This camera is nothing to do with a router, looks like a typical CCTV camera which would most likely mean a BNC cable to some kind of DVR system.

got a couple of free standing versions off ebay. not bad, no real lag from wifi to wifi, but from wifi to 3G / 4G phone app it's very laggy

Depends on your recording equipment too. If that's just D1, which a lot of low/mid range CCTV recorders are, then it probably won't make much of a difference. A lot of this is just marketing.

Obviously there are other factors like lens type and possible improved night vision over the older cameras.

This hooks up to an existing DVR/CCTV recording system. It's old tech, analogue, wired and not an 'IP' camera. It's basically a bog standard CCTV camera. If you have an IP camera (I'm assuming that's what you mean when you typed 'up camera') then this isn't the same thing.

Always wondered why these are described as "vandleproof housing"? Surely it's as easy for someone to throw a rock at it/hit it with a pole/or blind it with spray paint as a non-vandleproof camera?
