Because they are going along the "season" route. Each year you purchase a "season" the game - it has a 10 year plan. If you dont purchase the new season, you are locked out of part of that content. Elite's price will jump back up to its £39.99 price when Horizons is released, as it will replace Season 1 in Steams store.
If anyone has any questions about the game, I should be able to answer (iv'e been involved with the game since the Kickstarter campaign/Alpha). It is awesome by the way:)

It's utterly awesome with the DK2, especially if your graphics card has the balls. You go from flying looking straight ahead to being able to follow the ships you're targetting with your head as you fly.
Docking, flying, fighting... all becomes awesome, especially as you then realise most ships have loads of windows so you get an awesome view. Fuel scooping can make you a bit nervous at first, though.

Been selling all my accumulated trading cards recently as I'd never paid them much attention and never thought they were worth anything, but hey it means I paid a fiver for this, which I'm very happy with.
I had preordered last year but the dropping of offline put me off so I got refunded.

Really good game to play with mates in private group mode. The online mode is almost pointless because of this option though. A bit of a waste really.

I can live with playing an old version of the game over paying full price for the latest one but if any features become disabled then that's a pass from me.

I was a massive fan of Frontier, spent 100s of hours playing, ED is essentially the same game with fancy graphics. Sadly it doesn't cut it as a modern game, it feels like too much of a grind. Graphics are nice and you will get some entertainment just from exploring. Well worth it at £10, I paid £20ish and I felt a bit ripped.

Who is saying to give away content for free? You cannot upgrade but have to pay full price again to get any new features! It's a rip-off that is what it is. £10 Was planned to be the original asking price according to a financial report from Fraudulent Developments but the game was considered by FD to be of such high quality at the end of development they bumped the price up to, what was it, £40 or so.
Over time Braben and Co have sadly proven to be such an untrustworthy bunch. Glad I took my £150 Kickstarter back pledge and walked away from them and this game.
Added heat at this price as this is what the game should have cost in the very first place.

26 Nov 15#49
Of course you can upgrade by later on getting Elite Dangerous Horizons, stop spouting lies. The base game at £9.99 is still a good deal, and great for new players who might not be sure and don't want to commit £39.99 to pre-order Horizons right now. Most likely Horizons will be in a sale next-year as Frontier are pushing Season 3.
I often wait for some games to be in a sale, and skip the latest iteration until it's discounted.
Tic174
26 Nov 15#51
I bought it because from what I understand you get £10 off the next season so if I did decide to upgrade to it it would be the same price as just buying it then I think, plus a ship.
Does any one have any proper tutorials? The "in game" ones are shockingly bad and frustrating, firstly I loaded the launcher up and it gave me the option "single player combat training" which plays different to the actual game (so im not sure why its there), which also has the same "tutorials" and those tutorials tell you to click on a link to watch at times not very helpful youtube videos.
For instance the wolf pack tactics training says "learn wolf pack tactics, attacking from safety etc" but when i load into the mission i just sit there, get attacked by a ship then i destroyed the ship. But didn't learn anything to do with a wingman.
Launch is a good tutorial as it explains which keys do what to fly, but it should be put at the beginning not near the end.
Im stuck on docking. When I load the tutorial it tells me to "request docking permission from the contacts tab on the left." but not how to do this, so I exit the tutorial then click on the video which minimizes the game and runs in a browser, but that guy doesn't explain it either he just says "using the button bound to UI panel focus switch your view to the left hand view" So I switch back to the game and in to the control options menu scroll all the way down to find out its shift, reload the tutorial press shift and it just sort of zooms back abit but doesn't go to the left like in the video. If move the mouse to the left the ship just spins. Can some one help?
Also every time I load the game it prepares the shaders is that normal?
Thanks.

It's not lies! It's not an "UPGRADE", as Horizons contains all of Elite Dangerous. It's like Skyrim: Legendary Edition. It contains all the DLC and the main game. If you have E:D, and want to play Horizons, you have to buy Horizons. There's no DLC upgrade option. You have to buy the base game for a second time.

so much vitriol in this thread.
It really is not rocket science and FD have been upfront about it all since day 1 (aside from offlinegate where they refunded those who wanted it).
ED will be removed from sale on ED:H launch. this is to minimise fragmentation.
Buy ED now ******(from frontiers store - not sure if it will work from steam) ****and get £10 off ED:H when it launches
On top of this you will get a ship skin for all your ships and access to the Cobra IV.
OR
dont buy now and buy horizons for £40 which will include all content from the base game.
if you want ED horizons buying now from FD store is a no brainer as you in effect get to play now and get a few extras free.
if you are unsure if you want Horizons but want a dabble again, its a no brainer, and then enjoy the space part of the game which will not change or be limited on horizons launch, and then maybe upgrade to Horizons in a future offer.
This as I understand it how most MMO games (like WOW eg) work, only in the case of ED you do not have to pay monthly.
Christ, FD have to earn a crust FGS. Ed in the grand scheme of things has held its value quite well imo, how many PC games do you find for well under a 10er within 6 months of launch?. I would say many, if not most.
On top of all that, FD have periodically offered season passes which include the base game and ALL content for the game, past, present and future. That is not available right now..
Word of warning.
1) Horizons may not be coming out on Mac, due to Apple refusing to support oepn GL with the shaders needed.
2) minimum spec for horizons is going up from the base game.... DX11, quad core PC with 64 bit OS
Ridan
26 Nov 15#62
So basically pay £10 for this "deal" and you can then pay £30 to upgrade (£10 discount price) which results in £40 being spent or you can preorder the the horizon expansion for £40 which is the same thing (plus you get the black friday paint jobs).
So i am guessing that the only benefit of this "steam sale" is that if you don't purchase the expansion it is cost efficient. Correct me if i am wrong.
bigmike20vt to Ridan
26 Nov 15#64
note i am not certain on the steam side of things...... but

26 Nov 15#69
Their current business model is only really worth while for people who don't own their game.
They're encouraging people to hold off until the game is pretty much finished - by which time gamers will have moved on. I paid £35 for E:D. I'm not going to spend another £40 just so I can land on a handful of planets.
To a girl from Salford possibly not, to the normal purchasers of high end PC games it is.
sleepymike29
26 Nov 15#71
The download is 1.5mb that downloads the actual demo files which is much bigger. It is representative on the full game as well, you get various training missions on combat, flying, docking etc

I know nothing about how this game works, somebody compared it to WoW in terms of the extra features, but is it like WoW also in that people with the Horizons chapter will be more powerful than those without. e.g. you can be level 85 in Wow but the new addon allows you to goto lvl 90? Or is Horizons purely content?
sleepymike29 to Franken
26 Nov 15#75
This game is nothing like WoW.
bigmike20vt to Franken
26 Nov 151#77
no... or should I say god I hope not!
so there are no levels in ED, your skills are your skills, and, other than the cobra IV which is a mid range jack of all trades tier ship, you will have access to all ships in the game.
ultimately you will not be able to go down to planets, that is it...... There WILL be some unique items you wont be able to mine etc which you can use for crafting etc, however from what i can tell these items will be use once items, for increasing jump range for explorers etc, and are very rare items you wont be using willy nilly and you will not be crafting the "awesome laser of destruction". Of course we will not know for certain till launch.
BUT (big big big BUT!)
one of the largest complaints of ED (other than those about features in the DDF not implemented, but that is for another thread), is about the PvP in ED, or lack of there in.
ED is primarily a PvE game. if you want PvP it is possible, but bear in mind any player who does not want to fight you can run away and switch to solo or private group to "escape" you. I love ED (self confessed fanboy) but if you are expecting star conclict type pvp it is not going to happen (there is a pure pvp arena mode called CQC but this is not really the meat of the game). As such many PvP players complain that the game game is not balanced well, and they are not technically wrong, its just that it is not really trying to be either imo
so some reading around about ED may be needed, I adore the game, but it is not for everyone and many people have bought it expecting something it is not. Arguably the launch trailer did not help this.

is your landing gear deployed? (default key may be L i think)
are you facing the right way, you want the big dock number in front of you and the blast shield (the metal sheet with the triangle on) behind you.
once lined up correctly and the "docking hologram" that replaces your 3D scanner all looks good, gently tap the vertical down thrusters, when you are a m or so from the deck, it should auto pull your ship down.
last night i spent a few hrs in a wing with a friend talking him through the basics of the game, and i shadowed him... if you can find someone to do similar, you will find it useful i think. the tutorials in the demo help, but certainly do not cover everything. its a steep initial learning curve but after 5 hrs or so it will be instinct

I can live with playing an old version of the game over paying full price for the latest one but if any features become disabled then that's a pass from me.
Docking, flying, fighting... all becomes awesome, especially as you then realise most ships have loads of windows so you get an awesome view. Fuel scooping can make you a bit nervous at first, though.
Over time Braben and Co have sadly proven to be such an untrustworthy bunch. Glad I took my £150 Kickstarter back pledge and walked away from them and this game.
Added heat at this price as this is what the game should have cost in the very first place.
I often wait for some games to be in a sale, and skip the latest iteration until it's discounted.
Thanks.
Bought as I am not sure about this game and if I get 10 hours its cheaper than buying 2 Mag's
For anyone looking to buy the Thrust-master. I got one last year and for the money its a decent joystick. force feedback is fine and works well with FS
Another unrelated question, but does anyone know what time we can see Amazon's Lightning deals tomorrow? Is it midnight?
I think I remember games that cost £10 back in the 1980 - they were on tape and were mostly rubbish... I think you need to adjust your expectations. Oh I get it, maybe you have a nut allergy?
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz

Cheers.

I'm not going to say it runs flawlessly, but it does work. The main problems performance wise are jumping between systems and combat involving more than about 10 ships.
So i am guessing that the only benefit of this "steam sale" is that if you don't purchase the expansion it is cost efficient. Correct me if i am wrong.
if you do not own ED & were going to buy horizons on launch anyway for full price the advantages to buying ED in this offer now and then using your £10 discount and pre-ordering horizons (rather than waiting )are :-
ship skins
cobra IV
getting to play today
Might then be interested @ a £25 price point.
I'm glad I withdrew my £20 early bird backer; I suspected this might turn into a milking parlor.

They're encouraging people to hold off until the game is pretty much finished - by which time gamers will have moved on. I paid £35 for E:D. I'm not going to spend another £40 just so I can land on a handful of planets.

so there are no levels in ED, your skills are your skills, and, other than the cobra IV which is a mid range jack of all trades tier ship, you will have access to all ships in the game.
ultimately you will not be able to go down to planets, that is it......
Will give it another go when I have more patience :stuck_out_tongue:
are you facing the right way, you want the big dock number in front of you and the blast shield (the metal sheet with the triangle on) behind you.
once lined up correctly and the "docking hologram" that replaces your 3D scanner all looks good, gently tap the vertical down thrusters, when you are a m or so from the deck, it should auto pull your ship down.
last night i spent a few hrs in a wing with a friend talking him through the basics of the game, and i shadowed him... if you can find someone to do similar, you will find it useful i think. the tutorials in the demo help, but certainly do not cover everything. its a steep initial learning curve but after 5 hrs or so it will be instinct
Hopefully Amazon will repeat it, i recall them doing something like that last year I think. Or do I go with the aforementioned speedlink?
Edit: just went onto the page and it seems they have it on lightning deals for 29.22 for the next few hours. Decisions decisions!

Tentative small steps at the moment, practising the tutorials at current. Lot of fun, just hope it retains its interest longer than a few days!
Excellent spot though, voted hot!
