I drive on the motorway for work and can vouch for Google maps.

Just to add, you get to select which map from the Euro Region you want to download - that one is included in the £9.99. Any other and you have to pay extra

Brilliant Sat Nav, been using it for a couple of years now. More accurate than Tom Tom due to the regular (free) map updates. Hot!

Sorry to go off topic but is google maps better than Waze?

I personally vouch for Google maps not so much because am too stuck up android. But because whenever I have used Google maps be it in Europe or UK. It's always accurate and that's the reason why I always need data even abroad to get the best of it. Especially the ability to choose faster routes due to changes in traffic conditions is absolutely fabulous.

Please do yourself a favour and do not buy it! Had it for few years, but disappointed me so much recently that I uninstalled it despite few months live traffic subscription I had left (useless anyway).

Steve, Waze was bought out by Google.

the thing with google maps, for offline mode, you need to download the relevant map... it stays there for 30 days and then expires... you then have to reload it if you to use a route that involves that map

Another long time Copilot user. It's an excellent sat nav. Has lots of useful features that Google doesn't - speed cam warnings, speed limits etc. Properly offline so always works regardless of mobile network. Traffics about a tenner per year after the first year. The full Europe maps version is also on sale on Google Play btw for £25 which is a bargain.

I tried copilot, however I much preferred waze and here to that. however everyone has thier preferences.. you should see what you prefer..most of the best software is free

I use sygic for speed cameras as its really decent.. almost as good as pocketgps ..
but sygic will overlay and plays very nicely Google maps... best of both worlds..
although pocketgps.. I think thier one is cameraware or something like that...
it will keep you on the ball with average speed zone cameras, whereas sygic will only note each camera location with its speed, which is useless for average speeds..

Worth the money to have speed camera warnings compared to Google which does not. Prefer the new updated Tom Tom though overall

I love Copilot, though to be fair the only other sat-nav I've tried is google maps. Haven't really felt the need to try others as Copilot is so good.

The HERE app is at least just as good. Download maps, use offline. Here maps have been bought by vw/audi, Daimler and BMW... If it's good enough for them.. For free, excellent value...

I would sooner get waze for free to be honest? I really rate waze, although not sure if copilot would be better for abroad (I assume it doesn't use data)

I am using it for last five years and it is the best I had. So many options to play with. Cloud storage for your addresses, speed camera warnings which is very helpful, offline maps, regular updates of maps and cameras database . Free ones are okay too but I only use this for my travels.

Nonsense, my Tomtom 5100 gets its proper GPS position within 5 seconds, and traffic information within 15 sec. No smartphone is as sensitive as a modern dedicated Sat Nav.

not sure what is quicker but if you consider the fact that mobiles use data, GPS and WiFi to get position they should be quicker, but at the same time Sat Nav devices have a bigger antenna to pick up GPS signals, TomTom even have quickfix that stores satellite positions for a quicker fix.

Paying for Phone sat nav seems kind of archaic now with current decent free options (I used to be a big co-pilot user years ago). Google maps/Waze is pretty decent if you have a good signal and something like Here maps is handy for travelling (as you can download maps offline, including public transport times) and it has traffic and speed warnings.
tomtomato
29 Nov 15#41
Maybe on older models, but there is no denying that recent models have a bigger antenna and better GPS reception than a smartphone, particularly when used behind a windscreen, on a cloudy day.

you have really excellent alternative both offline and online for maps, and agps helps you get a fast GPS fix when using a mobile. also speed camera software works with most mapping apps. I find paying for speed cameras useful as its not always clear what the speed limit is on a road. I never speed but its useful to know the speed so that I can ensure I am behaving!
the speed limit on a road can vary so you cannot always assume you know what the limit is just by the type of road it is.
