Frontier will continue this for the next ten years, with an expansion each year - always optional, each time adding more content to the main game. £30 per year for a game is not that much, compared to say £45 per year for each Fifa or £50 for the next BattleField or COD.

If you want an accurate unbiased (i.e. no axes to grind) review, watch some videos by Scott Manley on YouTube who plays a lot of space games, including Kerbal and Star Citizen (which is definitely worth a look) and he shows off Elite warts and all and gives you an idea what the game is about.

At £10 for the core game, it's definitely worth a punt, but find a game community group experience players can help you and save a lot of frustration early on - also this is a game that is ten times the fun in a group.

Horizons release so far is a huge disappointment.

23 Dec 15 #17
Been on it most of the night, no point sleeping now lol. Managed to figure most things out and completed some volunteer work delivering med supplies. Docking wasn't a problem if taken slowly enough and the game runs great with 3 monitors. Well worth the tenner right now. Fully understand the uproar though over paid for updates, that does suck but hey, we'll be back here in 12 months time buying Horizons for £9.99

Huge fan of the old Elite games and I was eagerly anticipating ED... but I just felt completely let down by this game, there's not much more depth than the old games. I put in about 20 hours before admitting to myself that it was just too damn boring to continue. Not to mention FDs questionable pricing structures. Even at £10 I'm not sure I could recommend it.

I got this in the previous deal. It seems to be a bit of a grind to start with. You don't need a stick and tbh I find docking easy in the small ship you start with. What is hard to start with is making any money in game. This needs some hours put into it before you get anywhere. If you've not got spare time, don't bother. It is very pretty though.

As said this doesn't include the new landings package. But if you've not bought before you'll probably be happy to buy that on discount in a while and stay one release behind.

This is a great game, steep learning curve so admittedly no for everyone but if you like astronomy on top of gaming then you are on to a winner.
faster4233
23 Dec 15 #29
This game consists of 4 billion similar and empty systems. Its fun for a bit but is more shallow than Star Wars Battlefront and alot less fun. Its now populated by hardcore fans who post alot of picks of similar looking planets near similar looking stars. There is also a £40 DLC which allows you to land on the same desolate rock in lots of systems.

Its a lazy game from a half arsed developer. Your money is better spent on Star Citizen which in many ways is already alot better and alot deeper.
mercutio98uk to faster4233
23 Dec 15 #34
What part of what has already been released of Star Citizen is "a lot deeper".
The "fight a few AI waves in a single player, single system" part?
The "walk around in the hangar and look at the polygons and textures of the ship you paid (at least £30 in) real money for" part?
The "walk around a small map and talk to up to 24 people in the social module" part?

And you complain about elite dangerous hardcore fans. Have an enormous eye roll. I'm not even that into it (about... 40 hours total, in 2 bursts of interest over a week or so each time then I got bored and played something else) and there's clearly WAAAAAAYYY more there than the as yet unplayable promises of Chris Roberts.

ED get pretty dull relatively quickly. There's a bit of "fun" to be had grinding for the next ship/rank but it's a bit slim on long term rewards. (For the record Star Citizen is still a bunch of unlinked, half playable tech demo's and millions of $ in promises).
SeraphXii
23 Dec 15 #30
I picked this up, although games like this tend to have a long barrier to entry, so I'm concerned the 2 hour Steam refund window will go long before I even start the bulk of the game.
Levafut
23 Dec 15 #31
I am finding playing ED with my Xbox 360 controller quite enjoyable with some functions left to the keyboard. Docking is quite simple with two thumbsticks, left thumbstick for climb/dive and roll, right thumbstick to rotate and thrust up and down. Bumpers control speed, triggers shoot. D-Pad controls energy distribution. Leave J on the keyboard to enter/leave hyperjump/supercruise. L to deploy/retract landing gear. The learning curve is a little steep, for those that remember it, the original Elite was a lot worse. There is a combat tutorial to get you started.

As some have said, flying between stations transporting cargo or messages can get a little boring. Have a little patience and bolt on some weapon upgrades etc. and you can be a little more daring, going after bounties etc. which is far more interesting.

Brilliant game put 4 hours into last night , it is essential to do the training tutorials and to watch the youtubes it recommends , plus go on the forums and find the manual , it really helps you to understand the terminology and the basics to help get you going !!!! well worth 9.99 !!! might even upgrade if I have not lost interest after say 20 hours !!!

24 Dec 15 #40
Well , Just had my 1st hour on the real game.....Started off with a 400 credit fine I believe for doing something wrong on take off !!! managed to make it to another space station , got through the docking bay doors ( after getting permission to land) put my landing gear down , then got a 30 second warning for landing pad loitering , panicked a bit then crashed and blew up !!!!!! Yikes thank goodness for the big loan !!! I think I am going to need it on this game , But it was great fun , a true sense of nervousness , due to the lack of hand holding on this game ....I like it...sadly though that is the end of my fun until after xmas !!!! other than of course enjoying christmas !!
