For folk who have never owned their own rods..
Look for solid brass on the connectors, this makes them pricier but far more reliable than a simple cheapo "cast" (the bit that has failed me each time, ...BEFORE I purchased my Bailey Blue rods, which flex like a tie fighter manouveres
& if they are for chimney's too then look at what sort of head brush construction you need depending on the diameter of a chimney / flue & the material it is constructed from, ..as some brushes & rods are potential liner wreckers!

QD used to sell these around £15, but another store stocks them also around £12, off hand I cannot remember where I bought them, might have been homebargains or b&m.
If you lift the manhole cover and rod the drain straight line part until you hit resistance I have never snapped one and they don't come apart if you have done them up in the first place.
One of dinorod type companies charged £95 call out and simple drain clearance.
I recommend every house shoild buy a set for emergencies. If it does not work, then you can call out a drain cleaning company.
After clearing the blockage remember to fill up the bath , then empty , and it will flush your system.

Zinc Alloy = cheap **** ...AVOID ...invest in super flexi bailey blues if you need a set just buy a decent set with a solid reputation for coming back intact.
cheap sets have you sweating as to a secondary blockage, ..the rods.

I agree. You don't want to make the problem worse. I tend to use a length of MDPE water pipe with a rounded off piece of wood jammed in the end. At least there is no chance of it becoming your next blockage.

These cheap ones snap very easily, which can cause major problems.

I would recommend Bailey Lockfast Drain Rod Set for circa £50 for anyone who doesnt know what they are doing.
I know its more money but it will not come apart in the drain which would cause you major problems & money.

Actually, I think I paid about £20+ for mine from wickes. Much cheaper than calling out dynarod or the likes, but more expensive than the £6 deal for 1 year of Homeserve plumbing cover.

Joking aside, it's really useful having a set of these. Saves a fortune when you need to unblock a drain (if you can remember where you put them...)
Follow the simple instructions when using them, or you blockage may get much worse!
I once had to hold onto my set for dear life when a deeply backed up blockage suddenly gave way, and I live on a steep hill, and it sounded like a freight train when it suddenly cleared and flowed!

That would be a great present for Jim out of the Royle family.

If you have a 'post Xmas blockage' then your local chemist might have a less painful remedy than using drain rods
